I need a new monitor and there is a sale going on at NCIX which is just down the road from me. This BenQ V2410 is on sale for 150 right now, but I don't know if its any good. There is also this LG E2341T. I am looking to spend $200 or less, so is there anything you would recommend?

LG IPS231P

Theres nothing wrong with either monitor you listed.... Just there's absolutely nothing noteworthy of either. The LG is list in an IPS panel which has significantly better color rendering and much better viewing angles compared to TN panels (which comprise of 95% of most LCD's).

So both the monitors I listed are TN panels?

Is it a good monitor? Not really. It's as cheap as it gets. If I were to get a TN panel for gaming, I would get one with a maximum response time of 2ms.

The IPS panel linked is also low-end. Colors will be slightly better, viewing angle will be better, but motion performance will be worse. It all depends on what you're looking for.

If you have to ask, then yes they are TN panels. Any IPS-based LCD will plaster "IPS!!!!!" everywhere it can because its a pretty distinguishing feature.

6-bit IPS panels are very different from 8-bit, 10-bit and 12-bit IPS panels. 6-bit IPS panels uses A-FRC technology to simulate 8-bit, which will give it better color gramut. On the other hand, this will cause something like this: "[a]dot crawl and what appears to be horizontally-interleaved pixel interlacing", which could be annoying. Other problems include "strobing pattern[s] for certain fast-moving objects (including my mouse pointer!)".

Ok? That's kind of a weird "response"

IPS panels are still better for color irrespective of color bit depth compared to TN. Your first incrediably odd claim seems rather anecdotal and might be an issue relating to the type of connection (VGA, DVI, HDMI, etc) rather than the panel itself.

In general, ghosting is a non-issue from any modern LCD regardless of the panel type (including slower VA panels) due to pretty aggressive Response Time Compensation. People complaining about ghosting is actually a pretty rare occurance these days.

What exactly is weird about my response?

6-bit with A-FRC in IPS panels is far from ideal. Heavy dithering has to be done to simulate 8-bit. Motion performance is said to be much better on TN panels. These issues have been seen by lots of reviewers.

2ms and 5ms is the maximum response time. The response rate isn't constant and can go up to 250ms for both types of panels.

I won't say that IPS panels are bad for gaming, but some people just can't play fast-paced games on an IPS panel. Everyone has a different opinion on the subject. Some people are more suceptible to certain issues than others. Some monitors might even cause headaches to some people. I would recommend testing both monitors and see for yourself.

That you just quoted some random other person's personal experience (from some random forum) without context as a counter-point. That's.... just weird.

6-bit panels IPS will still provide better color performance than TN panels. Your statement doesn't change this.

I don't even know what to make of your response time claim. OK? That's incrediably vague and about as helpful as "Cars can go from 0 MPH to 200 MPH". Ghosting, for the most part, is a non-issue in any modern LCD largely due to aggressive RTC.... which i've already said.

Yeah, its possible that he may not be happy with his monitor, or maybe hes extraordinarily sensitive to refresh rates or something. He can return the monitor if he wants to.

XaosII

What kind of context did you expect? Again, I took an explanation from someone else, but I made it clear that he wasn't the only one having this issue. This particular monitor doesn't even have a VGA output. If that person used some kind of adapter, then I would think that the answer would be clear to all of us that the adapter was the problem, which clearly isn't the case.

6-bit panels IPS will still provide better color performance than TN panels. Your statement doesn't change this.

XaosII

That's what I said. What made you think otherwise?

XaosII

It is helpful. Some people think that a 2ms monitor displays constantly in 2ms. If a 5ms monitor had a 5ms refresh rate at all times, then there would be no difference at all between a 2ms and a 5ms. It's a lot more helpful than your irrelevant statement. I'm not claiming to know everything about those monitors, but saying that 6-bit e-IPS panels are as good as TN panels for fast-paces action is simply not true. Just because you can't see a big difference doesn't mean that the difference isn't there.

so what games are you pro at? personally i think 2ms/5ms makes little to no difference.
