My brother, sister, and I (we're triplets) just go a new PC for a b-day, and I was wondering how good it is...

The Specs:

Quad-core processer

8500 gt graphics card

3 gigs of RAM

Thanks!

A decent one.

First, specify what quadocore processor is (model)

The video crad is crap, well not actually, that's my video card  If you are on budget get the 9600GT, and if you can afford more get the 8800gt, which is the best bang for the buck.

The speed of the RAM would be ideal to know, 3 gigs of RAM aren't of many use right now, if you do nothing other than gaming and simple applications .

But it seems to me that, that computer is prebuilt one. If it is, I urge you to build your computer by yourself, not build it actually, just choose the parts and get someone to assemble it for you.

Deffinately a graphics card if you are going to be doing any gaming. A good graphics card if you are on a budget is Nvidia's 8600 GT or GTS. If you have a microcenter near you they are running a promotion on them till the end of this month in-store I believe. Here is a link to it at newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130084

CPU is good id say (im guessing its a q6600...great chip).

graphics card is pretty crap though. if ure ever thinking of upgrading it in the future then that shoudl be the first component to be swapped out. at the mo the sweet spot in terms of price/performance is the 8800GT.

3gigs of ram is nice. its not really needed now but itll save an upgrade later on. it certainly wont hurt anyway :D.

Actually, I'd have to say that instead of the 9600GT, go for an 8800GTS 320. Right now, they're comparable in price, but the 8800GTS will have better performance.

Someone comes in asking if the PC they bought is "good"...... and everyone immediately suggests expensive upgrade solutions, most of which would probably require a new PSU considering it's a prebuilt......

That computer is pretty good. The 8500GT graphics card is a weak component, but the system itself is powerful. It will let you experience any PC game on the market.

Actually, we all stated that it's a decent system...it's just the video card is the weak link. After that, it's just been us suggesting a possible upgrade path that is both budget minded and the most effective for that system. So don't get all huffy on us.

Budget Card that'll still plow through that 8500GT:

I know because i have a card similar to that one, good choice if you can't upgrade your PSU and get a HD 3850/70 or 8800GS/GT.

there is no way an 8800gts 320 performs better than a 96gt

Please revert hardware questions to the hardware forum in the future. It just keeps things organized.
