Well, the time has arrived, my AGP x8 computer can't run anything anymore.

I'd appreciate your advice on whether now is a good time to buy a new machine, in the price range of 700-800$, or should I wait for DX11 or some other new piece of hardware\software that will come out in a month and will make my newly purchased computer obsolete in 2 years? I'm hoping it could last me for about 5 years, and no I don't care about graphics at all I just want to make the minimum requirements for games that will come out in a few years' time.

I actually have to decide by tomorrow, so any quick advice would be greatly appreciated ;).

To be honest no it isn't the best time.. Wait till the DX11 cards come out and then buy when cards will be cheaper. You could make a very solid long lasting rig with $800. I say wait and build it yourself.

^ This. Once the 5870 is released, prices will drop slowly.

Yes, now is a great time with great prices. Buy yourself a great motherboard and you can always upgrade a piece of two in the near-future.

First build is 827.92 total, but has a monitor incase you want to switch from CRT.

Second build is 797.93 total. The video card is about 10%~ faster. If you want to save money, get a Phenom II X3 720 and 4870 1GB instead. That should take off $100+ and will only cause a marginal performance decrease. If it's your parent's money then go for the 800 lol.

I'd wait for DX 11 cards. At the very least, wait for Windows 7. Yeah, most places are offering free upgrades to Windows 7 with a desktop purchase, but October isn't far away, and why start installing stuff only to wipe the hard drive to install Win 7? Wait a month or two.
