Is this a significant jump?

Ok firstly, don't tell me to upgrade because this my own personal PC for college and work, will get an i7 system later.

Here's the thing. I have an e8400 and I don't plan to overclock it. I have a GT440, and while some games run fine on high, Battlefield 3's framerate is still erratic on high. I'm planning to get a cheap Asus 6850 to replace it, and here's the question. Should I? Is it significant enough to at least get stable (I mean 40 to 60 fps) framerates on high on Bf3? (not Ultra) Online matches too, if you have an input on that.

a 6850 should see 40ish on high with no AA, also it depends on the amount of players on screen There's alot of variables with BF3, one minute there's nothing, next minute you're looking at 20 guys running across the screen Saying that, a 6870 can be picked up for a little more, and they are great

That cpu you have is still pretty good, however battlefield 3 is one of those game that can make use of four cores (but most games don't). Still the videocard is holding you back the most, so the first thing you need to upgrade is that videocard. You will achieve high settings with a hd 6850 allthough i would really recommend the hd 6870, it's not that much more expensive than the hd 6850 and it's significantly faster.

I'll second this, the 6870 is the better card and it will run all games on high, hell, even more than that! And the price is not too high compared to the 6850!

Okay, but will there be a lot of bottleneck with the 6870? The e8400 isn't exactly top of the line, I have a mere 4GB of RAM by the way.

I have a gtx460 1gb (equal to the 6850) I recommend either very highly, it plays bf3 on all high @1080p no sweat.

No it won't bottleneck it, the e8400 is not as bad as you think and 4 gb is more than enough. Actually the e8400 is still a high end cpu among dual cores. look here are (gaming) cpu's compared to each other. The gaming cpu hierarchy chart http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-5.html There may be a lot of cpu's better, but at this moment for games the cpu power available is way too high for what we need (read games don't support all that cpu power)

The E8400 is about the best processor in the 8xxx series (overclocks very nicely and easily, should you want to go down that path). A 6850 would be nice, but a 6870 would even be much more nice for just a little more money.

What about online?

I should have mentioned I was referring to online, but yes online is very smooth. I don't know how the 6850 and 6870 overclock, but I know the 460 is a beast at overclocking. Any of the 3 choices would be fine.

Don't worry about the CPU, it won't bottleneck your new GPU. A 6870 would be a great upgrade.
