is this good enough to future proof me for a few years?

yesterday i purchased a new computer and just want to know how set i am for the future, ?

motherboard - asus m4A89gtd-pro

Harddrive - western digital caviar black 500gb/7200rpm/sata

ram - g skill 4 gb (2*2gb) pc3 - 10666 (ddr3-1333) NQ 9-9-9-24

PSU - Artec earthwatts 750w ATX. 80 plus certified

processor - AMD phenom II X6 Six core 1090T black edition cpu

case -antec 900

dvd - lite on standard dvd writer

graphics card - hd5850

now my question is, how future proof is this machine, and should i buy another hd5850 to crossfire now or wait and if wait when would be the best time to do so??

Fine, that CPU is unnecessary right now and the HDD is a bit small but the build is solid. The 5850's are being replaced by the 68's but since most games are console ports that won't be a problem either. Consider a new heatsink on that CPU, as the stock one is probably very loud.

There's no such thing as future proofing. Even my rig will probably only last a little bit longer than a rig with an AMD X4 and 5850. Typically what forces upgrades in hardware are additional features, not just an escalating amount of processing power. So for GPUs it would be things like a new shader model or DirectX version getting released and for CPUs it would be things like the industry transitioning to CPUs with more cores (1 core > 2 cores > 4 cores and so on). And since a CPU upgrade usually means getting a CPU with a different socket type than your old one that means replacing your mobo as well, which also means that your RAM will probably also need to be replaced.

So really the only things you can future proof in a rig are media drives, HDDs, cases, and PSUs. Unfortunately, all of those things are also the cheapest components in a rig.

It is being replaced but you should have no trouble crossfiring it - buy another one before Christmas.

The 5800 series is NOT being replaced by the 6800 series. The 6800 series are replacing the 5700 series, where as the the 6900 series will replace the 5800 series.

Get a larger hard drive and you'll be good for a while
