it's not great, but the 8400m gs is dxd 10 and can handle new games on med-high. Stressfull ones like oblivion might be medium. I know my 8600m gt can handle oblvion and half life 2 and fear on max. try these forums there much less biased.

Basically you should never expect to play 'today's games' on a laptop. Unless you're ready to blow the extra 3 grand on an true gaming laptop, you really can only play games ~2 years old very well. You can deffinately play some of the great older games (>2 years) though with specs like that.
Problem with that laptop is the harddrive, cpu and video card. That's a good laptop for the average user but very slow for gaming.
You might get away with playing 3 year old games. For a gaming grade laptop you will want a faster cpu (a lot of games don't use the 2nd core so basically the cpu becomes a bottlekneck in games), the video card is the low end average user card. If you can get the 8600 go you'll be much better off. Not going to be an amazing card but will play the games fairly well. The hard drive will slow you down as well since it is only a 5400 rpm drive meaning likely less cache and slower read times which will hurt performance.
Good for regular day avg use not good for gaming. Depending on your budget may i suggest something along the lines of a Dell XPS laptop. i have one and it's great for games. There are also some other good laptop makers.
But rule of thumb is don't get a laptop from a bestbuy or the like expecting to play games. They're good for general use but very slow for games.
