[QUOTE="Nerd_Rage"]Geek Squad at Best Buy told me that if my mb can support 4GB RAM, it will only recognize 3.3 GB...WTF? Is that true?GTR12
It can be true, but that depends on the memory controller and if the OS is a 32bit or 64bit.
Oh yea, now I remember he said that is true for 32 bit. That blows tho.Geek Squad at Best Buy told me that if my mb can support 4GB RAM, it will only recognize 3.3 GB...WTF? Is that true?Nerd_RageIt's not weather or not you have room for it, but what OS your running (32 or 64 bit). 32 bit can only 'see' and use around 3.3GB, while running a 64 bit OS would allow you to fill your board with RAM to your heart's content.

Gosh... ...when will people learn. :? I am so sick of this "32bit will only see 3,xx" because that is a load of crap and is truly a false fact! Real awnser: X86/32bit OS, have the memory adresses filled to a maximum of 4GB, the OS itself will NEVER se anything less, it is capable to use WHOLE 4GB! If the Motherboard need to adress a Graphiccards memory that amount would need to be calculated with, but it's not a constant, If your running a X86 OS with 4GB ram and a Graphiccard with 2GB Vmemory you WILL see alot less than 3,3GB. Please, please theres nothing that state 3,3GB or even around that amount of ram, to know how much ram a X86/32Bit on a specific PC will see you need to know the exsact hardware it use, anything else is just nonsence! Could it be a sticky on this board?, because the wrong awnser is poping up 4times a week!
yes, that should be considered when upgrading. however you should also consider this neat trick to use unused ram as a sort of virtual disk which you could use for your page file for example. read here:

So basically what your saying is that, theoretically if the only RAM you had on a machine with an x86/32bit OS was 4GB of SDRAM, and no other VRAM or anything like that, and could somehow still boot, you could use all 4GB. of SDRAM that you have installed? So really 3.3GB is nonsense, because the amount of usable RAM is ever changing from my understanding.

Yeah for swehunt! I always end up banging my head on the desk when I see people post that a 32bit OS only supports 3.xx GB of memory. I grew tired of correcting people a long while back since no one seems to listen anyways.

Maybe we should try and get a stickied post about this topic, so that mere mortals like myself don't screw that one up anymore. :P

I don't think I'm going to explain this part very well, but I'll try:
There are a few things in your PC that will steal a little bit of your RAM (even without a dedicated GPU), so you can never truly have a 32bit OS making use of the full 4GB of RAM you have installed.....
That doesn't sound very good....I hate when I can't explain things well, even though I know in my mind what I'm thinking about: Here's a short, but not quite right answer to your understanding - Yes, theoretically you could see all 4GB of RAM being used (or at least something very close to 4GB).

To extend neatfeatgye's post. :)
Yes, many things in a PC need adressed memory to function correctly.
But the true amount the PC working with is never less than 4 actual GB, but that will need to be divided to ram/GPU/CPU/HDD memory and specific adresses that the MB need to be free for functioning, this isn't the same as 4GB ram, theres a diffrence.
It's not a particular easy task to write a "sticky" and it would need some serious thinking to get it understandable for most people, with my bad grammar (Eng isn't my native) im not the best candidate really, but the 3,xxGB is all wrong and i get a little more mad each time it arise with some wrong awnsers every time.
The simplest awnser is that your PC wont make use of the whole 4GB Ram rather than a specific amount.
(The PC will use 4GB but not 4GB ram, the amount of ram you'll end up with using is depending on the hardware you got.)
if your using windows 7 32bit, only 3.29gb is being utilized by your pc.venjhammetdid you even read anything in this thread?
RAM is a myth spread by the Catholic church, it dosn't really exist.
markop2003
Ram would actually be a myth spread by Jewish faith, lol, Their faith resides during the age of Aries(the ram) 2000BCE-1AD, which is why they blow the Rams horn lol. (I mean if we are poking fun lol)

When I hit properties, it shows 4GB.
if your using windows 7 32bit, only 3.29gb is being utilized by your pc.venjhammetYou should read previous posts before posting, to keep yourself from making dumb mistakes that others already have made. We just had an entire discussion on how no matter what: 1.The amount of usable RAM will be constantly changing, and there is no set amount. 2.The amount of usable RAM on an x86/32-bit OS is system specific, meaning that no two systems RAM usage is truly identical, so making a generalized statement like I previously did is useless info to the poster.
maybe you had too much RAM on your brain and got fried...venjhammetIs this your attempt at flaming? All I'm asking is for you to not pour salt on an open wound and repeat what half this thread was discussing; about what not to say about RAM.
I can post what I want so get out of my way. You think you're better? Go read the funny papers.venjhammetyour inaccurate posts following a lengthy and detailed debate which had already covered everything are obviously always welcome
