Is Vista exclusive Games an illegal business venture?

basically how the %^$# can that be a legal thing to do 1. USA and Monopolys arent they illegal 2. If they are forcing users to own Vista to play a game I think that is a forced Monopoly. 3. I dont want Vista according to many reviewers there is a negative effect on us DX9 players. I dont want to dish out $199+ for Vista another $300+ for a 8800 that supports DX10 when my 7950 PCIx16 can run many games quite well

It is no more illegal than any console-exclusive game. PS3 owners probably don't like not being able to play Halo 3, Xbox 360 owners probably don't like not being able to play Metal Gear Solid 4, and Windows XP users probably don't like not being able to play Shadowrun, Alan Wake (when it comes out), and Halo 2 (yeah, right).

Oh god is it illegal that they force you to play Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3 or Halo 3 on Xbox 360? No.

I don't know.....to me, it doesn't seem as simple as people make it. isMicrosoft in violation of anti-trust law? is it abusing its monopoly? I'm not a law student so i don't know about the particulars -- but it definitely isn't as simple as limiting a console game to its platfrom.

Are games only for XBOX360 illegal?

Are movies that only run on BlueRay players illegal?

Is unleaded gas only cars illegal?

Please...

Not even close to being illegal. It's called freedom of choice. If you WANT to play a certain game then you will buy whichever pc/console/handheld that will allow you to play it.

Should I try to sue Epic because my Atari 2600 wouldn't play Gears of War??

I hope you weren't trying to make a point that MS should make Vista games for XP too... it's still M$...

Edit: And if you pay more than $100 American for a legal copy of Vista then you really need to get informed.

No, but it should be illegal! I mean when someone makes a program, they shouldn't just make it for Vista! They should make it for XP, OSX, Linux, 98, PalmOS, PSP, Cell Phones, OpenBSD, Game Gear, Atari 2600, digital watches...

Buddy, the whole point to playing games is to have fun and if MS is adding a sickly taste to your gaming due to their business pracitises then it time to move on to something that you actually enjoy. There are alot of other companies out there that provide good gaming without a business startegy that makes Wal-Mart look like a charity organization. It's your money, spend what you've earned on the people that YOU feel have earned it.

It is absolutely not illegal. It is up to the game companies what systems they want to make their games for. If they want their game to run on Vista only, that's their prerogative.

That said, if MS is somehow strong-arming the devs, using their monopoly (and let us not forget, MS WAS found to be a monopoly by the courts, that's not up for debate) to force the development of Vista only games, that would probably be illegal.

As far as developers making games universal for all systems, that will never happen. Have you ever heard of a couple little things such asexclusive rights, competition and PROFIT?!

No, they are not forcing you to upgrade to Vista, they are trying to convince you to upgrade to Vista by making games exclusive to Vista

Of course it's not illegal, but it's a stupid practice on Microsoft's part and it seems they are giving up on it. Viva Pinata which is an internally developed game by Rare is being released for both Vista and XP and Microsoft is bringing Live to XP as well. Naturally, there'll be more and more Vista-exclusive games as time goes by, but as Vista's performance improves and it gets a much-needed Service Pack - we'll all be gaming on it.

Because obviously before Vista there was a thriving gaming community on non-Windows computers... oh wait. I lied.

Microsoft just got a500 million$ fine from the EU for taking advantage of there monopoly.

But if people think MS is so bad then stop using there products. What exactly is it you cant do with linux/openGL that you can with windows/DirectX.

Yeah yeah i know DX is alot more then just graphics etc. but still. If more and more people went over to linux the games would follow.

When they pay a developer like Remedy to make their game that would otherwise work on XP a Vista exclusive, it does stink a bit. But since XP and Vista are both Microsoft's they couldn't really be accused of using their monopoly position against one of their own product anyway I think.

No it isn't. They just have to say that older OSs are no longer supported with certain game development to fully utilize what is available.

What it comes down to is you are afraid of Vista, don't want to upgrade, and want something else to blame for it.

There were only two games that ever came out that you have to buy Vista to play them. Shadowrun and Halo 2 both flopped and got bad reviews from alot of people in the media.
