is Vista really worth the Direct3D10 games that will come out?

Vista's price and it's system requirements are pretty high.  I use a 550watt PSU to run my Core 2 Duo machine and I have heard that the new Direct3D10 videocards require a whopping 550watt for just themselves.  That would mean that I would need about kilowatt PSU to run Direct3D10 games.

Vista also seems to make systems run slower on the same hardware compared to XP.

my question is Vista really worth the money and hardware upgrades for the Direct3D10 games?  It seems to me that there aren't very many Direct3D10 games even being talked about other than Crysis and Halo2.  And why in the world would someone upgrade their PC and spend all their money right now to play Halo2.. a game that was released for the normal Xbox 2 years ago.  You can't even play cross-platform with it.

first of all, depending on the quality of your PSU, you are probably fine with all the new stuff. LOL the cards themselves don't use anywhere NEAR 550 watts! you could probably squeak by with a 450 watt for the 8800, and i'm sure the 8600 series will use a little less. Anyway, yes the OS is worth the games....

And Halo2 isn't even dx10. So I would say that untill there are 5 or more good games out that use dx10 it ain't worth it. Of course if you already own a dx10 card then you might as well put it to use.

All upcoming game will be Dx9/DX10 for quite some time. I wont be upgrading anytime soon and that is the same for the majority of people. Only a small percentage buy a new OS soon after it's release. Most people let them iron out the bugs. Since you need Vista and a DX10 card, that involved spending more money. A lot of people don't have lots of money to just throw around when a new OS and video cards come out. Not to mention Crysis being the only big name game utilizing the technology. It's pointless to worry about Vista or DX10 right now. Give it another 6 months or so and see what comes out. You don't want to rush into anything just now. Why buy a new video card when they have been releasing new ones every week or two which are FAR better than the previous one. No DX10 games are out, so don't waste money on a top card when you can get it cheaper when the games are out.

I wasn't planning on "upgrading" for at least 6-8 months anyway but even then I am wondering if there will be enough quality games for the system to bother with the ridiculous price of the new videocards. Also what do you mean that these new video cards do not require a 550watt PSU.. as my nvidia 7800GT 256MB PCI Expresss x16requires a 350watt to run.

Hogwash, a good 550w PSU will run one 8800gtx, and I know people running SLI G80 cards with just a 600w PSU, check the nvnews forums.

Even if you get vista and dont a a DX10 card u can still run the dx10 games in dx9 and they still look pretty. Thats what im doing untill dx10 is mandatory in 1-2 years

DX10 needs DX10 video cards - which are not out yet. Id wait a year or two before you upgrade. Otherwise, youll be spending like 500-800 for a friggn video card. (not to mention 100-250 for vista).

Not to get off topic but do you need to play halo 2 with a dx10 card? Like it wont run on a dx9 card? which is like umm a pentium 3 celeron, and a geforce 3?

It requires Vista, im not sure about a DX10 card, they could have written it to work with DX9L, which would basically make it a DX9 game that only works with Vista. To require both Vista and a DX10 card I think would be pretty foolish...

I dont care about graphics in my games. As long as the game play is good, its fun, decent stoy etc. High quality graphics are nice, but not necesary IMO. So i couldent realy care less about DX10...:)

Knowing that Vista will be obsolete by mid-2008, ....................................PRICELESS!

Edit: The CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 is a Dual Channel Kit, I would want/need 4GB therefore the x2 reference.

yeah the price of upgrades for Vista is ridiculous. and the clause that says Vista cannot be run in a virtual machine.. extremely restrictive and should be illegal. By the way though the original Xbox is pretty cheap these days.. or at least it was until Microsoft raised the price to coherse people to just get the X360 because it is a better deal. you know Microsofts product's are pretty good and all (I haven't had many problems with XP Pro at all) but their way of getting people to adopt their new stuff is just plain saying we don't care about the customer.

Are you on some meds or something? :P No one should be $900+ for a quad-core CPU right now, nor $800 on RAM, that's just silly.
