Now that Windows 7 ships with both versions, I can't decide which to install!

I'm worried that games won't work with 64 bit, and I'm not sure if there is any performance benefit if I do try! Although, I guess all of my 4 gig of RAM will be used, I would rather not have a lot of headaches for the sake of a tiny % increase if there are still issues with 64 bit.

Anyone got any experiences?

Thanks

All my games that worked on vista work on Windows7 64bit, so don't worry!

If you want extremely old games, not really, but if you play games new games or relatively old games, you will have no problems.

Works fine with new games for me. Haven't tried playing Fallout and that though, so not sure about older games.

It works just fine. About the only games that won't work are 16 bit games. They have to be at least 32 bit to run on a 64 bit OS, but you might be able to get around that with DOS Box.

No I wouldn't worry about that because a lot of gamers use it and they play hard core games and it runs just fine.

Only games I can't play are Gothic I and Gothic II. Unfortunately, those are ones I REALLY want to play.

i have been using windows 7 64 bits since before its release (RTM version). it works very well. the only annoying thing is that i have only 2GB of RAM and it eats more RAM than XP does. so i had to choose a lower texture quality in a few games to compensate for the memory usage and avoid memory swapping.

Another option, if you already have your XP disc, install Win 7 on a different partition and dual boot. If something doesn't work in Win 7 just boot into XP and install it there. Problem solved.

I'm using vista 64-bit, and have never had any problems. 64bit is way better then 32bit. (Waiting for windows 7 upgrade to come in the mail.)

It seems that everyone agrees that it should be stable for you to run games so good luck and if you have issues please let people know so that we can try and help.

I dont regret doing it. So for me yes, and besides I have been stuck in a 32-bit world for much too long anyways. :)

win 7 64bit is certainly not problem free when it comes to games... but the problems are minimal.

so far the only issues i have encountered are a few freezing issues with left 4 dead, and my screen flickering on and off occasionally mid game in heroes of newerth. aside from that i havent had any other issues in games.

Best bet of games? Really, the best OS for games is the era of the kernel OS that the game was built for. Overall, I'd say that WinXP is the most compatibly of the bunch, thus far. But that can quickly change....

Yeah for maximum compatibility for games released from 2009 and under XP is definitely the best bet. To future proof your PC though, might as well hop on board Win 7.

I find its less of a headache than with Vista in getting older games to work. I would get the Ultimate Edition and not the Home, as Home is missing some XP compatibilty features I believe.

i have been using win 7 64 bit for ages now and as has been reported the problems are few and far between, however you should beware that because of the 64 bit enviroment youwill have some problems if you are a serious gamer... you will find that while the applications themselvs might run well under compatability mode butthings like Grim Fandango simply will not install because their installer utilities are 16 bit, its a bit of a faf but you can get it running through a third party installer.

i even got day of the tenticle to rungh well through dosbox, of course you could just get it through steam.

I've been running the 64bit version of Win7 for several months and I've yet to have any problems with any of the games I play.

Win 7 64bit works great for me. Haven't tried to run many of my older games, but it's worked well with everything I've tried from the last few years and ran on Vista

I have a W7 64 Ultimate running in a i7, 6 GB DDR 3 1600 Mhz, HD 5870 and I've experienced problems in games: mouse wheel not recognized in Diablo II LOD, Warhead starting in windows mode and some problems with lag imput. On the other side Crysis Wars works at perfection, but IMO W7 backwards compatibility currently sucks.

Incorrect - Ultimate and Pro include a virtual PC like XP compatibility, this is NOT for gaming.

Works fine for me. Just turn off UAC because some games won't boot with it activated (it's the same in 32bit Vista and 7).

Win7 64-bit has been good to me. The oldest game I've played so far on it is Deus Ex (2000), certainly not the oldest of the PC gaming classics but it does run flawlessly (AND in 16:9 widescreen).

My PC is fairly new so I've only played a handful of games so far:Source games(TF2, HL2, CS:S), MW2, Crysis, some indie games, R6: Vegas 2, Splinter Cell (original), a bunch of Deus Ex mods, the Jedi Knight series and KotOR.

I have had problems with Max Payne 1, but supposedly, Vista users have the same issue as well.

I had an issue with Max Payne with audio, it was fixed with a community patch though. Now the game works perfectly for me on W7 64 bit.

Win 7 64 bit = creamy goodness...

Can't believe I had to wait until Vista died and Win 7 came out to really enjoy gaming once again...

Going from 32 to 64 is amazing....!!!

All my games ( so far ) run just fine under Win 7..

So stop reading these posts and go get it.....!!!

All my games that worked on vista work on Windows7 64bit, so don't worry!

Raxzor
Not true, if they worked on Vista 64 they should but alot of older games dont run the greatest on 64 bit. I have been trying to get Splinter Cell Chaos Theory to work for a while but it is a no go (it seems to be a problem with Starforce protection on 64 bit). Most newer games run good and the compatibility mode helps.
