Is Windows 7 a good OS based on how I will use my computer?

Because I will be buying a new computer, I need to know what OS will be the best for how I will use my computer. I use my computer for playing a few old video games and many video games from this decade. Also, I will need to use it to make some document that will also be opened on another Windows 7 computer. Thank you for your answer.

Well you don't need Windows 7 for that, as I think their newer OS is also suitable to all those things.

But Windows 7 is really nice and will allow you to do all the things you want.

Windows 7 is pretty much good for whatever you need out of a PC. Windows 10 will also fit your needs too if you want to future proof your PC with DX12 for new games.

If it's a brand new computer/build then best to go with Windows 10 at this stage so you get future proof with DirectX and also update support.

Windows 7 is what you want for compatibility with old games. E.g flight simulator x doesn't work on windows 10, not that I play it.

In terms of future proofing, you'll be fine. Vulkan works with Windows 7, no need for DX12. Valve already is going the Vulkan route which is all that matters since they control the majority of multiplayer gaming. (Dota and CS)

According to the steam statistics of what's being played, pretty much. Nothing else comes close (besides league of legends).

Because every gamer uses Steam and nothing else right?

You can't base a whole OS decision on just two games that the TC might not even play.

He said he's going to play older games, in which case WIndows 7 would be the best option. It gets updates till 2020.

And yes, I don't know a single pc gamer who doesn't primarily use Steam. The exception to this is the asian market, and they certainly don't care about what directx version a game is using. (League, dota, and mmorpgs)

I'm not sure why people are supporting DX12 in the first place, Vulkan works on every popular OS.

No sane dev(fable lol) is going to exclude Windows 7 support for the foreseeable future, it's excluding a huge portion of players.

Me. I just use Steam when I need to play a Steamworks game. :)

Most of my friends (if not all) as well. To us it's just another client.

I agree with this. There is no point in DX12 yet, unless it starts showing its benefits.

I remember Vista being recommended for DX10 but hardly any game used it. By the time it got used, people had already gotten Win7.

Apart from upcoming MS PC games (Halo Wars 2 etc) I don't see many developers dropping Win 7 or 8 any time soon.

I think Windows 8.1 is a good choice for playing games and using documents at present.

Unless you have a game that you know will NOT play on Windows 10, get Win10. Win7 is fine, but you'll probably get annoyed with all the "upgrade now" stuff anyway.

Bad logic here.

I did see some improvements with a few of my games when using Win10 after Win7, but I can't definitely say what component of the new OS was the ticket. The games themselves have not been reported to be optimized better for Win10 than Win7, but that is still a possibility. YMMV.

Windows 7 is fine for your needs, Windows 10 is fine as well. Ignore all this debate about DX12 and Vulcan and who Steam likes better - it's minutiae. I think if you were buying a new comp I'd just go straight to W10, but you'll do fine with 7 if the computer is a much better deal or something
