The last time i messed with Vista it had just been released and I heard nothing but bad things about it so needless to say i steered away from it. Has it changed? Is it a solid OS? whats the deal? I have always used XP. Im thinking of making the switch to the 64-bit as well. Any thought would been great.

I have been using Vista 64-bit on my gaming rig for about a year now. For a system that primarily does casual functions and gaming, I've found it to be pretty solid and stable.

Of course, you might want to consider trying the Windows 7 64-bit client instead, then buy the retail version of that when the time comes.

I hated Vista when it first came out. I had nothing but problems. Came back a year later and gave it another go. I have ran it for the past year with no issues. My new main machine is now running Windows 7 64bit, also...very few issues. Safe to go either route. But if you want to avoid purchasing, just download the RC1 Windows 7 build. Its good for about a year..for free! Can't beat that ;)

Just for the sake of usability, only go 64-bit if you have more than 4GB of RAM. Windows 7 is also a major improvement over Vista ;)

go straight to windows 7 RC x64, its faster and more stable than vista even though its still in RC. The only problem i have had with it is crysis warhead crashing and punkbuster kicking me on servers. this was fixed when I upgraded to the RC from the beta. The best part though is that it is free for about a year.

Like previously stated, good for if using over 4gb RAM to have it discovered as physical memory I have had some problems using AfterEffects, Lightroom and Photoshop in 64bit though And also you can upgrade from the 32bit, you would have to back everything up and start clean which is a pain
