it has a paid subscription for the blizzard servers. You can play the game for free on servers provided by private parties. Not the same quality but some have 2000+ people in one server. Not illegal or piracy either.

Pretty sure it is illegal to run a private WoW server.

Under the terms of their service, it's illegal, but not something you can be persecuted for. It's really vague. If you buy a physical copy of the game and modify it to play on a private server, you can do so, as long as you don't try to make money off of it.

I remember there was a story about this one woman that ran a private server and she was sued by Blizzard for it. She used it to EARN MONEY thru donations and that's where they got her. I believe it went to court. Found it.

It says she made 3 million dollars through donations, still technically "making" money off the players. So the loop hole would be not to take any money whatsoever, but then who'd run a private server for free?

You've neglected to mention the consumption of all available free time, reduction of personal relationships that are not related to WoW, and buttocks that ultimately will require a more spacious chair. EM

From what I've heard and read about Cataclysm, it's easier to get good loot and level. Plus the new dungeons can only be raided once a week so even if you were a hardcore player, you're limited by the game itself.

If all the donations went solely to the private server she probably wouldn't have been sued by Blizzard.

I just have to point out the vicious cycle of marketing and hype that seems to follow every WoW expansion. Every one of the expansions released so far has got people coming back to the game, glorifying it as a much better experience and a completely different game, then after a month or so the shine wears off and they realize it's the exact same treadmill it's always been.

Blizzard are absolute masters of hype.

Or the game actually is better, but that can't possibly happen can it?.... Cataclysm is by far the best "WoW" created so far.

Or if you are a mature adult you can handle it like anthting else and play it in moderation. I play for fun and at my own pace. I dont get all caught up in the raids and such.

From what I read a while back, it's not lower, it's technically more expensive. Basically they pay per hour. It could be beneficial for some, but a huge money sink for others.

Look at it this way; if you had a business, and knew that millions of people were willing to pay for your product, wouldn't you want to make money off it? Well... either way, it's pretty damn straight forward. They charge because they're a well known developer and KNOW they can get away with it. All those F2P games probably wouldn't sell if they had a monthly fee. Blizzard is different. It's basically the same reason why Activision charges sixty dollars for Call of Duty 4 expansion packs. They just know that they can get away with it, because the fans of these franchises just can't get enough. It's all business beneath the fabric of this art.

i understand what you mean. reason i ask about if its pay to play or free to play. is because $15 is a bit to much and i know i wont be on it every single day and every single time when i have time to spare. its just because everyone is talking about it and the new game the TV trailer makes it look cool.

PM with other PC games you have. i havent had a online buddy in a very long time and i hate playing online with people who doesnt want to use team work to win a match or battle etc.
