Well, I mean. I've heard so much about it lately, and it brings back so many good memories.

Like first setting foot in Ironforge and just... Ah, I've just had such good times on it. Problem is I wouldn't have much time to play...

Is it really hard to really "play" if you're not hardcore still?

if u can avoid MMO world i highly recommend doing so and keep playing single player rpgs or online RTS/FPS for online needs, but if u really can't avoid it try playing casualy as it will consume ur life and 1 day u get up and realize how much of ur real life u have lost and how many great games u have missed....

been a wow player for 5 years straight.....

If you don't have much time to play you might be best passing it up. But Cataclysm does look really good, especially if you're an old player.

Currently it's bugged filled (beta testing on live servers, literally they're releasing beta patches on live servers). Many of the bugs won't be fixed until after Cata.

Best bet is to wait a month at least until the bugs are mostly fixed if you're coming back after 6+ months, or a new player. It'll save you the pain of every week or another week of your class abilities being tweaked or trashed.

Some of the changes...

  1. 41 talent points (yes from 71, WoW has been XBoxed) at 85. You must put in 31 talent points in one tree to unlock the others.
  2. New glyph tiers: learn them once, permanent now, so you can switch as needed-- Prime/Major/Minor.
  3. Stats have changed: armor penetration and defense are gone. Introduction of the plate specialization (5% buff in a primary spec tree) and Mastery (spec bonus depending on class and spec tree). Spirit replaces MP5 (though exists still in calculating average mana regen over 5 seconds). Paladins gained a new power system (Holy power) tied to damage and healing spells (free no mana cost damage or heals).
  4. Almost every class now has a minor self-heal. Hunters can heal over time.
  5. Hunters don't use ammo anymore. Arrows and shot are gone, so are the quivers and ammo bags.
  6. CC is back in force. Cata will require it, as heroics aren't going to be easy. Hunters will be using their traps and mages iceblocking.
  7. Tanks have issues of holding aggro (consecration won't hold it anymore, you will have to work on it). Forget any WoTLK idea of holding aggro.
  8. Tanks will jump from around 55k raid buff average health points now to around 200k raid buffed in Cata (we're talking a huge jump in stats). This is due to how damage is going to be delt in Cata. It won't be fast and furious, but sustained.
  9. Healers will be forced to manage mana (no more stacking stats, very hard stop on that practice). Healing classes got a complete overhaul. Healadins have been totally revamped, and now have limited raid healing abilities.
  10. Mana matters. No more room pulling. Casters and healers will be strapped for mana. You will have to wait as both drink and drink and drink (mana tools also have long cool downs).

Theme of Cata is WoTLK was easy, now you're going to pay...dearly.

I thought they were making Cata more "player-friendly"...?

Well with WOTLK the pendulum swung too far towards player friendly. With the exception of high end raiding you could pretty much mindlessly power through most of the game content. I view Cata as bringing challenge back to the game...well hopefully.

Player and not the game, when I dabbled in WoW it was like 2 or 3 hours a day (about what I play daily for games due to school) and never had the urge to play anymore then that. After it got boring around 40ish I uninstalled and haven't had the urge to play again.

Player friendly doesn't mean easy. I like a lot of the changes, especially that as a hunter you don't need to buy ammo all the time any more. Or no more farming shards with a warlock. The self heal for rogues, so there's not so much downtime while leveling. A lot of useless talents removed from the trees. That's all player friendly. But at the same time it won't be as easy as it is now. When was the last time you saw a mage sheep an enemy? People will need to learn crowd control again and I'm looking forward to it.

"great games u have missed...." That is mostly the problem with MMOs.... but the line "consumes ur life" is just YOUR FAULT and no one elses.... if u can't control ur gametime no one else is to blame...

U see that's not the point at all, sure we can control it but why do we play MMO? To get connected with other players and have a massive multiplayer experience? The problem with that is, everytime u see another player that's better than you or in case of WOW has better gear/mount/etc.. Than you, no matter what, no matter if ur 12 or 45, your a female or male, you have a job or not, you atomaticly get the feel of need to be better than the other player, again problem with that is you ain't getting anywhere if u don't dedicate a massive amount of your time during the day/week to the game, so the game will automatically consume your life, this is why I said if ur planning to play WOW for story and rpg aspect of the game, u are better of playing so many single player games that are out there and comming in the future...

That is just stupid really. I have been playing WoW for a long time ago. 4 years I think. Maybe for the first couple of months I played a lot. But now no. I play maybe 2 hours a day like 4 days out the week. I go to college, have a job and a normal social life. No the people who get obsessed are the people who are social retards and if your worried about getting addicted you probably need help. But imo I say yes play WoW. It's fun and until you get tired of it you will enjoy it. Personally I am rather bored of it now. Cataclysm has me excited for the changes but I am waiting for Star Wars the Old Republic as soon as that launches my WoW account is gonna be frozen forever. I say look up ToR first to see if you wanna try that because playing a MMo since launch is something that just feels so awesome. It's like when someone tells me "I remember seeing The Beatles back in the 60's" and I think to myself "I hate you man"

No, YOU feel the need to get better than other players... I just play for fun. I know there will always be better players than me so it doesn't let me affect my gameplay. I just play to make MY character better and have fun.... (when I used to play anyway) I agree it takes away from other SP games, but consumes your life? only if you have an addiction problem...

Well sorry if I understood you wrong, it wasn't directly aimed at you, I'm just sick of same old comment that comes out on every WoW thread "Don't play WoW or your life will be no more" etc etc... I don't see those same comments with MW or Battlefield etc... and people play that even more than WoW sometimes...

Well, I mean. I've heard so much about it lately, and it brings back so many good memories.

Like first setting foot in Ironforge and just... Ah, I've just had such good times on it. Problem is I wouldn't have much time to play...

Is it really hard to really "play" if you're not hardcore still?

Wakanoid
Hardcore on WoW - ROFL to that - you mean you wouldn't have much time to raid? besides I've heard they've f^cked up everything with their new patch (the """tactics"""" it had)

I'll take the opportunity to post in here. The Shattering is on the public test realm and is apparently a release patch, meaning that the Shattering will happen probably next wednesday after maintenance. So if you want to come back to the game and see the world before it changes this is your last week to do so...

Oh and the patch is huge btw. 10GB in size and this is after a patch just a few weeks ago which weighed a similar amount.

I tried to go back a few months ago, raided ICC a few times did some dailies, I just couldnt get back into it, I didnt see what I was so addicted to. I didnt care if my gear was better about the stupid mounts etc... I am happy to say I am over that game. I wont be back for cataclysm. The only thing I really liked about wow was raiding, and just takes 2 much time, and is too dependent on other people.

Well now raiding is really. Almost too easy now people actually go around pugginf ICC and hardmodes. Vanilla WoW there was no such thing. Your title says "going back into" if you left it for some reason other then a break then don't wait for a different MMO imo ToR..

They made it easy towards the end for a reason.

if u can avoid MMO world i highly recommend doing so and keep playing single player rpgs or online RTS/FPS for online needs, but if u really can't avoid it try playing casualy as it will consume ur life and 1 day u get up and realize how much of ur real life u have lost and how many great games u have missed....

been a wow player for 5 years straight.....

Im Sorry but, i HATE when people post stuff like this It's not the games fault you give up your life to play it its your own, keep your priorities in check... If you let a game be more important than your life you have your own personal problems to sort out its not because, of blizzards evil agenda. I actually have posted a similar topic a few days ago about getting back into WoW & soon as i get some spare time this week im going to unfreeze my account for the 7 days and try out rolling a new warrior, theres alot of changes that have gone on in the game that ive read up on and the cata is hitting soon so they're is going to be TONS of new content seems like a fantastic time to jump back in

I also was contemplating a comeback... I quit a while ago (main character was an 80 mage - Mimba on Antonidas server - in case anyone from there comes across this).

I have to admit that the new expansion looks good. I really like the idea of Azeroth being redone, It got very boring lvling up alts in the same places I had seen 10 times over. Also the racials of goblins interest me greatly. But the thought of how much time I have put into WoW already kills my desire to return to it. When the achievements came out that was bad cause I was spending TONS of time getting those. I was already obsessed with WoW and those achievements made it even worse. I guess it all depends on what games I have at the time really. I'm a serious PC gamer so I always need something to fill the gaps between the good games, and WoW never let me down.

Hard? it's been getting ever more casual and newb-friendly.To me it's like a soap opera but interactive: it's something that remains constant, something you love because you've known it for so long and no matter what happens it will be there to fall back on.However,if you want a game that will really challenge and edify you, try EVE Online. There's a game that is always in flux and that rewards hard work, research and commitment.

If it has been getting easier, why has it taken even server's best guilds so long to get Lich King heroic down? Also, can I see your character please?

To be fair, I wasn't talking about endgame. I was talking about my own experience while solo leveling and group instances. It's definitely all gotten easier over time. I remember a time when groups could actually wipe on Arugal rather than face rolling. And the latest patch made my Disc Priest ridiculously easy to play solo or group pve. When I reached 70, since I don't have WOTLK, I felt all I could do was grind reputation since there probably weren't many people interested in doing classic and TBC dungeons at lvl60 or 70 rather than moving on to Northrend. Plus therewas no lvl70 bracket for all but one battleground. So I quit.

There is WSG, EoTS, AB, AV for up to and above level 70, plus you have arenas. 5-man content was made easier because the majority of the playerbase wanted it that way. Now the majority of the playerbase wants it otherwise, and so they've changed it yet again for Cataclysm. Levelling never has been challenging in WoW. Most of the enjoyment in the game comes from the end-game and the PvP, and any serious player and/or long-time player will admit that. They made it easier to level and get through 5-mans because people just wanted to reach the highest level and get on with the raiding and PvP. An example is that this time around, they set the level cap at 85 because most people don't want to spend their time levelling, they would rather get to the level cap and start raiding and doing PvP. It is harder to do 5-mans and level in Cataclysm, but they have set the cap lower because they said that people just want to level quickly and get to the cap.
