Man I played this when it came out for Xbox. So I bought it for Steam here the other day. And I have to say, while the engine or the combat has not aged well, the game features a good story with some of the best voice acting ever.

Characters are pretty cool too.

Whats interesting about Jade Empire that its an asian game, but made by westeren developers. This makes it a very uniqe game. The game features shallow leveling and combat, and there is nothing in the form of getting armor or weapons(yeah kinda - but its a one way street thing). It's not an RPG like that.

But the game just has something about it. If you like games, but feel that there are to many fantasy and sci-fi games out there, I think you will like this game. The setting is very different. Its KOTORs in asian mythology. Dragons, Martial Arts, Drunken Kung Fu, restlest Spirits, Chi, and all that kind of stuff.

I will recommend this. Dont expect it to be another KOTOR. Dont expect it as an RPG. Just sit down and play it, and forget everything you have heard about it. Take it for what it is, and I am sure you will enjoy it.:)

It is best to use a gamepad with the game. Personally, I prefer to use a X360 controller. I have never used the keyboard so I can't comment on that.

You use regular mouse and keyboard controls like in a shooter, and different clicks to different things.  For example, double tapping the strafe makes your characters dodge to that side while double tapping back makes you do a back flip or a backwards jump.  Basically, if you have played KOTOR, you will know how to control your character in Jade Empire.

For combat you use the mouse and the "E" button for powerful "chi" based attacks.  As with movement keys, there are different things to do.  For example tapping the mouse key will make you do a more elaborate attack than if you just clicked it once.

There is also something called combo attacks.  This consist of doing an area attack move in one style (often a "support" style) and then switching to another offensive style and completing a power attack (right mouse button I think).  This leads to instant kills in most cases.

The mechanics of combat are very simple, and somewhat satisfying, but the best part of the whole thing is the sheer variety of styles.  Also, enemy immunities to certain styles means that you really need to change them up quite often.

And the story is very cool, and there are atleast 3 different endings.

I actually felt that this game was REALLY lacking.  It wasnt even long, it took up a lot of space, and it was not very pleasing.  I mean, combat was kind of dull after a bit, and no real skill to the game (I just kicked the crap out of everything).  I was kind of dissapointed on how short it was, when I did beat the game, I felt like I wasted 40 bucks.

It's not a 100 hour RPG, true.

But for all the great production values that was put into it, the 20-30 hours it take, and the 2 extra playthroughs for the different endings, can give alot worth.

Combat is fun if you ramp of the difficulty.

The music and artistic direction is wonderful. The game has solid characters. The game has the same dialouge trees as the KOTOR games, and it's great how it works. It's an entertaining game and there is NOTHING like it on the PC. RPG haters might love this too due to the near real time combat.

I would like to think of this game as an experiment. Its a new cool IP. I like movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero.

Jade Empire is like that. But unlike many Japanese developers who make asian mytholgical games - Like Onimusha and Dynasty Warriors, Jade Empire does not feature a melodramatic structure.

The simple combat is probably the only thing that drags it down. Its not that combat is not entertaining - Its just not deep, or challanging. Its very involving and responsive and thats why I think Action fans will enjoy it.

Kung Fu style games are uncmmon on pc. its almost like a fighting game. Like a beat em up.

Jade Empire is one of the greatest PRGs ever. BioWare makes the best stories ever, I hope they make Mass Effect ( which I think will be the greatest RPG ever ) for PC too and don't wait 2 years after it's out for XBOX360 to make it for PC ( like they did with Jade Empire )

Very true. In fact, I thought JE was better than KotOR. One of the all time greats!

Prepare to be disappointed then. ME is one of the 360's premier exclusives, so it will definitely take AT LEAST 2 years for it to come out on PC.

Just picked up this game on monday and wondering why I havent heard of this game earlier!

The voice acting is great. The orge in the tea house and the rat guy in the ruins where funny. Reminds me of "Go for the eye's Bo, go for the eye's" from BG. Lots of cool dialouge or stories/insight to explore. Multiple choices dealing with NPC's.

Graphics for a ported game are very well done. Probably do to the enhanced textures for the Pc version.

Contols where a bit weird on the keyboard/mouse for the first bit but after a hour there easy to remember and alot easier than a gamepad imo. You can quick change your styles alot easier with the keyboard, as you have access from 1-0 instantly, where I found a gamepad you only have four presets and need to swap them to others if you want to use them. I also had troubles with changing a style and moving at the same time as my left thumb is moving me, yet I need to use that same thumb on the Dpad to switch styles ? Untargeting was easier also for myself since you can hit T instead of pressing the 7-8? buttons on the gamepad. Your mouse controls the turning so you are not limited in how fast you can swing your view around, very nice to hit T, whip your camera around and roll/flip/run your way through a hole in a group of bad guys, retarget and use some ranged attacks, mouse = more percision for myself anyways.

Combat was interesting. I thought it was a bit dull and unpolished at the start. It ended up being me who was the problem, since I was not using alot of the styles and create powerful combo's to use on each type of enemies, boss guys or just tactics to use when getting pounded. Now that I have made it to the main city and can spar, im trying out all the styles I have found. Think I have spent more time sparring than the storyline so far.

The story is captivating and has kept me interested in what is going to happen to my character and the people around it. Each party member has a distinct personality and view point into the events unfolding.

The only issue to bother me is there seems to not be enough combat between story updates. Seems to be a fight or two then stroy time, then back to a couple fights.

I have only got to the Imperial City and not sure how much or what is left in the game. But really enjoy the game so far. Might have to try out KOTR if it is like this.
