Exciting stuff.  I can't wait to see what Carmack can bring to the table given the advances since Doom 3 was first shown.

John Carmack is easily #1 graphic geius/artist ever! whats more, his style heavily  relies on open gl. i hope he makes an engine that will run on linux and give windows and dx a kick in the butt way for good... open gl is the answer .too bad it hasnt advanced since v2

id has been ousted in the gameplay department and ousted in the technology department, that's why they've run off to make games for consoles - so they can be someone again - pfft

i think the original dooms are some of the greatest games ever made, but id's time is long passed... i'd like to give id the benefit of the doubt and assume that they still have their mojo - but they don't

I'm sure the graphics on the new engine will be quite impressive but if it's like doom 3 the gameplay will suffer, but darn will it be pretty...

I thought Mr Carmack abandoned the PC ship?

I'm not sure after D3 how excited I could get for this. D3 was kind of a tech demo for the engine and not much of a game other then a basic shooter with no lights.

So, where is the news? It's been long since they announced that the next game wouldn't be part of any of the already existing franchises.

Ya, he is working on Wolfenstein 2 for...get this....the freakin 360.  He said they will "eventually" port it to PC but one of the greatest PC gaming pioneers has abandoned the PC for bullcrap reasons too, citing piracy as the primary reason.  Keep in mind this news was from a couple months ago, so I dont know if its still true.

But you know, like Chef from Southpark, we gotta remember him for what he has done for us and not for his fruity little club...

John Carmack and his ID gang not really about making games that much. He is more about making ENGINES;tools for others to make games. the fact that doom 3 sucked is becasue of the rest of ID team(although thier missionstatment was to modernize the original classic/retro doom, and NOT to reinvent the fps wheel)- and if you think quake4 sucked- blame Raven-software..

John Carmack is strictly into devloping technologies, and if he thinks he can make more money in a piracy-proof market, its his right and i dont blame him. pc games dont owe his ass. way back in 1994, i didn't know 1 single person who was running a legal copy of doom.....  ! in a way that really sucks

The last pure  ID title i really dug was Quake 3.(didn't care too much about wolfenstien ww2, it ddn;t tickle my fancy) i still play it. its great

I agree Carmack has every right to go in whatever direction he chooses to, but there is something called loyalty.  You cant find it on a contract and you cant use it as a basis for a legal argument, but dammit!  Many of use have been fans of his games and have played countless games on PC that used his technology, and in return it has gotten Carmack loads of cash and respect.  Why does he suddenly abandon us so he can develop engines that will be used in dumbed-down games?

JC and Co. had one thing in mind (besides self expression/making art), when he was doing KEEN, wolfenstein, then doom:

making money:  pure and simple. that was the goal and it was a success..

I do, however , agree as well, that it is tragic for a technologys awsomeness and beauty to be diluted and 'dumbed down' so it could fit through cramped windows (pun intended) instead of wide entrance doors....

and, afterall, it was the PC, where jc and id were born. if what you are saying might be tru IS true, that the mentioned folkes are turning thier backs on us, it does  feel like being abandoned in a majorly disloyal manner... i hope those rumors are ill founded
