In before the lock! Gamespot is owned by CBS Interactive who are huge supporters of SOPA so expect this thread and all others like it to disappear down the chute any time soon. The bill is ludicrous to the extreme and will do nothing but stifle creativity and shut down the internet as we know it if passed. For shame CBS! FOR SHAME GAMESPOT!
Gamespot staff is against SOPA, and so is the site. Our community manger Synthia has "blacked out" her avatar today, and has a blog about it, with a link to Google's petition against SOPA. Synthia's blogSign the petition! And yes, this is definitely off-topic for the PC & Mac forum, and according to the rules it should be locked, but I'm keeping it open, because this is important. Everyone needs to learn about this and protest this utterly ineffective and very dangerous piece of legislation. Sign the petition!ChiliDragon

Awesome Moderation work! :D This is something that as many people as possible need to see! Glad to see GS not catering to this crap!
Got my family to sign the petition on google as well.
So what's the problem then?FelipeInsideThe problem is that SOPA gives a game publishing company the power to legally shut down the entire domain Gamespot.com, if they think that posting videos or screenshots from one of their games is a copyright violation severe enough that it needs to be stopped. The company making this request is not required to notify Gamespot, or ask them to remove the content--which is already their right, and if asked, Gamespot is legally required to comply--and Gamespot would remain offline until they can prove they were innocent and didn't know that copyright was violated. Read the article I linked to. ;)

[QUOTE="ChiliDragon"][QUOTE="FelipeInside"]Thanks. Doesn't say much but from what I understand it's to combat Piracy? Basically every website developer has to be careful what they link on their websites?FelipeInsideBasically, yes. Electronic Frontier Foundation knows more. So what's the problem then? NOTE: I'm not Pro SOPA or Anti SOPA, I just want to know if people are over-reacting or not.
Say you upload a video to youtube that is a satire (like the hitler finds out videos) and the publisher decides that you violated the law (which it doesn't under the fair use act), youtube.com gets taken down until they prove that they aren't the pirate bay, which could be weeks.
It could literally make any website vulnerable to being extorted to the big media companies.

The thing is, if it weren't for the huge uproar over sopa, it would have passed. the MPAA/RIAA are behind about 10% of all contributions to all sitting senators in the united states.

Yea basically everything on wiki, facebook, youtube, forums etc, would be considered "stolen" material and could be shut down without question. If I posted a pony meme, that would be "stealing" property to them

SOPA won't. PIPA or OPEN will:P Classic strategy - everybody is focused on SOPA and then a slightly less evil law will pass, and people will cheer.

Could that mean that also certain "opposition" sites for example IGN, could try to do something to Gamespot, just as an example. It could cause a lot of backstabbing throughout companies.
And certain legit buying sites such as Greenmangaming, would they be safe from it all? Or would the system think it's an illegal site?
Just trying to get my head around it all, although I'm from Australia, trying to figure out if it would affect the entire world.
The system is collapsing, now Australia has the new retail consumer laws. If for example I buy a computer for my business, and that computer broke down which caused say $5000 worth of sales lost for the day, then I now have the rights to go back to the retailer I bought the computer from and demand compensationof my losses of $5000, due to them selling me a defunct product and causing me losses.
I know that's nothing to do with S.O.P.A, just saying how screwed the world is becoming.

It's totally wrong, it's pure censorship and in no way will it stop piracy.
I really hope it doesn't get approved but if it weren't for the huge outcry I think the bill would have passed :?
Besides SOPA there is also PIPA don't forget to read up on that too ;)

Of course its wrong, It removes Due Process. And completely shuffles the Burden of Proof, (where the prosecuting side no longer has the burden of proving the defenders guilt, the defenders are stuck with the burden of proving their innocence)!
Hell, we are also trying to amend that crap ruling the Supreme court ruled about how corporations are people, and money is speech... Because THEY ARE NOT!
Just realised that if it got passed, you might as well say bye to Youtube.
DigiTM73
And all other free internet sites. Facebook, gamespot etc. It's the worst thing ever

I agree, someone (or a site in this case should be proven guilty) that's how it should be in the civilized world.
What ruling is that ? I'm interested to know more.

Was ruled by supreme court on my bday Jan 21st 2010.
This has much more info on the second thing in my post. Also has a link to the petition if you are interested in trying to have it amended. Though any more discussion on that would prolly do better private messaging each other on here. Even though that ruling, is one of the ways this SOPA and PIPA are even on the ballet now, many on here wouldn't see it that way.

I don't get why those who are making the petitions don't have an International site... It's not just people in the US that wanna vote against it.[QUOTE="ChiliDragon"][QUOTE="FelipeInside"]So what's the problem then?FelipeInsideThe problem is that SOPA gives a game publishing company the power to legally shut down the entire domain Gamespot.com, if they think that posting videos or screenshots from one of their games is a copyright violation severe enough that it needs to be stopped. Ah, you have faith in the American Legal System. Sorry...
They don't need SOPA, it seems it's mostly a distraction for the masses. Feds are already chucking thedigital millenium copyright actat websites and shutting them down. Look at Megaupload for example (it's gone).
Look at Megaupload for example (it's gone).ShimmerManAnd the founder facing legal charges. I am not happy. Not. HAPPY. But that's what makes SOPA so double-bad: It's not needed! The legal protection for copy-right holders is already in place. What is lacking is the infrastructure and resources to enforce it in an effective manner. And by that I don't mean going after an individual who shared a file once, because that doesn't do anything to address the bigger picture and the root cause of the problem.

I don't get why those who are making the petitions don't have an International site... It's not just people in the US that wanna vote against it.Its a more connected world than ever, (a world economy if you like) Whatever happens in The States, will eventually start to effect many nations outside of its borders. Same for other countries as well. Having a global democracy where everyone can vote on it, well now, there is a good idea. Yet I could never see the people in power (and those living the good life) now, letting that ever really happen.
