of course you can, you just won't have access to an addition act in the game (4 without, 5 with) and you will have 2 less characters to choose from
Edit: nor do you need Diablo 1 to play 2
Woah! I didn't knew Diablo 2, had online. How does it work?FiFa_kirikiki
you log on, and you can either enter games via a lobby, or create your own.
Games can have up to 8 members iirc. Its a lot of fun, the enemies grow stronger and (I think) the loot drops are better too

That sounds fun, and new for me :) I've been thinking about getting this game...but something that bothers me are the graphics, are they any good?[QUOTE="mrbojangles25"][QUOTE="FiFa_kirikiki"]Woah! I didn't knew Diablo 2, had online. How does it work?FiFa_kirikiki

Blizzard has never exactly been on the cutting edge of visuals. Yet their games age well because of the excellent design, use of colors, etc.
imo, DIablo 2's visuals have aged well. Then again, I was there when it first came out. When I play older games I have not played before (at their time of release), its generally difficult for me to look past them.
I highly recommend you check out Titan Quests; its visuals are a lot sharper, and the gameplay is as solid as Diablo's. Very fun game, and nearly identical to Diablo...you can also take your offline character online, too.
