I've always been a console player (PS) just switched to PC. Bought this at Bestbuy, thinking it was a pretty good deal for 1300$ (but then I'm a total noob in pc knowledge so maybe i got scammed).

i7 6700 3.4 GHz, GTX 960 2gb, 2TB and 124GB SSD, 16GB RAM

Anyway. The first game I immediately went to buy was TW3 (it's the reason why I decided to switch from PS4 to PC). I bought it off GOG, and I was hoping I could play it later tonight.

But it turns out that it would take me around 2 weeks to download the entire game, the giant patch, the expansion pass, and all the DLCs and whatnot...

I always buy disks for my PS4, so I'm really not used to waiting before I can play the game. I always knew that my internet sucks -despite the fact that the company advertised 10mbps- but I didn't expect this...(I use wifi, modem too far from PC for wired connection, would that make it faster though? )

According to speed test, I have a DL speed of 3mbps, but the actual download fluctuates between 200kbps and 80kbps...

So is it better for me to buy physical PC games as well? (apparently not many ppl do that). Do PC dvds allow you to install them an infinite times like console blurays (I suppose not?) .

Just wanted to share my frustration of finally having a gaming pc but not able to use it as intended T_T

I game mostly on PC and only buy physical... Usually if it comes with a steam key it still installs from disc though. But there are patches and DLC and stuff too. That internet is bad tho... I have 30Mbps DSL for $30 a month.

Yeah you really do need better internet. I pay $65/mo for ~90Mbps.

Takes me less than 30 min download TW3 installers (all of the patches, DLC, and expansion).

I don't even have a disc reader in my new, similar PC build.

@daijobu93: Yeahhh you're gonna need to upgrade your internet. Most high end PC's don't even have disk drives anymore. Everything is digital nowadays. Even when you buy games in the store the disk will only have the installer and you'll have to download the game.

Enjoy living in 1990 and good job wasting a bay in that PC.

If you're going to have a computer you need better internet. If you're paying for 3 and aren't getting 3 go call up your ISP and have them fix their lines.

Witcher 3 btw has a disc version and you dont need internet to play it ( though its highly recommended to download the patches )

most pc games at least AAA games do come with a disc but they still need internet since you have to activate them on Steam/ EA origin or Ubisofts Uplay

It really isn't. I built something for 1200$, more powerful...a year ago.

I could fit a 980 Ti in a 1300$ rig. It's twice as fast as your 960.

You'll also be very disappointed if you switched from PS4 to PC solely for TW3. It'll have much better performance and better graphics but that doesn't justify switching from an otherwise very decent console.

You'll get over having physical copies really quickly with great apps like Steam. Disk Drive is a waste of space in the PC and a waste of money. I have blu-ray in my laptop and I regret it. I've never used it except to burn a few CD's.

maybe it's the wifi? unless you can confirm that's it not your wifi, it could be the wifi.

take a laptop and connect it directly to the modem and then do a speedtest. if you don't have a laptop, take your phone and stand next to the wifi and do the speedtest on your phone.

@gamertushar123: I've seen some youtube videos doing benchmark test with the same video card but worse stuffs for others, it seems good enough.

I'm not asking for 60 FPS. Having being a console player until now, having a stable 30 fps is good enough for now.

@Kh1ndjal: Yeah I borrowed a ethernet cable from my roommate, and suddenly I'm getting 700kbps! I actually managed to download the whole game installation parts overnight.

Unfortunately, I keep getting an error issue when trying to install, and GOG says I have to re-download the whole thing with their software...

THIS IS JUST GREAT. I'm starting to miss the plug-in-n-play of the consoles...T_T

@Juub1990: Well I'm not gonna play just TW3. Now that I have a PC, I will get all future games on PC. PS4 will be for the exclusives and games that could already run very well, maybe like MGS5 that is already 1080p 60FPS.

@daijobu93: I have the GOG version of TW3 too (well I do own a physical copy, but its a gog key) and I didn't have any problems.

If some files are corrupted you can just check and repair them without downloading the entire game.

Its next to "PLAY", click to "MORE", then "MANAGE..." and then "VERIFY/REPAIR".

Job done :).

If the internet was advertised at 1+ mb/s speeds and you are getting <DSL speeds (in the kb/s range) I think it is time to shop for a new internet provider, or ask them to look into your problem because that is terrible.

Yeah, one downside to PC gaming is the huge games and most requiring downloading of some kind (generally better deals can be found through online retailers, too). It is a tiny tiny price to pay, having to wait a few hours to download a game before playing, but one that can be lessened by better internet.

Damn! 1300$ ?! You should've consulted with us first :D

You don't need an i7 6700 or even 16GB Ram , you need a better GPU ...like 970. You can sell that CPU and get a cheaper one and invest in a better GPU. With the current rig you can have better results than consoles but it would've been great if you had a better GPU.

About the internet thing, i have the same problem , you gotta buy the physical copies or get the files from a friend or someone.

You know when you think about it, all in all for $1,300 at BestBuy I think they OP did alright. I've seen builds with last gen i3s & 750tis for $1,200 at Bestbuy. You could've done better but you didn't do bad OP! @mjorh, why would he want to downgrade anything? With his CPU he'll future proofed for a fairly long time on that side. Albeit his CPU is a non K 6700 but since he is new to PC I doubt he'll be overclocking anyways. Also 16GB of RAM is the ideal amount to have going forward. Not only are games requiring more & more of it on the PC side due to bad porting, it is a PC we're talking about & I'm sure the OP will multi-task on it.

The only thing you really need to upgrade in that PC ASAP is the PSU @daijobu93. BestBuy sells cyberpowerpc & ibuypower pre-builds & they are both notorious for using cheap PSUs. If your PC is made by either of them you need to upgrade it soon. The PSU can take everything else in your PC with it if it craps out on you, you always want to put a high quality PSU in your builds to prevent that IMO. You'll want one that is at least 550w but I'd strongly suggest no less than 750w for future expansion. Get one off tier 1 or 2 of this list, http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html.

Also the 960 is capable GPU for now, it will play any game in 1080p with a mix of high & med settings at frame rates better than 30FPS. So you're definitely gonna get a better experience than console with it. Although with it being a 2GB one you will have to upgrade it sooner than later. If you have the money to burn a GTX 970 would do much better but at that price range the AMD R9 390 is a way better buy. Whatever you do just know the only real weak link in that system you bought is the PSU unless it's a steam box or some type of console replacement that you cannot replace the PSU in.

Welcome to the better side of gaming. As for your problem, only thing I can think of is your internet speed.

I have a 50/50 mb/s internet speed and a large 10-15gb game typically takes me about 3-4hours to download and install.

@Rob27shred: thanks a lot for your elaborate answer and helpful advice. I currently have a 600 W AC power adapter (at least that's what listed on HP for my model). Is that good for my rig? If not i will change it, but it seems like a daunting th ing to do...I would never dare opening up a PS4 and swap parts.

Fortunately spending an extra few hundred $ is not an issue right now so I will look into replacing everything you suggested. That includes the power supply and possibly a video card. So would you recommend a GTX 970 or 980, or better? I only have a 1080P screen and I actually managed to run TW3 with everything on Ultra and get a good stable FPS. So I'm really happy. So I don't know if getting a better video card would be overkill if I could just wait for their eventual price drop.

Also do you think i should swap CPU fan? Someone told me that the default ones in pre-builT PC are bad, and could cause problem down the road if the CPU is not properly cooled.

@dethtrain: yeah i only have 35 gigs left so i didn't even install TW3 on it (my only PC game atm). Is it substantially faster to run games installed on SSD? If so I may consider buying an extra SSD because right now loading time for TW is not substantially faster than on console.

@mjorh: Yeah most certainly the i5 & 970 would be the better setup if he were building his PC. All I was saying is at this point there is no reason to downgrade. He'd end up losing money on trying to sell what he has & then have to put out more money to get back up & running. Just wouldn't be worth it in his position.

@daijobu93: Ok so your PC is an OEM HP build not a custom pre built from ibuypower or cyberpowerpc. That changes things a little bit, while OEM products do not use the best components either it should be much better than the crap PSUs ibuypower or cyberpowerpc uses stock. Also if you are not overclocking your PC at all a 600w PSU should have plenty of headroom with your specs. I can tell you are not comfortable with the idea of taking apart your PC yet, so I would say you are OK with that PSU for now. I would recommend that you start to learn how to build a PC though, as it is knowledge that you will need to upgrade & troubleshoot your system when need be. Don't worry PCs are totally different from consoles in the fact that they are made to be up-gradable & have parts switched in & out as your needs change.

What type of cooler is on your CPU? I'm assuming it is an air cooler cause you are referring to it as a "CPU fan" Although more than likely it probably is a lower quality one that will not perform too well under high loads. You probably do want to change it out for a better cooler but there are some deciding factors to consider. 1 - Is your CPU getting too hot with the current cooler while gaming? You need to get a monitoring program & have it running while you are gaming to see what temps you are getting on average & the max temp it reaches. I'd recommend HWinfo64 for that, http://www.hwinfo.com/download.php. 2- How much room do you have in your case for the CPU cooler? Most decent air coolers are fairly large so you need to measure the space between your CPU's socket & the side of your case to determine what can fit. If an air cooler is too big then you will have to look into low profile air coolers or AIO water coolers for your CPU. Here's a really good air cooler for CPUs http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099, here's a good low profile air cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608029, & here is a good AIO water cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181030. Also once you have determined that you need a new CPU heatsink & decided on which one you will also need to get thermal paste to attach the new CPU cooler http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA85V3H87677&cm_re=MX4-_-35-186-038-_-Product since that is what acts the conduit for the heat to pass from the CPU to the cooler. I'd strongly advise that you watch a few YT videos on how to change a CPU cooler before you attempt it, but do not be overwhelmed by it as it is not as hard as it may seem in the 1st place & keeping your components as cool as possible will give them a much longer working life. So upgrading the CPU's cooler is definitely something to consider regardless of what temps you are getting with the current one. FYI your CPU should be around 20 to 30 C while idle & go no higher than 85 C when under load. If you see temps higher than that in either situation change the CPU cooler ASAP!

That leaves the graphics card, if you are happy with the performance of the 960 it is not a pressing issue but upgrading to a 970 or 980 would get you much better performance. With your PC only having a 600w PSU I'd advise that you stick with Nvidia for now since AMD's cards are less efficient & draw more power. Between the 970 & 980 I'd recommend the 970 to you because you are only gaming at 1080p & the price vs performance ratio is much better than a 980 or 980ti. I think a 970 would hold you over for a couple years till you get more comfortable & familiar with PC building & be a significant enough boost in performance to warrant doing it now. Also switching graphics cards is a much easier operation than changing a PSU or CPU cooler for that matter so I believe it is something you could confidently do yourself.

Like I said before all in all your PC is not to shabby at all, definitely at the higher end of mid grade system specs so don't listen to people who are saying you need the best of the best to game on PC cause that just is not true. With a 970 put in it you'll be good to go for a few years & even after that it's just a matter of upgrading certain components to keep you going. Your main concern right now should be to make sure the CPU cooler is you have is enough & if not replacing it, then a GPU upgrade if you want better performance right now. I'd still recommend upgrading the PSU at some point but do not think it is as pressing of an issue as I did in the 1st place. Check out www.overclock.net & http://www.tomshardware.com/ for tips & info on PC building/up-grading there is a ton of good info on those sites, especially for someone who is just getting started with PCs like yourself.

If you have any other questions or need advice just shoot me a PM through here & enjoy gaming as it should be!

Get Witcher 3 on disk. It came with full installation just like Witcher 2. You can download initial small patches manually without the GOG Client, which always updates to the latest version (which means waiting for many hour to do so).

A lot of game problems are solved in first few small patches. You can google them and download them manually (for example "Download Witcher 3 Patch 1.01 for GOG").

Manual patches are easy to install on games that are powered by GOG (like Witcher 3, due to lack of DRM). And meanwhile update/fix your internet for future games.

@FelipeInside:

I wish that were the case but realistically I will never have all that speed free to download the game if multiple people are on my internet using things like Netflix and Youtube plus lets not forget that Steam won't offer you 50mb/s download speeds. Most I've seen games download is at around 4-6mb/s.
