You're good, vanilla GTA IV is the best GTA IV, finish it like that, if you did till now on consoles or something, then just mess around with some new cars, maybe some new "maps", handling configs for drifting and such to pair with those maps. , check GTAinside.

There are a lot of mods for the game.

There are mods that let you play as different characters than niko, or even as a giraffe. The possibilities are endless ^^

Than there are the graphical mods, that make the game look way better.

But as DanialDust said the game is great vanilla too.

I'm using the latest Icenhancer, Better road textures and Better city textures.

DO NOT play the game in vanilla, it looks like crap and runs even worse. While there are very few fixes for the poor performance, it can look amazing. If you have a good computer then IMMEDIATELY get the ENB series graphics mod. Also try and find the 6GB texture mod floating around, although it is difficult to find nowadays. Definitely pick up some of the car mods, and make sure you enable AA through Nvidia control panel (or AMD) since there is no in game option.

Vanilla looks so much better than ENB it's not even funny, ENB might look good in pictures, but in motion it's terrible and it completely destroys all of GTA 4's personality and atmosphere and those are what makes GTA, GTA. I also find it funny that you say it runs bad vanilla yet you recommend higher res textures and graphics enhancers.

I am looking forward to GTA V. But if it has anywhere near the lack of optimization that GTA 4 did on pc, they can keep it.

That being said since you have the powerpoint presentation. (there are some mods that really make the game look fantastic)

If you haven't already, beat it in Vanilla. It's quite an achievement, I've spent hours just people watching and screwing with the living world, creating a riot of cabbies attacking each other or making the cops get into a gun battle with local gangsters. It's one of the best open world games ever made, so alive, and the stories are great too.

Did you get just GTA IV or Episodes as well? Episodes is pretty amazing so I hope you got that too.

For mods I didn't bother since it was kind of a hassle, but start small, try car mods. You should definitely check out the DeLorean time traveler mod that lets you travel to different times of day, the ENB and ICEnhancer (or however you spell it) mods are beautiful, but you need a fantastic rig to run them, and they tend to be very glitchy and remove some of the little details Rockstar put in, so I avoided them completely.

On the subject of car mods, any recommended mods to improve handling in the game? All the cars drive like their tires are made of soap and my searches haven't yielded any good alternatives.

I didnt really enjoy the game until EFLC. Mostly because of how bad of a character niko was. The story was ok in the original, but to me niko was boring and didnt have a personality for me to get attached to.

Maybe the earlier ENBs yeah. But the latest enb, even in motion, destroys vanilla it's not even close.

LegatoSkyheart

What are your specs ?

it doesn't take a huge hit in FPS. Better textures demand more from your system

Probably the best time to get that game when most people have a system that can run it properly. No need for performance enhancing mods or patches anymore.
