I just bought OB for $40 and am having second thoughts about the game. I've never played Half Life before and don't know if it is a game I will enjoy. I've always been interested in the game since it's '04 release, but haven't got around to playing it. I like fps and I really liked Halo(don't hold it against me, I know hermits despise the Halo series). I've heard good things about TF, but when I watch some of the gameplay videos it looks boring to me. The only PC multiplayer only game that I've played and enjoyed was Quake 3 Arena. I wish I could download a demo of the game just to try it out. Should I return the game and get something else like UT3 or GeOW? Should I just open the package and take a chance? What to do?

I don't want to be disappointed like how I was when I opened and watch the Transformers dvd. OMG, I could have returned that crap for a profit and watched it for free on stage6! Good thing it was a Christmas gift, but I could have gotten at least a good $15-$20 for it. Damn!!!!!!!!!!!

I think there's a half-life 2 demo. You should try it.

I think that the half-life series is one of the Best fps ever made. Just my opinion.

I loved the Halo series, and I'm loving what I've played so far in HL2.

Portal is pretty sick, and TF2 is a blast to play online. Screw COD4, Halo and TF2 are the only multiplayers i need

HL2 is pure class! EP1 is just as good, and EP2 is one of the best games i've ever played (despite it's short length).

i don't like single player halo 3. there's not much to it apart from trekking around good looking levels shooting at good looking enemies. there are some good moments but overall it's pretty unexciting. the HL2 series on the other hand are challenging, INTELLIGENT, and very well-crafted games. valve are well-aware of how gamers think while playing and i believe this is what the gameplay in the HL2 series exploits. there's continually something new being offered, you'll always be fooled into the same situations, and you'll never ever be bored! but i'm a die-hard HL2 fan, i love the series. portal is awesome. don't know about TF2.

open that box up foo! seriously, the Half Life 2 games are going to give you an epic singleplayer experiance, and Portal alone is probably worth the $40 you paid. and i really think you should give TF2 a try before writing it off as boring, imo its the best shooter/MP game this year

Normally I would be more polite, but I totally agree. WTF dude, youre sitting there asking whether or not you should play Halflfie 2 when it is universally agreed that it is one of the greatest action game series in existence.

To be honest, I envy you...I wish I never played Halflife to this point so I could play HL2, Episode 1, and Episode 2 all consecutively.

My friend, please...just play the game and have your world changed. I too enjoy Halo, but relative to Halflife it isabout as appealing as a turd. Not to mention there is Portal, GOTY material imo, and TF2, an awesome update to one of the greatest online shooters ever.

Why its a good game:
-Solid gameplay: nothing revolutionary, but it is rock-solid
-Cinematic moments: no cutscenes...at all! Instead, all the significant moments are done real time through the player's perspective. This is why HL2 is one of the most immersive games out there
-Good graphics: no, its not the most advanced, but it is still great. Good textures, beautifuly rendered NPCs, various environments...awesome.
-Gravity gun: trust me, its awesome
-Characters: Alyx, Dog, Barney, Eli...the list goes on, and theyre all memorable. And having the beautiful and smart Alyx along will turn her into one of your favorite heroines. Cortana? pffffft, b**** please, get out of here.

Even the occasional person who did not like Halflife will admit that it is a good game. So just play it man!

Indeed. I have COD4 for my 360 and I must say that it is vastly overrated.

You should play the original Half Life game first to even understand some of the characters and the storyline. For instance, you don't even know the relevence of the crowbar (When all you've got between you and certain death is a crowbar, ...you learn to appreciate it!). Let alone how much of a joke Barney was in the first game compared to now.

Btw, I envy you too! You'll enjoy it, ...trust us!

either way, im not going to play them but let me say, Team Fortress two is so good i'd pay fifty bucks just for that.

and if portal didnt make me sick, i'd definately love to finish it

first thing first -- Half Life 2 is a very good game. I like the 1st one alot more, but with Orange Box, the entire HL2 package just got better than ever.Chances are good that you would likeit like.

that said, i'm not sayingthat you won't be disappointed. it seems to me that you like fast pacedand straightforward gunplay more. Orange box doesn't exactly fit if that's what you're particularly into. my advice - you should take chance, just to see what all the hype is about if not anything else. in the meantime, download the Quake 4 demo ( which includes a multiplayer component ) and try it out. i have a feeling that this might be your cup of tea. that is also a great game, in case you haven't known.

Here's the break down of Half-lfe 2:

Graphics - The enviroments still look better, and are more interesting than most games being released today despite being over 3 years old.

Story - as far as FPSs go the story is entertaining, and the presentation is excellent considering the game has pretty much no cut scenes.

Gameplay - now HL2 has some awesome action at times, but the game is pretty spread out so if you want to be shooting at something 90% of the time HL2 is going to dissapoint on that end. Still the action that you do get is awesome, and though the AI is dumb as rocks the enemies are timed and placed well enough to make it interesting. Most levels are unique, and well designed outside of the crappy load areas.

I say if you want to consider yourself a gamer then you need to play half-life2, not doing so is like not listening to the beatles, or watching citizen kane. Slim chance you might not like it, but completely ignoring it is unthinkable.

Put it this way, if it wasn't for its somewhat dated graphics and this was the first year half life 2 came out, it'd win goty easily. The lighting is great, but the textures are somewhat dated. They looked dated back in 2004.

But as for the gameplay and sound? Amazing. Now if you haven't played the original half life, you'll be a bit confused at points. But this game does well to pick you up to speed. I'm not sure the demo would show this games true strength though, and thats its atmosphere.

How can you have second thoughts if you've never even played any game from the series before?

Install it, you won't be disappointed.

Try out the demo. I wasn't particularly impressed in the least bit with Half Life 2, but I still found it enjoyable. I mainly just want Orange Box for Portal and to try out Team Fortress 2 so I may just order them separate off steam.

It's even better to play HL2, HL2:Ep1, & HL2Ep2 consecutively. Episode 2 is the best entry of the series and would make you appreciate HL2 even more. And yes, I'm a honest Halo fan as well. The character & ending of Portal makes the game alone & I'm having a blast with TF2.

Half Life 2: Episode 2 > Half Life > Half Life 2 > Half Life 2: Episode 1

I found Half Life 2 to be entertiaing for the most part. It got dull around some sections, but really intense in others. I would install it. It's a good game you shouldn't be dissapointed with. If not, Portal is kickass.8)

half life two is basically a movie. id say about 5% of the time you are watching things happen. your living a story, and it unfolds amazingly. if your more into the shoot-em-up games (hence quake 3) then this may not be the game for you, this game is slower (mostly) and a lot of the time just plain suspenseful. personally hl2 is my favorite game. but it may be a different story for you. and i didnt really like tf2, my main online shooter is DoD:S or americas army.
