I enjoyed it, but the gameplay felt lacking. I'm gonna buy the sequel but I don't feel that ME's gameplay is the reason more because of the story. Has anybody else played the game and felt this way?

I felt like the gameplay was just good enough to consider the game amazing. The only thing that it really lacked was useful free exploration.

The game also really lacked role-playing...

i thought the backstory and lore was more interesting than the actual story we were following, but there was a fair share of Epic moments in the game... only way i will buy a sequal is if it can detect our previous save games and let us continue from where we left off

I think Bioware gets more credit than they deserve. Don't get me wrong great game, but I was expecting a few weeks worth of game-play and when I finished it in a week, it felt short. Bioware games KOTOR 1 and 2, now ME have a grand feel to them, but Bioware seems to break everything down into small sections that feel like your just lead down a path, not go were you please type of game-play.

I'm the opposite - I liked the combat and general gameplay, but felt that the characters and story were rather weak.

Bioware games KOTOR 1 and 2,

Bioware didn't make KOTOR 2.

Yeppers.....Obsidian made KOTOR 2.

As for Mass Effect -

  • story is lacking; not bad, but not that great
  • combat grew dull, perhaps playing an adept makes the game too easy???
  • Controls good, slight issues with sensetivity with the driving vehicle
  • Upgrades - half are worthless, just remove them from game
  • Characters = lackluster and rather dull
  • Side missions - repetitive and boring - more variety needed
  • Main story is short - can play through in 6-8 hours - depending on any side missions I side track myself with
  • Graphics = Very nice...not a fan of the motion blur, good thing you can turn it off/on

Perhaps when the downloadable contect comes out, it'll spice things up a bit....

Yea, the cover system detracted from my enjoyment of the game and the story while intruiging, came out with only one ending

Very good game, it would have been great if you could interact with your crew a lot more i.e. Kotor 2.

I really liked the combat.RK-Mara

Same. I hate turn based RPGs. Only one I could stand was Fallout series because it required some thought on how you used your AP meter. And the cover system wasn't bad, better then GTA 4 if you ask me.

I thought that the gameplay as in combat, camera, controls, cover system etc. were all excellent for a RPG. It just lacked a bit of depth in the character and choices area. Plus a bit of extra lenght would had made it more memorable for sure.

Mass Effect 2 needs to adress a few issues:

Fix the cover system. It's not horrible, but it's clunky.

More freedom to explore

Longer main quest (more planets)

A more non-linear path to goals

More interesting/likable squad mates. Garrus, Tali, and Wrex were the only memorable ones, IMO.

to me, the cover system is horrible. It shouldn't be forced. it constantly interfers the flow of combat, and we should be able to decide for ourselves whether we're going to cover or not.

another thing needs to be fixed -- must-drop loots or limited inventory size -- pick one. either go back to the conventional RPG route (we get to decide whether we want the loots!) or go the JRPG route = unlimited inventory, and then they can drop anything and everything after combat.

as for the next two to become great RPGs...I don't see it happen since they'll only be the middle and conclusion of a Hollywoodish trilogy.

After the initial fanfare from finishing the game, I look back and feel that it was a pretty boring game. I finished it more for the principle of the thing than because I felt interested by it.
