as a few others said, Focus on a few firearm skills, Specifically Small arms is often the bread and butter (dont be fooled, small arms are conventioonal warfare weapons (anything below a flame hrower or minigun really). They offer some of the games best, and most reliable weapons, and cheapest to use and maintain.
Lockpick is worth your investment, and so is some of the more social skills. Such as speech. Oh and get the "comprehension perk and the one that gives +3 kill points per level up as early as you can, they will both let you experience a huge jump in the skills you have very fast. And when leveling up, pick perks that does not give skill bonuses, rather pick those that gives unique benefits, resistences, or ingame help (as finding more ammo, or caps. Far higher chance to score hits and so on)
They are not essensial tho, none of the above is. They are however the easiest.
I think some of the golden skills (if you have the goty edition even more so). Small arms, Stealth, speech, lockpick. That combo would be something like a stealth asassin/sniper. and packs a punch.
If you have the GOTY edition I would add that it is entirely possible to max out all skills, due to the level cap increase and the bubbleheads (small tokens hiden around the wasteland, that raises either a skill with +10% or 1 to the primary stats.
Fallout 3 can be playied in however way you like tho, My personal way of playing it, does not mirror that of other people, with my group of friends, we focused on entirely different playstyles, and we all enjoyied the game alot.
Oh, and power armor in the game are not automatically the better option, depending on the perks you pick when you level up.
