Right, so I watched the review and am aware that it is not an fps so I will resist the urge to play as such. Any other suggestions that I may find helpful upon leaving the vault? I know there was a thread like this a while back but I unable to dig it up for some reason.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Go to Megaton and do the Wasteland Survival Guide quest for Moira.

Sell any ammo for guns that you don't use. Easy caps.

Pick up junk lying around the wasteland and sell it.

Don't drink or sell any Nuka Cola Quantum. It will come in handy for a sidequest later on.

Don't try to get 100% on every skill, it's impossible, focus on one or two firearm/melee skills and then choose the skills you want. Exploring and scavenging is key though be careful as the wasteland is a hospitable place if you only have a 10mm handgun and four clips. Quests grant you the biggest rewards, as do some Holotapes though they mainly provide great information left behind by others.

Save often (quick save and proper save). Customize your controls. Use http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_3 but don't over use it or you'll spoil your fo3 experience. Just explore and have fun.

Before you go to Megaton you can get some caps from an ex hooker lady in Springdale (to the left when you exit the vault). When in Megaton, speak to Moira Brown in her shop. She will give you a huge side quest that you can use to gain experience/improve your character. Also, make sure you disarm the atomic bomb, that way you'll get a house in Megaton, which will make things a lot more comfortable. And of course go out there and explore.

Utterly good advice!

To TC, if you shoot at the sky, your chances of alien encounter increase.

You don't really need any tips it isn't a deep RPG and you aren't really going to miss anything if you explore. Find the Bobbleheads and magazines to increase your attributes and skills, talk to the named characters for quests.

Don't blow up Megaton! Outside of Megaton there is a rock with some trees around it. The rock is fake. Activate it and you will find some goodies.

as a few others said, Focus on a few firearm skills, Specifically Small arms is often the bread and butter (dont be fooled, small arms are conventioonal warfare weapons (anything below a flame hrower or minigun really). They offer some of the games best, and most reliable weapons, and cheapest to use and maintain.

Lockpick is worth your investment, and so is some of the more social skills. Such as speech. Oh and get the "comprehension perk and the one that gives +3 kill points per level up as early as you can, they will both let you experience a huge jump in the skills you have very fast. And when leveling up, pick perks that does not give skill bonuses, rather pick those that gives unique benefits, resistences, or ingame help (as finding more ammo, or caps. Far higher chance to score hits and so on)

They are not essensial tho, none of the above is. They are however the easiest.

I think some of the golden skills (if you have the goty edition even more so). Small arms, Stealth, speech, lockpick. That combo would be something like a stealth asassin/sniper. and packs a punch.

If you have the GOTY edition I would add that it is entirely possible to max out all skills, due to the level cap increase and the bubbleheads (small tokens hiden around the wasteland, that raises either a skill with +10% or 1 to the primary stats.

Fallout 3 can be playied in however way you like tho, My personal way of playing it, does not mirror that of other people, with my group of friends, we focused on entirely different playstyles, and we all enjoyied the game alot.

Oh, and power armor in the game are not automatically the better option, depending on the perks you pick when you level up.

Stay away from the North East corner of the map, at least until you're a high level. There be Deathclaws, and they will destroy you.

The Ranger Armor is by far the most superior in the entire game. Once in the National Mall, go to the History Museum, find the ghoul doctor and revive Riley. Complete that quest (it's a long quest and pretty difficult to do) but you can get her armor afterwards (39% DR, +10 small arms, +1 Luck, +5 AP) and also get caps for each location in the city that you find--comes out to well over 2000 caps the first time you talk to Riley afterwards because it takes into account each location you've found before the quest. My point is...just do it.

broken_bass_bin

This is true, but it also houses one of the coolest places in the entire game (in my opinion)...Olney Powerworks. I actually felt like I was IN that place...it was so immersive. Oh, and a hint for the Deathclaws. Find the Dart Gun schematic, make the weapon, and use it on them...makes the fight a breeze.
