Just got minecraft and am having some trouble?

So I just bought minecraft but when I open it and go single player and play I get a snow map, and then wait till night no enemies spawn. So where is the survival option?

Monsters will only spawn where it's dark and at night, also make sure your difficulty setting is above peaceful, no monsters spawn on that mode.
