specs

Acer Quad Core Q6600
2 GB DDR2 (PC5300)
320GB HD
on-board Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
300W PSU

I added a 8600GT aswell as a wireless network card.

Heard people saying that 300W wasn't enough for a 8600GT and some who said it was alright. Is it good enough to run it safely?

With a wattage that low i can almost guarantee you have lame amps on your +12 and +5 volt rail. Even if you dont ( which you do) id get something DECENT @ 500w or more.

Probably. Just make sure you add a PSU to the list the next time you upgrade something since you have zero headroom with what you have.

Ya I don't intent to add anything else anytime soon so hopefully I'll be fine until I add a new HD or buy a new video card.

Just in case, whats the ideal temp for both my card and CPU? What's the max tolerable temp they can go up to. Might have to check them often just to be on the safe side.

The Q6600 on a stock HSF is around 40c idle and 50c load with around a 3-4c difference between cores.

I wouldnt worry about the video card. As long as you dont run your computer next to a fireplace it wont get hotter than it can handle.

This is also factoring in ambient room temp which can change things a little in either direction.

Excellent, thanks for the info.

One last thing, If I do decide to get a new PSU, which one should I go for between these 2:

http://www.f3d.com/item.php?pid=80

Unfortunately this site don't seem to give much info about those, but atleast we know how much W they do. :P

Honestly, you should be careful when buying cheap-o PSU's. I had one in my old rig a couple years ago and it fried my GPU. Luckily the CPU survived, but I immediately got an Antec NeoPower after that debacle.

I may have just had bad luck, but it's kind of scary to think that it could fry your system. If you have some unstable voltages, there's a chance something could be destroyed.

P.S. I was not OC'ing with my old PSU. If I had been doing that, I would've been asking for trouble.

Dont get either one of those.

I know it sounds cheesy but the whole "you get what you pay for" cliche is NEVER more true than with a PSU.

Those fans probably have low mean time failure components, capacitors that are made in uganda by slave laborers and probably the lowest allowed amps on all of the voltage rails. You'd be no better off with them than you are with the one you have.

The corsair HX series is very solid. You can get a HX450 for $59.99 after rebate from many etailers.

The OcZ psu's are also solid in my experience.

I personally prefer PC Power and Cooling. Though they are roughly twice as expensive as other brands i simply feel better about spending the extra money. Back in the day i had a no name psu fry and almost burn my house down. Ive been paranoid ever since.

My point is there is absolutely NO reason to buy some no name brand psu because its $20 cheaper than something else. You would be amazed at what you get for that extra 20 bucks.

EDIT : And i totally made that first part ryhme by accident:D

Thanks a lot Mr. Alter_Ego, hacker and Honus for the help. Greatly appreciated. ;)
