It's pretty creepy at parts. It's mostly about well placed suspense. It's a much better form of horror than say.. Doom 3.

It's scary...

I mean the first time around (+ all the other times you play and the AI catches you by surprise around a corner for example and you end up jumping out of your seat.) ;) But just like any other horror movie (in this case an fps), when you play it to death it's no longer as scary as the first time, unless you never played the demo first time F.E.A.R. players are in for a treat. I thought the scares in this game we not "cheap scares" at all, tasteful and placed just right...  I couldn't say the same about the expansion pack though.  Plus mostly if you place this game in the dark, surround sound bumping then you will definitely get scared. IMO F.E.A.R. is an A+ singleplayer fps game, MP ain't that bad either. Too much fun to just play once, heck who doesn't like blowing up a grenade mid-air while in slo-mo and shooting it just as it's between the enemies. Multi-kill ! LOL !!

I don't really like playing scary games, but FEAR's horror was quite enjoyable really.  It's nothing cheap like Doom or Quake, more like suspension like The Excorsism of Emily Rose and Sixth Sense (except for one part maybe).

The places with suspension are more like placeholders between your fights with the soldiers.

FEAR is 99% straight action/FPS.... 1% horror.   To be completly honest...I didn't buy FEAR at launch because little girls freak me the *F* out.... I figured I would never have the courage to ever finish the game.    Once I finally picked it up, I quickly found out the horror aspect didn't last very long.    It has a few *boo* moments, but the vast majority of the game is just all about being a great FPS.    Personally I think Doom 3 was 10X more scary (Before it got WAY too repetitive.

I'd agree with SuperBeast (though I'd make it at 92% straight action FPS).  Personally, I got a little annoyed at the developer's attempts to be "scary"). Annoying and it didn't make any sense.

The bear crawling girl at times made me jump and a few other things..  But its imo not ment to be scary, its just suppose to be a moody tense atmosphere with the psychological dread at each corner yet nothing leaps out.  I found this to be more enjoyable not to mention way more realistic in the sense of feeling, Doom 3 got old and dumb.

The only game to instill both that dread feeling as well as jumps that are unpredictable that I played was Aliens Vs Predator 1+2, mainly the marines mission..

IN AVP 1 the first marine mission was classic, a slow walk through a dreadful enviroment with sirens and such..  One of the scariest levels I ever played, funiest part of it too was the fact there was ONLY ONE REGULAR bad guy in the level...   it is the most memorable..

I heard System Shock 2 was scary, but sadely I have yet to play the game, and I have yet to download it.

FEAR's story reminded me of someone who liked The Ring and Final Fantasy VII a little too much and decided to make a FPS out of a mix of the stories. After watching hundreds of horror movies and getting good at guessing movie twists... this game didn't do much for me storywise. It just seemed it was full of cheap flashback scares

FEAR was decently scary. It's almost an FPS version of The Ring, really.

Spoiler:

The one part that still creeps me the f*** out is when your character is climbing up the ladder and then turns around and that scary little girl is there. The first time that happened to me, I almost fell out of my chair.

The game certainly had a creepy tone which led to an excellent atmosphere, but I wasn't scared in any way.  It only fueled my passion for how great the game is.  However towards the end of FEAR and Extraction Point as well the games did creep me out a bit when being attacked by the ghostly apparitions.

It's definetly got the Japanese horror moments, but story wise, it's much outside of the J-horror lineup.  Play Extraction Point and it gets even more out of control, and by the end the situation is going beyond imagination.

Scary for the first hour or so, but after that you really don't--at least I didn't--care about the whole scary aspect of the game anymore.

fear is a relative emotion, everyone experiences it differently - and everyone experiences f.e.a.r differently

i found it utterly pathetic as a "scary" game - generally speaking, the only "horror" is alma, and she pretty much just pops out in fairly predictable ways... i don't find flash boo images frightening, they just make me jump - and that's the most tired and derivative and bad horror technique there is - it has nothing to do with the emotion fear at all

the only good thing the game does is have most objects generate sound on touch - brush against a phone or a bag of rubbish and it will make a noise, and coupled with surroundsound, it does a pretty good job of making you jerk and check behind you all the time... but even that is easy to get used to

if i had to give it a number /10, i'd say 3 or 4 being generous

To be honest, I never found it very scary at all. The intense firefights were what made it a great game to play for me. It looks good too, though that isn't important.
The scariest games I have played are the 2 Aliens vs Predator games.

ITS ALITTLE SCARY WHEN YOU SEE SOMETHING OUT OF THE CORNER OF YOUR EYE OR WHEN YOUR CLIMBING A LADDER AND THERES A LITTLE GIRL WAITING FOR YOU AT THE TOP,OR WHEN YOUR CRAWLING THROUGH A VENT AND SOMETHING CRAWLS AT YOU.THAT HAPPENS ONLY A COUPLE OF TIMES.THE REST IS GOOD OLD FPS.ALSO WHEN THAT ROBOT THING JUMPS THROUGH THE WALL...THAT WAS KINDA COOL/SCARY...IT MADE ME JUMP.

It was for me the most creepiest game I've ever played it didn't scare me it just creeped me out at times especially with Alma popping out of nowhere and Paxton Fettel talking. But then again STALKER has an eerie feel in general. (I know getting of the topic).

My heart was in my throat a number of times!  FEAR was great.  The atmosphere was the initial scary part, once I got over that it was the creepy girl, once I got over THAT there were some other parts that were just nuts.  I don't want to say for spoiler purposes, but I'm sure everyone who's played knows what I'm talking about.

If it's not scaring some people, I hope they weren't playing the game with cheats or anything, because that totally ruins everything.

fear was very scary... comming from a guy who hates horror movies.

well freddy versus jason had me laughing but I dont like horror usually...

I loved Fear. It was scary in a good way. Doom was too much, I didnt even bother finishing the game. I dont like games that rely on darkness to scare. Fear would have been scary in bright day light.

This game was amaizing as a FPS, as a scary story, as a entertainment.

Umm...er...it's a video game.  I try to reserve being scared for things like seeing a shark while swimming, or being bitten by a rattlesnake.  Or maybe even finding out the girl I went out with last night has syphillis.  The game was certainly well done, but I'm gonna have a hard time calling it "scary".

It's not like Doom 3 scary where everything is dark all the time. It's kind of like a psychological thriller. Weird stuff happens and it can get pretty creepy.

Played the game with the system in my sig at night in pitch black darkness and it didn't scare me at all.  Doom 3 to me was much more creepy than FEAR.

Although it's got some scares but nothing to have your heart in your mouth. That's mainly because environment & presentation of the game plays a big part in creating scares & I must say the worst part of FEAR is its level design. I was bored to death going through empty office after empty office. Like some have said, Doom 3 is much scarier than FEAR & there are many games scarier than FEAR.

Not that scary for a game that focuses on horror elements. It has a few scary moments, and sometimes the suspense will give you goosebumps, but apart from some cheap scare moments I was never really frightened.

I dont normaly get scared of games or movies id say most men dont. But if you were to ask the question did FEAR make you jump? Then if think alot of us would say yes. It made me jump when the lights went out come back on that little freaky girl is running at you on her arms and legs. Yep still remember that cause i needed to put on some new pants before i carried on.

It all depends in your room enviroment. If your in a dark room where only your PC moniter emits the light and you have headphones that won't let any sound from the outside intefere, you will find it scary.
