It's scary...
I mean the first time around (+ all the other times you play and the AI catches you by surprise around a corner for example and you end up jumping out of your seat.) ;) But just like any other horror movie (in this case an fps), when you play it to death it's no longer as scary as the first time, unless you never played the demo first time F.E.A.R. players are in for a treat. I thought the scares in this game we not "cheap scares" at all, tasteful and placed just right... I couldn't say the same about the expansion pack though. Plus mostly if you place this game in the dark, surround sound bumping then you will definitely get scared. IMO F.E.A.R. is an A+ singleplayer fps game, MP ain't that bad either. Too much fun to just play once, heck who doesn't like blowing up a grenade mid-air while in slo-mo and shooting it just as it's between the enemies. Multi-kill ! LOL !!
I don't really like playing scary games, but FEAR's horror was quite enjoyable really. It's nothing cheap like Doom or Quake, more like suspension like The Excorsism of Emily Rose and Sixth Sense (except for one part maybe).
The places with suspension are more like placeholders between your fights with the soldiers.
The bear crawling girl at times made me jump and a few other things.. But its imo not ment to be scary, its just suppose to be a moody tense atmosphere with the psychological dread at each corner yet nothing leaps out. I found this to be more enjoyable not to mention way more realistic in the sense of feeling, Doom 3 got old and dumb.
The only game to instill both that dread feeling as well as jumps that are unpredictable that I played was Aliens Vs Predator 1+2, mainly the marines mission..
IN AVP 1 the first marine mission was classic, a slow walk through a dreadful enviroment with sirens and such.. One of the scariest levels I ever played, funiest part of it too was the fact there was ONLY ONE REGULAR bad guy in the level...  it is the most memorable..Â
I heard System Shock 2 was scary, but sadely I have yet to play the game, and I have yet to download it.
FEAR was decently scary. It's almost an FPS version of The Ring, really.
Â
Spoiler:
The one part that still creeps me the f*** out is when your character is climbing up the ladder and then turns around and that scary little girl is there. The first time that happened to me, I almost fell out of my chair.Â
FEAR's story reminded me of someone who liked The Ring and Final Fantasy VII a little too much and decided to make a FPS out of a mix of the stories. After watching hundreds of horror movies and getting good at guessing movie twists... this game didn't do much for me storywise. It just seemed it was full of cheap flashback scaressmerlus
It's definetly got the Japanese horror moments, but story wise, it's much outside of the J-horror lineup. Play Extraction Point and it gets even more out of control, and by the end the situation is going beyond imagination.Â
fear is a relative emotion, everyone experiences it differently - and everyone experiences f.e.a.r differently
i found it utterly pathetic as a "scary" game - generally speaking, the only "horror" is alma, and she pretty much just pops out in fairly predictable ways... i don't find flash boo images frightening, they just make me jump - and that's the most tired and derivative and bad horror technique there is - it has nothing to do with the emotion fear at all
the only good thing the game does is have most objects generate sound on touch - brush against a phone or a bag of rubbish and it will make a noise, and coupled with surroundsound, it does a pretty good job of making you jerk and check behind you all the time... but even that is easy to get used to
if i had to give it a number /10, i'd say 3 or 4 being generous
My heart was in my throat a number of times! FEAR was great. The atmosphere was the initial scary part, once I got over that it was the creepy girl, once I got over THAT there were some other parts that were just nuts. I don't want to say for spoiler purposes, but I'm sure everyone who's played knows what I'm talking about.
If it's not scaring some people, I hope they weren't playing the game with cheats or anything, because that totally ruins everything.
fear was very scary... comming from a guy who hates horror movies.
Â
well freddy versus jason had me laughing but I dont like horror usually...
Â
I loved Fear. It was scary in a good way. Doom was too much, I didnt even bother finishing the game. I dont like games that rely on darkness to scare. Fear would have been scary in bright day light.
Â
This game was amaizing as a FPS, as a scary story, as a entertainment.Â
I dont normaly get scared of games or movies id say most men dont. But if you were to ask the question did FEAR make you jump? Then if think alot of us would say yes. It made me jump when the lights went out come back on that little freaky girl is running at you on her arms and legs. Yep still remember that cause i needed to put on some new pants before i carried on.
