So I bought a Coolermaster hyper 212 a couple days ago and got around to installing it tonight and man am I pleased! With the stock cooler I idled at around 55-60°C and now after installing the hyper 212 I idle at around 23-24°C. Amazing!! Think im going to try and overclock to 4Ghz... any tips?

EDIT: Anyone have any good Overclocking tutorials?

I know that I was just checking to see if anyone who is into overclocking knows of a good tut, so I do it properly.

Don't worry about it man its a breeze to install. I thought I was going to have a bit of trouble installing it since the stock cooler I put in was extremely difficult to get on, but installing the hyper 212+ was super easy. Would definetely recommend it as it dramatically dropped my temps. Plus they're only $20 so might as well try.

Depends on your case. You have to install the backplate which in my case meant removing the motherboard.

Until a certain point OC'ing a phenom II is quite straight forward . Just go into bios and raise the cpu multiplier Most phenom II's on air can hit 3,8-,3,9ghz without voltage tweaking ( though some will only get to 3,6ghz while a few lucky ones can even do 4-4,1ghz ) Just oc in small steps until you find a stable OC. Start off with 3,6ghz which is quite achievable and then go 100mhz increments until 3,9ghz and if you feel lucky try 4,0ghz ( though you will most likely need to increase cpu voltage to go over 3,9 )

Yeah, I think I have to do that for mine. I may get around to it as I've heard great things and my CPU does take a beating on certain games.

Intel Core 2 Quad QX9770 4.0GHz @1.375V (well over 135W TDP!), using MX-4 and Hyper 212 push-pull. Rock-solid.

Most 965 owners will hit the wall at 3.8GHz. Maybe you'll get 4.0GHz. But imho, 3.8GHz 24/7 is ideal for this CPU.

Have you tried going higher? I'm trying to get the Evo cooler for around £20 but the cheapest is like £28 or £30 with an extra CM fan for it. I'm going to be aiming for 4GHz though and I'm sure I'll need close to 1.4v to get it stable.

Ive gone to 3.6 but the voltage jump from 3.4 was quite high to get it stable, i would imagine you would need 1.4v for 4ghz.

Edit: Having alook at some guides atm, seems like some people have hit 4.0 with 1.35v, this woulnt be the case for me tho.

Yea with my HAF 932 I had to remove the motherboard to get at the backplate, but its really not a challenge, just a little time consuming.

Really? I can hit 3.6 without voltage tweaking, but after that I crash in about 15mins running prime95. I really want to hit 4.0ghZ, but im kinda scared to increase the voltage.

cpu voltage

Which Voltage would I increase?

why does my h100 idle at 25C -27C :( but then goes up to 58c-62c on load, thought watercooling was supposed to be good. Maybe i've overclocked too much but i dont care haha

How is that even remotely hot?

I have a 212+ tc, it's okay.
98c on load, 1.5 volts on my 2600k.

98c on load? What is your clock speed btw? Seriously 98c is ridiculously hot your cpu won't last very long at that temp, im sure the max recommended temp is 70C

4.6ghz, but my 2600k hits a brick wall at 4.4ghz.

If I go past that, I need a lot of voltage.

98c is only during intel burn test and prime95 small FFT. It's not a real issue(blender render max temp 70c, video encoding 78c)

I kind of want a h80i, but I rather just spend the money on a sierra 313u for my laptop.

I'd get an actual WC setup since h80i is kid stuff, but I move my computer too much.
