I just got around to playing The Witcher today. Some thoughts:

1. The combat is pretty weak. It's "select style", click, click, click. And the combat animations feel twitchy and incomplete. It's not quite true RPG gameplay, yet it doesn't feel like you are quite in control of your character either.

2. I like all the characters, particularly Triss.

3. The beginning cinematic is pretty awesome, especially showing off combat that doesn't seem as visceral in-game.

4. The graphics are pretty solid and the game runs well on my 8800GT.

5. The music is great. It's even better than Dragon Age's soundtrack.

I'm about an hour into the game so far, and while I do like it, I still find myself preferring Dragon Age. Maybe it's because Dragon Age feels a little more replayable and dynamic?

Anyways, I'm tired, I need to study for a test next week, and I spent a little more time than I should playing video games.

Kind of pointless to already start comparing a game to Dragon Age when you are only an hour in. Personally I feel the combat was excellent especially if you up the difficulty and require alchemy to get by.

What other medieval-esque fantasy game have I played recently? Oh yeah, Dragon Age.

Sometimes comparisons are hard to ignore.

The combat gets better as you have to switch stances against certain enemies and choose different swords as well I think. I have heard you were also playing Lord of the Realms III. It is time to let go! Its an old game! Put her back on the shelf and enjoy the wholesome goodness of "The Witcher", its gratuitous nudity and all!

It's really a love it or hate it game, sometimes people can't get over the strange dialogue, weird animations, combat system or bugs. Really though, if you look past the roughness of it all there is a truly unique and great game to behold.

Glad your enjoying the game though.

Yeah, combat was the turn off for me. It was good and great at the start, but got old pretty quickly.... I wish I had finished it though...

The thing I enjoyed most about the Witcher was the hundreds of subtle comic easter-eggs, there's a thread on the official Witcher site where people have listed the ones they have found, the thread is on it's 59th page.

Stick with it. The game is amazing. Its storyline and characters, the choices you'll have to make will far surpass Dragon Age. As for the combat system, up your difficulty level to the hardest level (requiring alchemy)and try to makefighting fun by carrying over your moves from one opponent to the next and combining the uses of Aard and Igni. A trackball I found is much better than a mouse in making the combat system better. As for the soundtrack...where you are is but the tip of the iceberg. The same can be said of everything else. If you're not playing the Enhanced Edition get it via file planet. You'll not be sorry.

The Witcher is a game that gets better the further you play it. I didn't enjoy my first hour with it at all. And that guy who said it's a "love it or hate it" game isn't right. I didn't love the game, but I can respect it for being one of the best RPGs in the past decade. Some of my personal preferences didn't really clash with some of the gameplay elements. (So when I say a game is bad, I truly believe that the game lacks any redeemable qualities - I know quality when I see it. The Witcher has quality in spades.)

I just started the game as well. So far it's been quite good. I am not a big fan of the combat though, but I am enjoying the story.

I felt the game started a bit slow, the fact that you're enjoying it now is a good sign though, because the game gets a lot more interesting very quickly. Dragon Age has a lot more depth in its gameplay but The Witcher beats it in story, characters and just general atmosphere. The combat gets more interesting as you level up, towards the end of the game you can perform some pretty sweet combos.

The witcher's strong point is the story and how you can have a affect in how it pans out. Something bioware have been touting about since mass effect, but not nearly on the same scale.

Beginning of the game is kinda bad imo. Game destroys Dragon Age though.

I don't think you would be singing the same tune had you played the game when it was released. It's easy to place judgement on a game that has been out for a long time. Consider all the games you've been playing since that time until today, and all the previews you've seen of upcoming games. The Witcher to me still plays wonderfully well, although it has some bugs, it's still stellar. The combat does get better, but the story and characters is where it shines.
