hey, my current PC spec is, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2.6Ghz, 1gb RAM and 7600gt. Im hoping to upgrade it soon to 2gb RAM and an 8600gt and im just wondering if the upgrade is really worth it? I used to hear alot of good things about the 8600gt but lately (since crysis demo release) reports on the card havent been so great, so is it worth upgrading to? if not any other cards that would be better (note i dont want to spend hundreds on a card) thanks in advance.

if you have a 7600 you wont notice a difference. it'd be like a 7600 upgrading toa 7800 or 7900in terms of performance almost. just save your money for an 8800GT

If anything, add that extra gig of ram.

If your motherboad doesn't support the DDR2 800 ram or greater, I would upgrade to a motherboad that does and replace all the ram with the fastest ram. Motherboads and ram are cheap.

why ram speed doesn't really affect gaming at all unless your overclocking going from ddr2 400 to ddr2 800 isn't going to increase your performance why waste money on a new motherboard ????

That's not completely true. Right now he doesn't have enough ram so depending on the game, there will be less disk swapping and if you're going to add ram, might as well do it right. Also, games that are heave with physics, shadows and AI will improve based on the speed of your ram and CPU. And if you want to overclock and squeese out an additional 300 to 500 mhz, why not?

I'd add the ram now and get a 8800 GT when you can.

Well I see that the 8800gt costs around £150 which is just a tad steep for me, does anyone know how long it will take for the price to drop? and if so by how much?

Dont get the 8600 gt, that aint no kind of upgrade whatsoever. By a 8800gt for christmas or something. The 8600's are dog poo for anyone already owninga 7600, 7800 or 7900.

Just as a side note, i went from a new 7600 to a second hand 7900 off ebay. That was a big jump. Was a super-duper evga one though, plus im ragging it with a big overclock. I'd go ebay and look for a cheap high end card from a reputable seller.

My 2 cents (about 4 mighty english pence)
