You mean you have problems with WASD? Do what I do, let your index finger rest on D, your middle finger on W and your ring finger on A. Use your middle finger to jump between W and S (forward and backward). This way you can use your pinky for crouch (or whatever tab, shift and ctrl are), your thumb to jump (space) and your index finger to reload (R) or activate things (E or F).
It's really easy and intuitive once you get the hang of it. I had more problems adjusting to dual analog sticks back in the day.
1. Make sure your left and right keys are bound to strafe left and right, not turn left and right. Many games even today still have that bizzare and antiquated control scheme.
2. Generally configure your controls to something that works for you. Play around and experiment and you will just get used to what does and doesn't work for you.
This applies to your mouse, too. Fiddle with the sensitivity, try inverting your mouse (although the only people who use inverted mouse are creepy weirdos with no friends and they smell too).
The rest is as artur said.

They sure do! I just didn't want to overhwelm him with too much coolness all at once. I mean, if he's just suddenly getting into keyboard and mouse, that's like 10 cools right there. Using arrow keys has gotta be right off the coolometer. I don't know if anyone not used to a solid level of background coolness could stand so much exposure to such high coolness levels so quikcly.
I have heard of a gamer in Canada who was cooled to death. We can't take risks with our children. They're the future.

Movement. As opposed to WASD or ESDF.
Both JP and I seem to use arrow keys, and we pretty much seem to be the only people on the planet who do so - or who'll admit to it, anyway. Doom is literally the only FPS I played (on PC) from 1994 until Quake 2 in 1999, and I used arrow keys the whole time, so there was no going for me from there.
The only game I've ever had control issues with using arrow keys was JK2, since you've got all those damn force powers and I got slaughtered online. But for everything else, I'm golden with arrow keys.
You guys are weird. What the hell do you press when you have to do something other than move? + all the F(n)-buttons are waaay up there. And weapons (1,2,3 and so forth). I just don't get why you like to torture yourselves.artur79
Up arrow - forwards
Down arrow - backwards
Left arrow - strafe left
Right arrow - strafe right
Right control - crouch
Right shift - reload
Enter - use
Keypad 0/Delete/End/Page down - function keys like sprint, grenade, etc
LMB - shoot
RMB - jump
Wheel - weapons/zoom
Wheel click - ironsights
Mouse sidebutton 1 - torch
Mouse sidebutton 2 - function key (I have a Copperhead, it has five usable buttons)
/ - lean left
Numberpad 1 - lean right
Now, I will happily admit that WASD is more versatile, since you do have access to more keys, but I have stupid fingers and I just can't work with all those keys everywhere. Arrow keys give me a pleasant minimalism, and while the above may seem bizzare to anyone who's never tried it, it works. It works well.

It's not hard to reach over to the number keys quickly if needed, but I usually rely on the mouse wheel, anyway. I can switch nearly instantly like that without undershooting or overshooting it, most of the time. F-keys don't need to be accessed quickly, in my experience.
I agree with Shodan, JK2 was a bit of a tough one, but only at first for me. I eventually hotkeyed all the important force powers that I'd need to be able to use right away to various numpad keys. I've not played a FPS yet where I had too few keys near the arrow keys to map pretty much everything near my hand. And lastly, with arrow keys I've got room in between the movement keys and other function keys so I don't accidentally press anything when I'm moving frantically in a game, not to mention all the keys are arranged in a very orderly, square fashion so it's extremely easy to remember what button does what by feeling it. Letter keys are all mish-mashed together, like a sea of nameless, identical keys squished against each other, so I'm always pushing the wrong keys.

Those are pretty good keys, but if you want to go with the c l a s s i c (gamespot censors it) layout, shift is walk/ run toggle, rt control is reload (or wheelclick for modern systems) rtclick is alt fire, numpad 0 is jump and numpad . is crouch. Del and pgdwn are generally used for leaning, and if you dont have a fancy mouse, numpad 1 is generally good for light

Interesting. I do the same for arrow keys, left-click, and mouse wheel; the rest is:
right control - sprint, or walk for the few games that only have running and walking
spacebar - use (another way in which I'm old-school, that's been the button for "using" doors for me since Wolfenstein)
right-click - iron sights in most games, alt fire in some others, jump in a lot of older shooters that use the mouse, flashlight in Doom 3
numpad 0 - jump
numpad 1 - crouch for games without prone, prone for games with it
numpad 4 - crouch for games with prone, miscellaneous function key for games without (it's my "use force power" button in JK2)
page down - lean right
end - lean left
delete - miscellaneous function key, works really well for instantaneous use of Battelfield 2 and 2142's com system or switching between suit functions in Crysis
enter - throw grenade, or miscellaneous key
shift - walk for games like NOLF, switch fire mode for games like Far Cry, miscellaneous
insert, home, page up - all miscellaneous, filler keys
L - flashlight
R - reload (yeah, yeah, I know, it's impractical, but it's never hindered me in competitive games like Battlefield... I should change it anyway, but, egh)
Lots of other keys are miscellaneous ones that I don't use often in most games, like the rest of the numpad, the punctuation keys.

It sure does. But that's the beauty of KB + mouse, I guess. Any freak can play a game in any freakish way he wants.
You freaks.

That's what the old people always call us cool folks.
That's interesting JP, both you and brandp32 just mentioned a walk key. I've never used walk. I always use crouch or, if it works okay, ironsights in lieu of walk (since you walk slow with all three, and ironsights rarely harms peripheral vision much) and it saves me a wasted key.
Another one I didn't mention, I use right alt as prone, but I can't think of many games where I actually use prone that aren't on a crouch/prone/stand toggle on one key.

That's what the old people always call us cool folks.
Young men think old men are fools, but old men know young men are fools.
Take that, you young man, you.
It's just so painful to watch Keyboard turning from other players espically in World of Warcraft.
To the op in no later then a year or more you should be comfortable with the control scheme of KB and M. Just enjoy your gaming on PC and have a great time.
One of the big things noted is your keyboard & mouse being a factor. Not all keyboards and mice are built alike. Some maybe great for just typing in general, while others are really good for small hands / large hands, and other for specific type of gaming.
I use both the Logitech G15, and now primarily use the Razor Lycosa. Both are really nice to use. Bad thing is my G15 is freaking huge! Gaming mouse wise my primary weapon of choice is the Microsoft Sidewinder, and my backup is the Razor Diamondback G2. Both have been excellent mice and serve me quite well.
Now, if you are still continuing to have problems after some time, and some money to burn possible get a zboard , or the Ideazon MERC keyboard. The MERC already has a FPS layout, just the only problem I had with it like my G15 is its size, and my buddies MERC didn't have the backlit keys.
The ZBoard has removable keysets that fit over your Zboard for specific games and game types, but the problem I ran into was on the board I used the keys felt a bit loose, and for me a little under responsive. Also, the Zbord felt a little impractical, I just can't see people going out of their way to constantly change layouts from game to game, especially in a LAN party / event setting.

Up arrow - forwards
Down arrow - backwards
Left arrow - strafe left
Right arrow - strafe right
Right shift - jump
Right control - crouch
Slash (above enter) - reload
Slash (next to right shift) - sprint
Enter - use
Keypad/Delete/End/Page down/etc... - utility keys (map, weapons, quick access stuff, etc)
LMB - shoot
RMB - alt-fire/zoom
Wheel - weapons
Mouse has 5 buttons (Logitech G5 v2). I bind them depending on the game.
I tried WASD, but it seemed like a big clusterfuk to me. I kept tripping over keys, pressing wrong keys, etc...
Arrows and keypad FTW!!!
Now then, I understand where using a mouse is better then an analogue stick, but as far as movement goes, I just can never get used to it. Am I missing something, or do I just need to play more and get used to it? Mythbuster4everI think if you learn to type properly, that's a good start. Try a typing software. With practice you will get better. You have to get to the point where you don't need to look at the buttons and just feel where they are. Eventually you'll get it.

Our numbers swell! Mwahahah! Soon our armies shall spread forth and consume the lands!
Take your treasures and flee! Flee into the west! There is nothing left for you here. Nothing!
If you would take the time to get used to WASD, you'll figure out that with WASD you have a lot more keys within a very short reach.

Yeah, but the only game I've ever played where those extra keys were needed was Jedi Knight 2, for all for force powers. Every other game is absolutely fine with arrow keys. I'm never gonna be a professional gamer with arrow keys, but then again, I was never gonna be a professional gamer anyway.

I don't play CoD4, but if memory serves it has a crouch/prone toggle on one key and you use jump to stand. At least, you can set your keys up like that, which I believe I did.

For me it's not so much about the amount of buttons (it's definately a plus) but it's more about the easy access of the buttons, which is why I think WASD is so great.

To you it's easy access, to me it's just a lot of keys crammed together in a hodge-podge pattern. Like Shodan said, stupid fingers. Their close proximity to one another (combined with the facts that they're all the same shape and size; and they're not arranged in an orderly, grid fashion) is a bane for me, not a boon.
I'm using the arrow keys for movement since my very first FPS, if wasd or zqsd or something doesn't work for you try the arrows, still using almost every single key on my keyboard as a shortcut for CSS
a matter of preference and training to perfection ;)
also a mouse with the normal 2 buttons and wheel/button, and one or two buttons on the side is great for gamers, then I still have a small button on top which acts as a backspace in games in programs
