I currently have a socket 775 motherboard that I'm looking to upgrade the cpu. Would I notice the switch from my current E7400 to a Q9300? I'm asking because microcenter has it listed for cheap $139.00.

Any info would be helpful. I'm not really looking to spend much more right now. If the change in speed wouldn't be noticeable, then I just won't do it.

Do you render 3D, zip things 1hour evry day, play GTA4 alot or run four threads often? -If so, then yes. -If not, you won't really see any increase in performance. I wouldn't do such an upgrade, just wait until the 2.8ghz don't cut it, when it does not you can OC it until it does.

So do you think I should get a higher clock speed quad core when prices drop?

definitely, to be in the safe side, since not all apps/games utilize 4 cores.

Well, the s775 is on it's way out so the prices may never drop to what would be a good value upgrade. Save the cash, spend it on a new build when the one you got is insufficient. (witch is quite a while with the games coming out rigth now.) If you want a upgrade that you would see a big diffrence in you should mail game devs and ask them to put out more demanding games as your current rig should pass most games with flying colors.

Agreed ^^

I have a Q8200 2.33ghz , only because i multitask alot . i could be rendering a video , while uploading a video to youtube / listening to music / playing a game ..

Even then i dont think im the biggest multitasker around...

Save your money for a future upgrade wich you will have to change your mobo for a futureproof socket.

wrong, Intel is still interested in producing higher clocks and more efficient C2Ds and C2Qs.

I really appreciate all your help. I'm not that big of a multitasker yet. I mainly edit video for fun, and play occassional games. I haven't ever had framerate drops. I just have recently been irritated with the load times of mass effect 2, but I guess thats unavoidable.

Well I know that but even if the new Exxxx and the new Q does ends up in evry shelf at your local or intenet store you can still bet it's getting expencive as we havn't seen any diffrence under quite some time even with the i5/i7 out. So the price will remain, and (when he does need a upgrade, witch i already said is quite some time ahead.) a compleatly new build would be a better choice for him as he got a fairly fast s775 cpu. At the moment most games out there will prefer your dual core, so it might be best to wait until more games are using it and by then the price will have gone down anyway.

Keep the dual-core and overclock it if possible. If you get that CPU into the 3.2ghz+ range (should be easy), it will eat almost every game out there with no issue (if it isn't already). A lower-clocked quad core is not a good upgrade right now.
