Keyboard and mouse don't work during windows 7 installation

I noticed when trying to install windows 7 on an old hard drive that doing so is impossible, because when the setup screen appears, the mouse and keyboard shut down, and refuse to work. I'm wonding if this has to do with win7 itself, or is MS pulling shit behind the scenes to prevent people from installing 7 on new hardware? This seems to be a common issue.

I've had this issue for 2 different reasons before.

1. Bad mobo. Turns out the mobo was faulty.

2. Bad .iso. I was installing it from a USB and the iso was faulty. After a fresh download and copied to the usb it was fine.

I once had this issue. Probably not the issue but try moving to another USB port on the install screen.

Are you using usb? If using wireless or Bluetooth that more than likely won’t work.

I'd make sure that the keyboard and mouse are connected to a USB 2.0 rather than a 3.0. Some older and a few newer motherboards tend to get cranky over USB 3.0 before Windows has loaded correctly.

Oh yeah, mouse and KB are connected through USB 3.1, but none of the USB ports work during the setup screen.

That's why I keep around an old 1990's PS/2 keyboard just in case USB doesn't work. Once the basic Windows files have been installed, the USB starts working again.

Sadly, I no longer have any PS/2 stuff that I can find.

Go to a pawn shop. I always find ancient PCs/components there.

Plug your usb mouse and keyboard in the top two 2.0 ports by the PS/2 port.

Older Windows 7 images/discs do not have native usb 3.0/3.1 support.
