http://kotaku.com/5847778/for-all-its-airplanes-earthquakes-and-explosions-battlefield-3s-campaign-is-remarkably-dull

The comment that really irks me is that they say the single player is a tutorial for the MP component. This isn't the 90's anymore, single player should be its own separate mode designed for its own purpose.

I doubt ill be buying BF3 at launch. The beta has been really disappointing, and hearing stories that the single player isn't going to be all that great makes me sad.

I expect the campaign to get better, but I doubt it'll be the best FPS campaign though.

DICE is pulling a fast one on us like we saw with Kaos Studios' Homefront? Not surprising since tons of AAA titles are doing this nowadays. The issue is that all the big titles get overhyped and over marketed and it's worse for everyone because gaming is now a very social activity, people talk about it in real life sure, but also on Facebook, Youtube, and on forums so overmarketing and overhype is what's ruining so many FPS games which are already quite restricted in what's allowed, and this is sort of why I look to the third person shooter genre for games like Saints Row, Dead Rising, Just Cause, etc. I try to buy every single AAA title that comes out each year because I feel nearly all of them deserve my money, even if I don't play them much, BF3 is no different in this regard. It's just we're too exposed to too many games, and the gaming industry becoming far too monetized which has been noticeable since 2005.

Who buys a Battlefield game just for the singleplayer campaign?

I'm actually surprised that they put one in BF3 - the previous games (in the main series) didn't even have stories.

Planeforger

Who said anything about buying it exclusively for the single player?

Most games that have a major MP component to them, but they also have a great single player mode. I don't understand why battlefield should be excused from having SP just because it was mainly MP focused in the past. Also, I don't know if you have been paying attention these past few years, but dice has been making the Bad Company series. Both games shipped with single player campaigns and they were both pretty good. They obviously have proventhat they can make a decent single player portion, so why not make one for Battlefield 3?

You really can't ship a 60$ game these days unless it is a complete package.

I thought the BC2 campaign was crap so no surprises here then, I don't know why they waste time with these tacked on single player components if the game is heavily focused on multiplayer anyway (the same way I dislike multiplayer in games that didn't need it ie. DS2 or BS2).

Doesn't all of Kotaku wet themselves whenever CoD is mentioned?

I'll wait for a more reputable source to let us know how it is. Better yet, just wait a few more weeks and play it for myself.

It doesn't really matter, you know. The SP-campaign is supposed to be a tutorial/introduction to MP. Besides, Kotaku never got to use the jets.

I didn't touch the SP for BC2 and I won't touch it for BF3 either. Buy Bioshock if you want SP.

You lost me at "Kotaku". they are not very credible

Also lets see what they make of MW3's SP and if they find substance in that then you know something is fishy

Also they said :"The graphics are great, but with me in control, it generally felt much more like a standard military shooter and less like the "Oh my god this looks real!" So how it CONTROLS determines how realistic it LOOKS?

Honestly, for a Battlefield campaign that sounds...good. BF is mostly MP based, so having a story at all is actually surprising. Sure, it probably wont be as good as well, say cod? But that doesnt matter - Its BF.

Kotaku and Gametrailers are one in the same on this s***. GT never give full attention to PC versions of games because they just can't play them. Same with kotaku, since the 360/PS3 came along reviewers seem to be only able to use that controller and nothing else. He likens it too much to COD saying it lacks stuff, yet they give COD huge praise all the time.

seanmcloughlin

Kotaku has never been credible. They're nothing but a BLOG. But some people don't get that and take it as a professional article. They realise this and try to "nerd bait" you. Just to increase AD revenue and the people who write these incredibly stupid/illogical and inflamatory article's are most likely getting paid on a CPM basis. It's a damn shame that BLOG POST already has 30,000 views....

Well Gametrailers and Spike are bros and we know that Spike has a major hard on for CoD.

I also heard a rumor that Kotaku didn't even have a gaming PC in their office until a few weeks ago when Nvidia built them one and sent it to them. If that is true, I'll never pay attention to anythign they have to say again.

Always take reviews and previews with a grain of salt, it is basically that persons opinion on the game, just because he/she dont like it/think it's all that good, dosnt mean you wont like it.

What? Back in the 90s most FPS games were single player and the multiplayer component was an afterthought (arena shooters obviously being an exception). It wasn't really until this gen where the two switched and multiplayer became the focus and single player was an afterthought. So really, BF3 is just taking a cue from all the other current FPS games. On the other hand, the proper BF games never had single player to begin with IIRC so really even having a single player option is a step forward in the series. Just like arena shooters, you don't get a BF game for the single player.

I think the Battlefield series has always been about the multiplayer. If I was making it, the only single player would be multiplayer maps with AI bots. The single player doesn't sound all that bad though, probably around 8/10. If multiplayer turns out great, the game could get a solid 9/10.

I was hoping for a pretty decent one actually. If they decided on having one, might as well be worth playing. And I think it will be. Plenty of campaign footage around, looks great.

- BF2 had no real singleplayer mode to speak of if I recall correctly, other than playing the MP maps with bots - BC2 had an actual singleplayer campaign. Overall, the structure was very CoD-like. Pretty linear, with various rail shooting or vehicle section throw in for variety, plus one very awkward section with running from spot to spot to survive. I would still recommend that anyone who owns BC2 and has not even touched the SP campaign to play it through once for one reason - the acting. The various characters in the story are very well acted and make the campaign interesting, even if the campaign design itself is very average.

Screw B3. There's only so much of running around shooting ppl online over and over again that i can handle. I loved the epic non linear campaign of a game like Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis. Plus add the tools for player created stuff and great enemy AI, you have tons of great single player and co-op material. I just wish my pc actually ran it well.

Did you play the same campaign I did? Because the one I played had some of the worst characters I've ever seen or heard in a game. Especially the guy with the moustache, a more stereotypical redneck you could not get. They remind me of the crap characters from Killzone 2

I have BF3 preordered and played the open beta a bit, but honestly, I didn't find it very fun at all - hoping it is just because it is still Beta, but it was quite dull and lifeless. Having tonne of fun on BC2 though - that one is freakin' awesome.
