I think 1 is better. KOTOR 2's got more features and such, but it's also buggier (even after patch) and less polished. Get both if you want, but if you could only get one, then I would go for KOTOR 1.
KOTOR 1 is a way better, and more interesting game with an amazing story. KOTOR 2 feels broken, even though it improves very little over the original.
So, I suggest you get KOTOR 1, because its a better game, and if you start off with KOTOR 2, the story might a little confusing, for it has heavy references to the first game.
Kotor 1 is a lot better than 2, but if you've played Kotor 1 to the fullest and still want more, 2 has its set of problems, but still playable and enjoyable.
Start chronorogical. Start with 1st part. KoTOR1 is overall better than it's sequel. Sith Lords only superpass KoTOR1 in the storyline. It's much darker, much better.

Those references are however important, i mean Revan is a bad guy?
