I really don't need to, it's pretty damn obvious if you just play both games.

Well maybe he's asking which game to buy because he can only get one, and doesn't know which one's better.
However, loismustdie is right that it's pretty obvious. The 1st game is a far better experience, with a much richer and better told story, better characters, better planets - however I'm not going to say KOTOR 2 is a bad game, because it's not.
It's actually a very good game, and I'm not going to bash anyone who believes it's a better game than the 1st. It has it's moments, it's just unfortunate it was rushed to the point of game ending bugs, an incomplete ending, and a far less satisfying feel to the game. Having said that, KOTOR 2 does do quite a lot of things better than KOTOR 1, and it's worth a play through, especially if you're craving for more KOTOR. It really is worth it.
Yeah I had a much more enjoyable time playing the first game, it was just so well done and it truly felt like Star Wars. The music, the voice acting, the characters; it's no doubt the best Star Wars game I've played to this day. I've played through the first game like 4-5 times, it was just so fun to play as both evil and good then going back to do the stuff you missed the first or second time around.
Like other people have said though the second game is not horribly bad, but you could obviously tell it was rushed out to meet the holiday season. This is especially true with the good/evil endings. It makes me sad that parts of the story the developers were forced to cut out really would have made the game better than it was.
Kotor 1 was the best Star Wars game I have ever played! The story was very rich and the action starts right away because you are attacked by the Sith over Taris and then you get to escape killing alot of sith basturds along the way. The game is great andI have played thru it like 5 times itis truly one of the greatest games ever made.If you can get but one game wait until the friday of thanksgiving (black friday) and go to cirsuit city or best buy and find it on sale for 15 bucks if your lucky. God Bless you Bioware!
I own both and I tried the second one and the story is just so slow in the begining and doesn't make sense 'cause you aren't Reaven  And to top that off you have to play something like o 10 hours to get off the space station and another 20 hours to get thourgh the next place, for what reason?? And to make it all worse the game is very buggy, atleast for me at the snowy place the old female Jedi is hangin' and then because of the bugginess in other parts of the game I had to start over after something like 35 hours ....rrrrrrrrrrbloodyObsidion you ruined the Kotor series or atleast kotor 2
and tell why plz. skreetpreacha
Well I had a nice perspective of the series in how I played, I bought KOTOR 2 1st and beat it a number of times and thought, "This game is awsome!!!". BUt then I finally got around to playing KOTOR 1 when I purchased the Star Wars Best of PC pack......and yes, kotor 1 was the better experiance overall in both storyline and stability.
With that being said however, KOTOR 2 was by no means a bad game, it jsut could have used a little more time in the shop before being released.
Unlike 1carus and THGarret, I will say that 2 is a horrible game. Now, I could go on for several pages about the numerous reasons I think it's a horrible game, but for everybody's sake, I'll try to keep it as brief as possible. Just as a warning(so I don't have to say it later), there will be spoilers.
First off, the story is horrible. The writers pretty much wrote themselves into a corner, then took the easiest possible way out rather than actually come up with a clever way. It also presents a number of failings of reason that, as a huge Star Wars fan, I cannot accept. For some reason the 3 remaining Jedi Masters feel that the only way to resolve the situation is killing you, which is especially odd considering that the first game (along with everything else pertaining to Jedi) clearly states that "Jedi do not kill their prisoners, no matter what their crime." It doesn't matter, though, because before they get a chance to break the most important tenet of the Jedi Code, they all get wiped out in one shot by an old woman. Now, I don't know about you, but the idea of 3 Jedi Masters all being killed simultaneously by anything that isn't a catastrophic disaster that takes the surrounding area along with them is a little hard to swallow. There aren't many Sith Lords who could take down one Jedi Master that easily, let alone 3, and the fact that the Sith in question goes down so easily later in the game doesn't help matters.
That brings me to the issue of Kreia, who is in my opinion the worst character of all time. right from the beginning of the game she is forced on you, forming a force bond with you that gives you no other option than to keep a close eye on her to make sure she doesn't die. She then proceeds to spend the rest of the game telling you that you could stand to be a whole lot more evil. I'm sorry, but when a character is supposed to be neutral, they shouldn't tell me that I'm not causing enough suffering. I'm guessing that the revelation that she's really a sith Lord in disguise is supposed to be a big surprise, but I pretty much knew all along.
the rest of the characters aren't much better. Granted, I didn't spend the whole game wishing that I could ditch them somewhere, but I really didn't care about them at all. One thing that the first game had was likeable characters, characters that I actually cared about, whose storylines I actually wanted to learn. the characters in the second game are the exact opposite. Atton is just slightly annoying, barely witty enough to make me not hate him. Handmaiden is boring, and her relationship ultimately goes nowhere (Stop the Presses, we found out what her name is!). Visas is moderately interesting, and her looking at you with her own eyes is certainly a more significant and rewarding conclusion to her relationship storyline, but she never fully convinced me that she wasn't going to stab me in the back to please her master. T3 is exactly the same as he was in the first game, which is to say he's a trashcan that makes annoying beeping noises and gives you computer spikes. Canderous (now Mandalore) lost all his swagger, leaving an empty shell of the awesome character he once was. HK-47 is the worst offense. Rather than the hilariously violent, oddly loveable character from the first game, you get a mean-spirited one that pretty much tells you that he's going to kill you the first chance he ges if it will help him in any way. they managed to suck the soul from one of th greatest party members in RPG history. G0-T0 is a miniture, robotic Kreia; you hate him, but you can't get rid of him. at least you can ignore him...
The reason the characters are so soulless is the only significant newgameplay mechanic: The Influence system. The Influence system allows you to tell people what to do, no matter what their previously stated morals are, as long as you talk to them enough. What this means is that you have a party full of wishy-washy characters who wil willfully abandon their beliefs and do whatever you tell them. That would be like Jolee Bindo joining the Sith just because you had listened to his life story, it just doesn't make sense. I liked the fact that I knew where every character in my party stood on issues in the first game. Obsidian took that away in the second.
Finally, because I've already rambled more than I wanted to, the Planets suck. Half are just rehashed versions of planets from the first game, and the other half are just poorly designed and boring. The only one I actually enjoyed was Nar Shadaa, but that's mainly because I kept reminiscing about the fun I've had playing throughlevels on Nar Shadaa in the Jedi Knight games. Peragus, the opening area, is probably the worst single level of all time as well. Its long, its boring, its annoying. There is not a single redeeming quality at all.
Ultimately, they took KotOR 1, didn't fix any bugs, added a few bugs of their own, added a slew of broken quests, and completely sucked the soul out of an amazing game. I say that alot of tings about this game are the worst of all time in their respective fields, and I'm not exaggerating for effect.
To whoever linked the KOTOR 2 restoration project: So are they just finding old sound clips, putting them together and such, and creating scenes that were orginally cut from the game? I've listened to a couple of them, some of them sounded like cutscenes during Atton's *Spoilers* Jedi killing days. Its interesting. I might want to check it out some more later. Would be cool to see KOTOR2 for what it was meant to be.
I think Kotor II is much more enjoyable despite the bugs. I guess it's not a better game but I still prefer it. The roleplaying elements of it are much better IMO. I have a hard time playing Kotor I now because the environments and characters and everything seems really dull compared to the sequel :/
Mediocre_man: you're free not to like the sequel but most of your arguments were extremely opiniated :/ almost like one of those rants where someone hates on a good game and calls every feature of it bad for example "Oh I really hate HL2, the game is so linear it feels like it's on a rail, the weapons are really weak so shooting people isn't fun, the AI is crap compared to HL1, the vehicle sections are too long, they drag on forever, the ending is so anti-climatic etc.". You can talk like that about any game, but it just feels like hating. If you're going to describe why a game is bad try to be more factual. Just my 2 cents, don't get mad.
KOTOR1 is unique
KOTOR2 is a run of the mill RPG game. The battles get very repetitive and boring after a while. It fails to maintain the samemomentum that KOTOR1 does, and the fact that you spend much more time battling enemies instead of dialoguing is a flaw.
Honestly, both KOTOR's combat system is fun, but its deff not the core of the game, its the amazing dialogue and the way the game unravels based on your desicions. KOTOR2 switched the focus on battling instead of talking.
2 is a great game nontheless.
Kyrieee: I was being as factual as possible. The only parts of my critique that were based in opinion were the characters and planets, which are topics that pretty much always deal with opinion. Everything else is grounded in fact; The story makes no sense in context of everything else Star Wars related, Kreia tells you to be more evil all the time (not directly, but she constantly told me that I needed to stop being helpful and start doing things that would get me dark side points), The influence system does make the characters wishy-washy, the game has more bugs than the already-buggy KotOR 1, there are a bunch of broken quests, etc. Also, the vast majority of people on these boards agree with me about the characters and planets, so I think that there might be something to my complaints.
The people who say that Half-Life 2 sucks say so because they aren't fans of that type of game. They expect an action-packed run and gun shoter, and end up with a brilliant, varied game that mixes up shooting segments that are designed to make you feel weaker than your enemies with puzzles that actually make you think. They think the game is bad, but really it's just not their thing. Just about everyone who responds tells them that they are just stating opinion as fact, and explains that they are wrong. I list real problems that the game has. I love RPG's, and I love the first one, but this game just isn't good. Another difference is that there a whole lot more people who agree with me than there are that disagree.
I'm pretty sure I've seen this conversation about a million times already, but whatever.
KoTOR presents a more cohesive and polished experience, it has a definite "Star Wars feel" which can be both a good and bad thing. Surely you wont be asking yourself "is this a Star Wars game?", but you might also be asking yourself, "Couldn't they have been a little more creative?"
KoTOR2, on the other hand, has some great qualities about it including better characterization and dialogue, but is mired with bugs and an unfinished story courtesy of Lucasarts.
In the end, I don't like choosing between the two. They were both great games and to choose one over the other seems like a slight to the other game.
first let me say i enjoyed em both, perhaps the best money ive ever spent on a game. but im one of the ones that despite its obvious flaws, enjoyed the second one more. it was a much more mature storyline than the first one in my opinion. you had to actualy think about your decisions for a while, they werent quite so black and white obvious as in the first game, and i REALLY enjoyed the development of your toon alot more. the choices for upgrading both equipment and the toon itself were alot more in depth than the first one.
ill say this, if they had actualy finished the second one , it would be my all time hands down favorite game. by the same token if the first one had all the toon development options as the second one, THAT one would take the top slot. as it is the second one gets the edge for me, but only by a wisker. its really too close to call and id recomend getting them both if at all possable. and id also add that even the second one in its 'unfinshed' state is STILL better than 99% of the crap youd play in other series and every bit as good as the first one, just ....... different.
