I've played the first one and I thought it was brilliant. I am thinking of getting the sequel and was wondering if it's as good. Does it keep the things that made kotor good? And what things does it add?

Thanks in advance.

when i played the first kotor i was so impressed and awed i couldnt wait for a sequel. so when kotor 2 came out i immediately ran out to buy it. upon playing it once i got home i noticed that a lot of customization options were added which made the character leveling more intricate than the first game. this however, im my opinion, could not make up for the lack of that special something that the first game had. dont get me wrong... kotor 2 is a great game that should not be missed if you are a fan of the first game. i just feel it did not live up to the standard of the first game which was so revolutionary and different from anything that came out before it. so all in all.. you'll enjoy it but not as much as the first

It's better.

The gameplay is more or less the same but here are a couple of things that make it better:

- influence systen: you can gain or lose influence with your party members depending on your actions in certain situations. for example if you do something evil around a good character, you'll lose influence with that character. this makes interaction with the party members a lot more realistic compared to the mechanical "Speak to X character again upon gaining another level" system found in the first KOTOR.

- better story. Even though the game was clearly rushed and unfinished, the story is still a lot better than the fairly generic (but still great) story from the first KOTOR

EDIT: On the downside, the game, as already mentioned, feels very unfinished in a lot of aspects such as the story and the characters. And the game is even more easier than the first KOTOR, which was already incredibly easy to begin with.

The second one wasn't as good as the first but still a great game. I got it when it first came out so it was pretty buggy but by now most of the problems should be fixed. Also, the second one was extremely easy so if you do get it play on the hard difficulty.

very good game. again, not as good as first, and a little on the short side, but more customization, and the influence system rocks. very good game for your dollar. plenty of replay value.

NO it wasnt as good.

It was rushed, and very buggy, and the story was quite confusing, just generally wasnt finished befrore it was reliesed, but if u enjoyed the first, its a still a must.

K, thanks for everyone's advice. The infulence system sounds good and more of the same can't be a bad thing. I'll probably be getting it soon...

It wasnt as good as the first one but I would say that it was mainly due to how buggy it was (and the beginning at the peragus mining facility is very boring after the first time).

Having said that though it is a good game in its own right, a different story to the first one which was a good thing as I didnt want the same type of story again. It was darker to some extent which I enjoyed, and I like the idea of the influence system (though it could of been implemented a bit better).

The main point though is that if you like the first one and can look past the bugs, you should enjoy it.

I think Kotor 2 had far more interesting characters and places.  The only bad thing is that the game is unfinished.  You can only really start noticing that its not finished near the end.  But lucky for us theres a team of people fixing the game.  They are putting back all the unifinished content that didnt make it into the game when it was released.  Here is the website:  http://www.team-gizka.org/

Its very close to completion and when its released it will make the game even better.

What kind of bugs are there, do they ruin the game at all? Or are they just small things?

There are only a couple of minor bugs, but nothing that ruin the game.  You can download most of the bug fixes that weren't in the patch, from here.  http://www.team-gizka.org/downloads.html

Well worth the purchase if you liked the first one.

Just don't have as high expectations and be aware that this game was rushed out the door relatively incomplete.

i absolutely love both of them, they are two of my fav games of the last 5 years or so, maybe the top two. Ones story could not be beat, it was just the best. Two's gameplay was a little better and the menus were done better, and of cours some gfx updates. But if you played one and liked it, you must play 2!

My favorite part of the first game was the deep decisions you had to made, and the nature of good and evil and such in the Sith and Jedi thingy.. So I thought the first was much, much better because it had some amazing storyline portions, and I enjoyed a lot of the moral type dilemnas- the only ones in number 2 seem to be the same ones brought from number 1.. But besides that, pretty similar

Yeah the second KOTOR was kinda crap.  The first planet was so incredibly boring I almost stopped playing the game just because of that.  But I continued on and it got slightly better.  The story really kinda sucked and the graphics were even worse than the first game.  And the worst thing about all of it was the horrible dull characters you were forced to team along with.  OMG!  Where they cookie cut outs or what?  The first game made it look bad... real bad.  But, the first KOTOR made almost every RPG and star wars game look bad.  Hell KOTOR puts Jade Empire to shame even.  Well Jade Empire isn't that great to start off with anyway.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Best RPG ever ( made by BioWare ) ( superb nonlinear story with the greatest story twist ever, great locations, very interesting characters, only a few bugs )

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords - Good RPG ( made by Obsidian ) ( boring unfinished linear story with a terrible ending, boring locations, uninteresting characters, a million bugs, it's more like an expansion pack because almost everything was copied from KOTOR 1 and only a few things were added )

Even if LucasArts didn't rush Obsidian to cut so much content I doubt it would have been better than KOTOR 1 ( even with team gizka's restoration project it won't be better ). Maybe they rushed KOTOR 2, but they also messed up Neverwinter Nights 2 ( linear boring story with a million bugs ). Face it: Obsidian keeps making average games with linear stories and lots of bugs and keeps making sequels from BioWare because they don't have any original ideas of their own while Bioware makes great original stories. I think that Bioware is the greatest gaming company ever and I hope they make KOTOR 3 ( but I doubt it ), but I just hope they make Mass Effect for PC too ( which I think will be the greatest RPG ever ) and don't wait 2 years after it's out for XBOX360 to make it for PC ( like they did with Jade Empire which is also a superb RPG ).

No! KOTOR 2 is not as good as the original. However, if you liked the first one you will like the second, since they literally kept everything from the first and just added more.

A lot of good points made here

KOTOR2 is definitely worth playing.  Several technical improvements over the first, but a bit more buggy.  Here's my main criticisms:

 1) The story is not a good as the first.  You don't feel as engaged with the main character and the ending leaves you with nothing

 2) Interesting characters but the evolution of these characters, interactions, and effect on the storyline are limited. I really hated how the dialogue trees close out for many of the characters well before the ending, except maybe for Kreia, who is the most annoying character, but the most important.

Overall, I enjoyed playing the game. It could have been a whole lot better especially in the story department - the ending blows

The gameplay in KOTOR 2 is way, way, way better.

But the story in KOTOR is way, way, way worse.

Its the ultimate tradeoff, imo.  Youre playing the game talking to yourself about how cool the new skills are, the influence/ good-vs-evil system is, all the NPCs, dialogue, etc yet as you play the game it just isnt as epic as the first.

But thats why we play games, after all.  To have fun!  So if a story that is inferior to the first's ruins your fun, dont get it.  But the story isnt too bad (i didnt like the ending, and thats it) and the gameplay is way better.

I'm pretty much in complete agreement with mrbojangles.  The new stuff Obsidian added make KOTOR2 a better game, but its incomplete presentation will leave you unsatisfied with the ending.

To summarise: The actually gameplay elements have been greatly improved, but sections of the game are unfinished, and the story is ultimately disappointing.

Even so, as long as you're not expecting some kind of huge revelation ala KOTOR 1 (or anything comprehensible in the story, really ;)), you'll probably enjoy KOTOR 2.

Also, I've certainly found it to be much more replayable than the first game - TSL seems to have more random events and more variables for each scenario, creating more role-playing options and encouraging the player to try out every combination of character (for example: male, female, light and dark characters get some different party members).

*Edit* How could I forget? I post it in all of these threads...

Team Gizka has almost completed the mod that should restore most of the unfinished content. Assuming that it is any good (and it should be - that cut stuff is amazing!), then it should definitely justify your purchase of this game.

KOTOR 1 although a great game is as linear as an RPG can get. The subplots are superficial, exploration is non-existent and the focus is on the main story.

Best rpg by Bio ever? Have you ever heard of BG series? There you can find excellent and deep subquests and plots in perfect balance with the main quest (hear that Bethesda)?

If Obsidian are to be accused of incoherent storylines and half finished content (which is true) Bio can be accused of repeating themselves over and over with same story themes, interaction, NPC's (there's always a father-like figure at the beggining of their games because you're an orphan but with a great destiny awaiting, sounds familiar?) The only difference is that its getting worse all the time as NWN 1 was terrible and way inferior to BG and the interactive movie called Jade Empire (the first game that you don't actually play but watch) much inferior to KOTOR.

Mass Effect will NOT be released for the PC. It is officialy stated that its XBOX360 exclusive and you seem to forget that it is planned as a trilogy during the x360 lifespan. What makes people think that Bio has spare time and resources to make a PC port is their illusion that Bio cares for the PC community as much or even more than the console one (which is total bull off course). Rumours about their "PC exclusive" Dragon Age being made for PS3 too only strengthen this argument.

You dare diss the company whose core staff and founders were the makers of fallout 2? Blasphemy! Although KOTOR II was unfinished in terms of story, I don't think anyone can deny that the gameplay was definitely a mark up from the original. Same goes to NWN2, whose real problem was just bugs.(Ironically the original NWN was almost just as buggy and as linear as NWN2, which are the exact same traits you seem to bash NWN2 on)

Once obsidian actually works on their own game I bet we'll see something as innovative as bioware titles or even the fallout series. Â
