I remember trying to play KOTOR 2 a while ago and it had so many problems I pretty much just gave up on it. I'm considering revisitng it now that SWTOR is right around the corner. Have they fixed all of the bugs and is it worth going back to?

As long as you keep making new saves and don't resave over older saves the bugs are not that bad. I would do that anyways regardless of the community patch, because I remember having to restart after an 18 hour or so game, because I got stuck in a buggy conversation loop and could not progress.
I've played it in the last year on my Windows 7. After the latest downloaded patch it worked fine. I too was mainly boning up on my Star Wars lore toward potentialOld Republicplay.
I enjoyed Obsidian's companions a bit more than the ones in Kotor. Also, perhaps I was a Kotor newb so I just didn't see the combat options were in both games, but running behind enemies and shooting them in the back as Atton in Kotor 2was very fun. I don't recall break-up-the-group as a viable way to do combat in Kotor 1. I also don't remember ever needing to stealth very much in Kotor 1 compared to 2 so it seems Obsidian (as usual) brought some interesting updates to the engine (even if Obsidian brings budget-born troubles to their very worthy projects.)
I had the ol' witch lady equipped with a Gammorean axe and (*SPOILER ALERT*) the cutscene where she is sneaking around the Ebon Hawk and whispering in the Disciple's ear with a big ol' hatchet in hand were downright chilling. Two things I didn't like too much: 1.)There is always some door some where that you have to figure out how tounlock. This device in RPGs just feels like a throwback to some tabletop pen-n-paper days that don't translate as that entertaining on a PC. (Jedi Outcast, as an example, could've cut waaaaaaaay down on the blockades...sheesh.) And 2.) (*SPOILER ALERT*) By the third time the story requires your crew and ship to crash I was like, "Really, Obsidian? The guys who invented the Fallout universe couldn't find other plot devices to replace the last two shipwrecks?
I liked it overall though.
meh everytime someone talks about kotor or i read about it it annoys me that they decided to waste their time in a clone wow mmorpg instead of making kotor 3.

I am less put-off bySWTOR's potentialWoW-like mechanics than I am -- to be honest -- the monthly price. I played City of Heroes for 4 years every month and loved it so I wondered what changed about me that I'm afraid of subscription fees now? Then it occured to me. When I played City of Heroes, I didn't play or pay for any other games really.
Then in 2008 when living in Calion a day thatno onewanted to beoutside because of wildfire smoke, I picked up GTA San Andreas (late to the party I know) and Fallout3 and I've been a fairly avid gamer since. I hope SWTOR and other MMOs do well because I like to know thatthey are options but like the rest of the "99 percent" I've learned to become more meiserly.
I get so much entertainment out of the one-time costs associated with Mass Effect 2 ($19.99), Dead Space 1 ($9.99), DC Universe Online and Crysis 2 multiplayer (free every month once you buy the game) that a routine $15 out of my account every month seems pricey. Who knows? Maybe 2012 will be such a stellar year success-wise for methat I roll all seven of the SWTOR characters I have in my head. With the current uncertainty, however, I might just roll a bounty hunter and that's it or just watch the monthly price and do nothing in the mean time.
Does anyone know where I can get a digital copy or a boxed copy (from a local store, ordering from amazon seems pointless because it takes over a week for their stuff to get to me and SWTOR will be out by then)?
I got mine at a Target somewhat recently. Could be I just got lucky but it was there brand new for a moderate price. I find Target has pretty good PC game selection and have picked up a few games there. Seems like Best Buy has more newer titles and they are always trying to put some limited edition thing on ya for a few extra bucks. It's like, "If it's so limited? Then why don't youhave one copy of the non-limited? Seems like the non-limited is the real limited."
KotOR 2 starts slow, but in the end it's well worth the time. It might not feel as epic as KotOR 1 was, but I certainly appreciated the atmosphere and extention of the Old Republic storyline. Mad love for this game.

Everything I've heard from longtime RPG fans is that It's better than KotOR 1. (unless your a total Star Wars geek)KotOR 2 starts slow, but in the end it's well worth the time. Bugs and slow start aside, KotoR 2 is much better than KotoR 1.
KotoR 2 is a far more intelligent game than KotoR 1 with much deeper characters like Kreia, thought provoking moments, very interesting plot elements, a proper look at morality. The side quests are a also more interesting and it is written by Chris Avellone, not the talentless hack Drew Karpyshyn so you wont get awkward lines like anything "kiss me you fool". Combat is still bad, which is to be expected considering it is RTWP.
Download the restored content mod and experience one of the most intelligent pieces of Star Wars lore ever.
I checked Target.com and it said that the stores near me have a "limited supply", so I may call them up and see if they have a copy. I'm starting to realize now though that I probably won't have time to get into KOTOR 2 before SWTOR comes out, especially because I'm in the process of replaying KOTOR. Anyone know how much of a story connection KOTOR 2 and SWTOR will have? If it isn't significant I'll put KOTOR 2 on the list of games that I'll play when I get more time.

You're right you probably don't have time to finish both before the start of ToR, unless you plan on playing it every day from now until then for several hours each day. I want to say each is probably 35-50 hours depending on the number of side quests you do.

Yah, I'm considering putting it off for another time. Anyone here get really far into the beta and see any significant connections to the KOTOR 2 (without any spoilers obviously)?
KOTOR 2 was just unfinished.. And far easier of a game then the first in many ways.. Not to mention the story was extremely convoluted, where Revan disappears and suddenly out of no where a bunch of these Sith masters terrorize the galaxy again.. The final straw was the games ending, or lack thereof.. Literally the last hour of the game was so stupid and unfinished that it baffled me.sSubZerOoI liked KotOR 2, but I still have no idea where these Sith came from! Revan simply became a Sith Lord because he was manipulated by the Emperor of the True Sith, along with Malak. I didn't think there were any 'active' Sith before that.
