Well, SWTOR is now free to play and since 2005 we have not had the chance of a real good Star Wars single-player RPG since KOTOR 2. While the WoW clone might have been "fun" for many, we gamers who enjoyed KOTOR and KOTOR 2 are still hoping to see KOTOR 3. with SWTOR we were given the argument that this MMO was going to be KOTOR 3 + 4 +5 etc. Now, will either Obsidian or Bioware (er..EA) listen to hardcore fans and develope KOTOR 3? We would love to "be" Revan again, to be able to play the Exile, to enjoy an intricate story of dark/light side and shades in between (like in KOTOR 2 and Planescape Torment), influencing and saving/corrupting companions, factions...planets. Enough of MMO stuff and bring back the Force.

they wont bioware is done laying golden eggs which means its about that time for EA to take em behind the woodshed and exectue them like they did so many other developers before them. EA is alot like a brainwashing rapist, acivision too while we are at it. they make you feel that what theyre doing to you and your talent is normal and okay.. and then they murder you with a knife while your too exhausted to run away when theyve grown bored of you.

in biowares case it will be ebcause swotor has blasted a hole in EA's finances a MASSIVE HOLE. it was what 3.2 million to develop the game? its made less than 1 million total revenue. and thats BEFORE you factor in the paying of the development staff and the monthly server upkeep bills.

When they bought LucasArts, Disney mentioned a focus on social and mobile gaming. Which makes sense given how they abandoned high-profile gaming in 2011.

Don't expect much.

Even if they make a return on next-gen platforms I doubt they would trust BioWare and EA after TORtanic.

In my opinion, games of Lucas Arts under the umbrella of Disney, are going to be light weights. No Grim Fandango, no KOTOR succesors.

It would be great... but I have little hope we will see the light of the day on that one. Maybe new Jedi Knight game? Image that with Star Wars 1313 concept, visuals and physics. :) I have spent little over 6 years in Jedi Outcast (if anyone remembers KOH guild) and would love to recreate those online moments again.

You can play SWTOR solo most of the way through the story line, and personally I think it's very similar to KOTOR. The game mechanics are similar, expect PAUSE, and it has story arcs and interesting characters too.

This. I read somewhere that Disney would rather focus on social type star wars games like angry birds and 1313 would be the last high profile star wars game. Sucks because I would love to see a KOTOR 3 even though TOR could be seen as KOTOR 3 or a new Jedi Night Series but sadly with Disney in charge now and what happened with TOR I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Obsidian will have their hands full for a while - they're working on at least two projects at the moment, if not more. Don't expect to see a KOTOR 3 from them anytime soon. As for Bioware...they'd be more likely to make story-content patches/DLC/expansions to TOR than they would be to make a whole new (competing) sequel. Still, it's a moot point, since Lucasarts' games are in limbo at the moment.

Bioware is pretty much falling apart. They killed Dragon Age, Mass Effect 3's ending, even after all the "DLCs" and stuff ruined the whole franchise for some, TOR was popular for less than a month and they discontinued Jade Empire and KOTOR, that were 2 of their most successfull projects...The fact that most of their founding staff has left the company recently speaks by itself Luckily, we have CD Project RED (The Witcher) that seems to be sticking with the good old Bioware RPG formula, offering us spectacular mature games with rewarding gameplay and free quality dlc (not like the Bioware overpriced crap that ends in less than an hour). I can't wait for Cyberpunk and I certainly hope they get more licenses in the future (I would love a LOTR or GOT game by them)

they ahd to take out a huge loan to pay for the game on EA's tab. to make the game and your forget the grand scheme of a retail or digital sale. your paying for it to be put into a box for media print ups. the expenses to make a game arent just about the development staff, the engine licensce, the server hosting & upkeep,. theres also the audio talent, the musical score. this is a huge endeavour. EA as a result is still in the hole over this and probably will remain so for a better part of 2-3 years if they dont cut their losses outright and shut her down.

what i find funny about all this is that games nobody thought were going to succeed like APB: R is actually turning a profit for gamersfirst now and will probably keep itself alive for longer than swotor will be around as a result. EA isnt stupid their willing to burn a village if it means they dont lose more money on them.

If KOTOR 3 were to be developed by Bioware, it would be dumbed down as much as Mass Effect 3.

I never noticed the atrocious voice acting everyone talks about in TOR. Sure there are some better than others, but there was bad voice acting in KOTOR as well, but everyone seems to forget that and think KOTOR is a 10/10 masterpiece, which it isn't (I love KOTOR1+2 btw). As for plots, obviously an MMO can't have that "your choices change the world" thing since no MMO has been able to accomplish that yet, but there are some nice plots, twists and characters in TOR which are similar to plots in KOTOR. The devs were correct in a way though, TOR is like KOTOR3+4+5+6+7, since it plays like an online Co-Op KOTOR with lots more content.

Lucasarts is a subsidiary of Lucasfilm, ergo by buying Lucasfilms, Disney also has Lucasarts, skywalkersound ect....

It was no intended to mislead, it was intended as a claim of KOTOR fans to make developers and publishers realize we want that game. They always say they give the market what it wants but, most of the times, they develope games they want us to play. I am aware that KOTOR 3 is far from the developers spectrum, and if it is, then it surely is some kind of mutated thing. So much for marketing research...

Actually the development cost around 200 million, making it the most expensive game development project ever done. While we have no word on their profits or the number of players its pretty clear that the game didnt meet expectations.

You are probably right about people asking for an MMO of SW, but the end product (SWTOR) was not what KOTOR fans wanted. the only epic thing about SWTOR was its trailer. Fun, probably, but not what gamers of the original KOTOR and KOTOR 2 were asking for. It was more a WoW and LOTRO clone. Developers, or perhaps the publihser, thought it was safer to launch an MMO more like WoW to appeal the masses. KOTOR and KOTOR 2 are single-player experinces, each with its weakneses and strengths, and each one made an impact on fans due to its game-play and story-telling. SWTOR did achieve lots of suscribers, but it cannot replace the hunger for KOTOR 3 as a single-player experience.

Well, that's where my opinion is different from yours. I think the only thing that SWTOR copies from WoW is the art style (cartoon graphics) and the hotkey combat (which KOTOR had anyway). Other than that it really doesn't play like a full blown MMO like WoW, but more like a somewhat linear closed online Co-Op game, an Online KOTOR as I always say. Like I said countless times, of course an online game is not going to be the same as a SP experience, but if you played lots of SWTOR you realize it has a lot of things similar to KOTOR, it's just that people compare it to WoW, jump on the hate wagon and not see these things. If you like the SW Universe, and story telling and characters, SWTOR is just fine. People need to stop crying about KOTOR3. What BioWare "might" do is a SP game in parallel to SWTOR, like a side story which connects to the MMO. It would be a cool idea but right now they have their workflow on SWTOR with content etc.

Obsidian should tackle something along the lines of "The Adventure of Han Solo" or "Adventures of Lando Calrissian" Not with those dorky names of course, just the ideas.
