I've been a casual gamer for the past 2-3 years. I've owned and played through a good number of games, but never really stayed on one for long enough for become really good. The University I attend is hosting a campus-wide LAN party that I want to go to, but I don't want to make myself look like a fool. What are some general tips to get better at some of the games we will have tournaments in (mainly FPS), and some general tips for going to a 24hr LAN party.

What Uni? I've never been to one, but I hear you need to bring your own comp, maybe a network cable, some awful cheap fizzy drink and lucozade bars. Crisps are frowned upon for their crumby/crackly/flakey nature.

Find out what you need to bring. Computer, chair, etc?

Bring snacks and drinks to keep you awake and nurished.

Don't worry about looking like a noob. You won't stand up to people who've been playing those FPS games for months. Just have fun. If a lot of people show up you'll be no worse than the next guy after a few rounds.

Make sure to take breaks from time to time to get up and walk around.

Replace any thumb screws in your computer with real screws. If it takes 15 seconds for you to pop off your case door and get inside that means it will only take 15 seconds for some thief to nab your graphics card.

I wouldn't worry about it. Usually at lan parties, people aren't concerned about how well you can play, it's all about just being there and playing, from my experience anyway. But hey, I was never really bad at games, I mean I did come 1 capture away from my team winning first at the TF2 Tourney.

Just go and have fun. I'm sure there is bound to be someone much worse than you, but if you can, find out whats the main games to be played, and like someone mentioned before, just play that/those games a lot until the LAN.

Also, as a tip, its ok to lose, you have to be able to lose in order to win. Only through losing do we learn from our mistakes so that we can start winning.

aim for their heads and throw firecrackers in the room to distract people so you can kill them when they are not looking.

Thanks for all the advice, especially the bit about thumb screws. I expect it to be fairly secure though since it's run by the university. For those asking, I go to Texas Tech University. From what I've heard it's more of a "bring everything you have and we'll play what the most of it, but tournaments in the more popular games (CS, SC etc...)"
