Laptop boots to a black screen?

Hi all

I've got a gaming laptop, and now when I power it up, it boots to a black screen and Windows won't load. I've Googled a bit and find people with similar issues, many saying it has something to do with updating my Nvidia and/or receiving Windows updates.

Any ideas on how to correct this? I've done a full restore once, and after I accepted the Windows updates again, same result. I'd like to be able to receive the updates (mainly so I can get back to Windows 8.1) and update my Nvidia drivers of course.

Are you certain Windows is booting (eg hearing the Windows sounds as the OS boots) or you're just getting a blank screen, period?

Are you seeing the BIOS post before Windows boots and the screen goes dark?
