So I think I'm gonna buy a new laptop. Its pretty much gonna be for gaming only, but some limited work stuff. Mainly gaming for when I'm bored here or in Iraq on deployment (in the Marines)

Is the Centrino processor any good? I see it and then the add says underneath "Intel® CoreTM2 Duo mobile processor" and then a T and a number.

Is this the laptop version of the Core 2 duo E6400 in my desktop?

Also, what is the best graphics card for a laptop?

Here's a great article on laptop graphics chips. The best gaming chips are for the 17" laptops because they are the only ones with the room to handle the cooling solutions.

I thought the Centrino name was retired but I guess Intel could be bringing it back. Normally you don't get desktop CPUs in laptops because they take too much power. Intel has recently increased the confusion factor by naming both desktop/laptop chips Core 2 Duo but with different series numbers. I think laptop chips start with a T. They do make some uber gaming laptops with desktop chips but they're really heavy and expensive. Plus the battery life sucks.

the mobile core 2 duo aren't much slower than the desktop version, just have 800mhz fsb vs 1333 on the highend core 2. many are better than the e2xxx/ e4xxx T8xxx @2ghz+ have 4mhz cache and the T9xxx above 2.3 I think have 6mb cache. basicly they are the same as desktop versions with slower bus than the fastest core 2 desktop. any core 2 mobile with 800mhz fsb is pleanty for gaming.

For the graphics card, if you want some portability and bat life the 8600m gt is pretty good can run most games on high, if you don't care for size and bat life go fo the 8800m gs or even twon of them, they aren't far behind the desktop 8800

Its probably gotta stay under 2 grand.

I've looked for this 8800 GTX, and I can't find anyone who makes a laptop with it in it.

And, basically, from what I've gathered, they kept the centrino name. But if it has Txxx in the description, it is the mobile version of the Core 2 Duo processor. Is this correct?

If you have no care for weight (which is usually the main factor in getting a laptop over a PC), then the Gateway P series is the way to go. $1300 for a 8800M GTS, 2ghz C2d, and 3gigs 667mhz ram. Although it has a crappy display (1440x900 is no way to play on a 8800 card), it's still a good deal. It weighs almost 10lbs though... so... you don't want to be carrying this thing around too much.

lol, weight isn't a problem. I'm a Marine. I regularly hike with 80+ pounds.

Gateway huh? Just when I had sold myself on an Insperon 1720 with a 8600M GT for under 1500

that's because there is no 8800gtx in laptops. but there is a 8800gs which is much better than the 8600gt/8700gt

it's an 8800M GTX. the 8800 GTX is the desktop version. alienware and sager are the only one i know that offers the 8800M GTX and 8800M GTX SLI.

Centrino is just a marketing scheme intel uses for laptops that has an intel processor, intel chipset, and intel wireless card.

yes, the Txxxx is the mobile core 2 duos

Yes there is. Go config an m15x or m17x and it's there. $500 extra, but it's there. All 96 stream processors of it!
