Scenario: You have $2200 Cdn. to spend on a new laptop (taxes not included).

What do you get? I've finally gotten to college and my Dad will finally allow me to spend my hard earned cash on a laptop, as he sees it as a school purchase.

I've been eyeing the MacBook Pro for a while now, it seems to have good juice for the buck. Being that it's a laptop, I tell myself that I probably won't be using it for gaming, but then i'd just be kidding myself.

I've been on this same old 1.4 ghz, 512, radeon 9600xt (which i forked out $300 for at the time) and it has been obsolete for some time now.

So now I have the opportunity to go all out on a laptop and thats where you fine people come in.

What would you do in my situation, you have a crappy old PC and roughly (give or take) $2200 to spend on a new laptop.

What would you get? I've been looking at Windows based notebooks for a while now and I have yet to find anything that measures up to the MacBook Pro in my mind. I don't really know a whole lot about Mac's - but i'm sure I could pick it up fairly quickly. Plus I now know that they can run Windows with BootCamp.

So please give me some assistance.

Should I spend my cash on a Vista Ultimate enabled gaming laptop or the MacBook Pro? Will theMacBook Pro running XP or Vista run games as well as the pc? I'm diggin the Core 2 Duo thing here, none of the windows laptops I see for around the same price-ish appear to have the same power as the mac.

http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/canadastore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=2BF7FB2D&nclm=MacBookPro

I think i'm leaning towards the first 15" one there. I know the next one is a fairly big step up in terms of gaming but I don't see myself spending $3000 with tax.

Anyway I think you get what I mean. If you know of any deals or good system out right now, please feel free to give me your opinion. From what i've seen, the MacBook Pro seems to have the best bang for the buck.

Also a few side questions for Mac Users.

1) How often does apple release new laptops? Is the MacBook Pro listed there fairly new or will it be replaced soon?

2) When does the new Mac OS (i think its OS X 10.5) come out?

3) When does iLife 07' come out?

4) When they do get released, do you think they will become the standard for these laptops, or will the prices go up?

Sorry to rant, i've been suspended for 17 days and needed to get this out.

Thanks,

BTW, would a $2200 laptop be considered a high end? Or am I in a mid range level?

from what i heard, you generally tend to spend about 50% more on a mac than the equivalent hardware pc. because mac has all of its bells and whistles, and iLife. and because its customized and runs stable right.

doesnt appear to be the case here, im not seeing any laptops anywhere with a processor that good in it.

so i should be able to get a significantly more powerful windows based laptop for that price right? but i've yet to find one.

thats where you people come in.

I don't think the x1600 would run it great, but maybe low... we don't knmow since the game isn't out. This alienware is better for games and should run most games well. It has a x1800 in it. http://www.alienware.com/configurator_pages/area-51_m5790.aspx?syscode=PC-LT-AREA51M5790&subcode=SKU-DEFAULT

You might want to look at the Dell XPS line if you're looking for a higher end gaming PC.  I bought myself an Inspiron 9400 for just under $2000 Cdn.  17" screen and a 7900Go video card, with a 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo.  Plenty of power, although I will admit it's a bit on the heavy side.

DX10 laptop GPUs should be coming in around May or June.  Give it a couple/few months before making a purchase.
