I'm getting a laptop soon and it's supposed to be for school but i want to game a little on it so here are the specs that is has (it's $1000 but i have a coupon to make it $723)

 – Onyx– Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 (32-bit)

– Pentium(R) Dual-Core Mobile Processor T3200 (2.0 GHz)

– 15.4" diagonal WXGA High-Definition HP BrightView Widescreen Display (1280 x 800)

– FREE Upgrade to 3GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 2GB DDR2 System Memory (2 Dimm)

– 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT

– 160GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection

– Webcam Only

– HP Color Matching Keyboard

– Wireless-G Card

– No Modem– SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support

– No TV Tuner w/remote control

– High Capacity 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery– Microsoft(R) Works 9.0– HP Home & Home Office Store in-box envelope

I can't go much higher, but i might be able to squeeze in a better CPU, but for a cheap laptop how decent is it? I heard that the 9600 GT is a little slower than the 8800 but i'm not an extreme gamer, just a casual, but when i play i like to play at high resolution and smooth frames, i've been dealing with my old pc for years, it can't even play AOEIII on low without freezing so this would be a big improvment. Also don't tell me to get a new desktop because i'm going to soon also...

first of all is this laptop going to and from school? if it isn't, and it's just going to sit at home and be used there (for school,) the i would get a workhorse laptop. look into something that has a stronger CPU, so that it can handle large programs. actually screw what i just said. this laptop that you have your sights set on is REALLY nice. the graphics card is above par, and you will be able to play Crysis on Medium.

P.S. when/if you want to get a desktop too, post another comment on this thread or start a new one and i can try to help you a lot with finding a good deal.

For $700 dollars it isn't bad at all. If this is a school laptop and not in any way going to play games like fallout 3, crysis, etc. you are set (mind you it can play those.) I worry about the 160GB hardrive. Maybe as you have it for a few months you may want to upgrade the CPU. But that is an acceptable school computer except for the 160GB (I would get 200+). Well what can I say, its $700.

From HP, i'm using a 30% off coupon but if you don't it's about $900, also i upgraded the cpu to an Intel Dual Core 2 proccesor (2.0 ghz.) and the hardrive to 320gb, it was a free upgrade from 240gb. And i'm ordering tonight probably...

you may have already ordered the laptop, but i will say something anyway. School laptops really don't need a lot of hardrive space because most of the saved items are from Word Proccesor and other writing applications which take up a very insignificant amount of space. this is true unlee you are doing 3D application work (like if your in College and doing architecture, or movie making).

P.S. also props for not getting a Mac. My sister and friends all have fallen to the white shiny tablets, so this makes me feel better

Just had to back u up about Mac.. Ur right, no reason to pay double the price for software. Thats what folks are doing when they buy a MAC. Its all IBM parts inside, and u pay outlandish prices for them. Only thing u get thats different is the OS.

And for some reason, non-understanding people don't seem to get this>they complain about paying for MS-OS but they will shell out twice as much for OSX. Might as well download free Linux. AAHHH!! I could babble on. Anyways, u get the idea.

MAC is basically a fad - like the Ipod.

I'm sorry I have NFI what that car comment means. All I know is you called the Mac a fad. The definition of a fad is "A fashion that is taken up with great enthusiasm for a brief period of time; a craze.". I'm not sure how you can call nearly 1/4 of century a "fad". Each to their own I guess.
