Hey,

I'm looking to replace my 17" CRT Computer Monitor in favour of some sort of LCD one. My question is, should I purchase an LCD Monitor, or should I get a TV? The thing is I already have a 37" Bravia, but it'd be nice to play PS3 or Xbox 360 while that TV is being used (for example if I want to play 360 but someone's on the PS3). Also I could run cable TV into my monitor/TV too....

These are the two I had in mind... the monitor would be from Acer and the TV from a Dynex. Looking to spend no more than $250 for one, may pay more if it's a killer display.

Acer Monitor, 21.6" 1920x1080:

Dynex, 18" 1366x768:

However, if you guys know of or think there's a better LCD Monitor/TV, please feel free to suggest! Thanks!

I would personally go with a 24' TV for this situation, as you could use the 37' for gaming, and the 24' for watching the game/computing. My parents have a 23' dell monitor, and if you're up close, it's just about the right size for anything. Spend a little extra $or so for a nice 24'TV if you can/have enough space, because it's something you'll be able to use for multi purposes for years to come. Be sure to check Target or amazon.com for their offerings as well:)

I recently got a 23 inch 1080p LCD monitor, much better IQ than any TV of the same size.

The only problem with straight monitors is that you will probably need to hook up some sort of external sound outputs.

EDIT: One advantage which may be big to you, is that monitors can handle the full RBG spectrum (0-255) while TVs can only handle a limited spectrum (16-235 I think). Because of this it should be possible to have slightly stronger colors as well as blacker blacks and whiter whites.

having an LCD TV 1080p as a monitor (pc gaming or console gaming) and as a tv at the same time. is great.

if u have a TV already, then just go grab a monitor for your console or pc. 1080p for the win. samsung/LG/asus

@motherbloop Eh 24" TV is near double of what I want to spend lol. I'm not looking for anything spectacular, just something nice to get the job done. @swazidoughman Yeah the individual sound thing is going to be a pain, but I'm using 5.1 sound for my computer right now. I guess if I switch up to consoles I can just spend 5 mins unplugging and replugging. @Carminesqueez So you're suggesting I got with a monitor? Which one? Thanks for the responses guys! Any recommendations on the screen I should pick up? Something about having a TV as a monitor I can't get out of my head (comes with sound, cable access, etc), however, I'm worried the quality at 20" and the company brand (Dynex) won't be sufficient...

That Dell would be a good choice, you can't go wrong with Samsung, NEC, LG, and Sony.

For $250 you can get a 24" 1080P with 1:1 scaling and HDCP, but the LCD will most likely use a TN-Panel. You might see some lighter blacks and crushed colors, but they should work just fine.

Oh.. you mentioned a $250 max budget, and said you would consider paying more for a killer display. I was thinking it would be more than reasonable to get a tv/monitor in one, and spend the $250-$300 on a 24'tv. did you check out targets website, or are they out of the question?

The monitor I use is TN-Panel based.

Color quality seems fine, and there's only crushing in the most upper regions of color, but afaik no games or movies use pure vibrant colors anyway.

Blacks are fine, however it seems as if 1 is black to me opposed to 0, but slight crushing like that shouldn't cause problems during any regular activity.

I don't doubt that your TN Display does a great job, but just giving the TC a heads up on what he might expect with using a TN Panel LCD.
