General question about if i should leave my computer on all the time or not.

I currently have it go into a power save mode after 3 hrs of non-use.

Is it better for computer components to have a break and be shut off or always on. Logic says, it should be shut down every once in a while. But is all of that stopping and starting bad for the PC? I know computers at my work are almost never shutdown or even restarted.

Comments?

I leave my pc on all the time. It powers down after a time. When I push the power button, it resumes right where I left off. No need to power down completely.

i set my button to hibernate when pressed. shuts down quicker and loads up quicker and far more reliable than having to start and shut down all the time especially when your start up sequence is bloated.

I generally see no point, unless you are actually doing something like torrenting or folding. Otherwise you are just wasting electricity.

Agreed. The two minutes it takes for a cold boot can be spent getting a drink or reading the post or whatever. If you're going to be using your computer frequently throughout the day then sure, sleep mode is worth utilising; but if you're only using your computer when you're getting in from work/school/college then leaving it on standby in the intervening time is fairly pointless.

I turn mine off when I'm at work, turn it on when I'm at home. I've heard of "chip creep", which is components coming unseated because of heating/cooling cycles, but that was from back in the day. I don't think today's hardware gives a damn. It's good to shut down and restart Windows once in awhile though for sure.
