Ok, this has to be the most surprising and astounding test I have ever done. I actually couldn't believe it when I performed this test. Left 4 Dead is known for it's very demanding nature, ecspecially when it comes to the cpu department. When i did this test I had extremely low expectations, I didn't even think I would get over 15 fps. Boy was I wrong...

TEST SYSTEM SPECS:

Intel Celeron 2.2 ghz

nVidia 6200 OC 256 mb

2 gigs of factory ram

LEFT 4 DEAD:

Ok, this was very surprising, the game ran at a perfect 60 fps nearly through the whole game with all graphics setting other than resolution at low. With more than 25 characters on screen the fpps dropped between 5-20 fps.

SETTINGS USED:

Screen Resolution - 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768. (above 10x7 were not tested.) The game ran perfectly at these three resolutions with all graphics on low.

Texture quality - low

Shader Quality - low

Texture Filter - Bilinear

Page memory file usage - low

SIDE NOTE:

The game ran at great speeds, yet for some strange reason, lighting and shaders were permantly disabled and could not be turned on. It was very strange, no matter what I tried, lighting did not work! it kind of reminded me of the PC port of Resident Evil 4.

Awesome!

That proves that valve knows how to optimize their engine to suit even the crappiest of builds.

Why can't you just update one of the two threads you already made?

Sporknife

They would become too big and cumbersome to read, by doing one game at a time, it helps the reader focus on that one game without being distracted by the Crysis or Gears of War segment of the topic. Besides, Left 4 Dead deserves it's own thread, to me, it's just that good. Had to get the word out. Her's an example of what I mean...

I don't want to sound mean but I don't really think anyone cares on these boards since most of us have mid-high end builds.

Source Engine is IMO one of the best engines out now, it is so well optimized it can run on virtually any computer made within the last few years and it still looks great to boot. Hell, my old beater of a computer I have lying around can run HL2 at 1024*768 on med/some high settings and its a P4 with a GeForce FX5200 videocard.

Actually, I've been getting good responses. I not only do this to help gamers with old PC's out, but some people are actually amazed at what old computers can do, if you missed my older topic about this same computer running Crysis, you should check it out.

I agree. I too have a high-end rig and still find your tests to be of value :)

it's funny that that pc is probably still better than what a lot of people out there have. some random small kid came in and bought left 4 dead for pc and i couldn't imagine he had a pc to run it but this gives me hope he did get to play at least.

Not directly, but it's little kids that will want it anyway to be "cool".

YEP. It's a great game... When I'm not at home. I play L4D on a relatively Low-End laptop. Get a decent performance out of it but the visual is totally.... compared to HIGH setting. But this will do.
