I was about to make this myself.
I've never wanted to play something more than I do this Game. This has been my most wanted game, not just this year, but since it was announced in 2006. Valve has yet to do me wrong. And now that they acquired Turtle Rock and Left 4 Dead, I will finally play a worthwhile Zombie Game not made by capcom. I'm betting it will win PC GotY and Multiplayer GotY.
Ive had my doubts about this game but tbh, I'm getting it fo sheer awesome of zombie invasion at lan party!
Im not getting it. The characters dont seem to have that defining element in them that makes them memorable.Vilot_Hero
It's a party coop game. It's not a lengthy singleplayer story-based RPG.
it doesnt look exciting to me. it looks like the game would get repetetive with just the same zombies over and over and over. (at least thats how it looks in the vids) You do have the "tank" zombie, but it looks very artistically uninspired.
So i dont know. It looks like a fun multiplayer game that would get old after a while. im not willing to spend $50 on it, though.
Valve isn't developing this game, Turtle Rock Studios is. Valve is merely a publisher. The game looks great though. My editor played a demo preview of it some months ago and he said it was the ****MythPro1
Turtle Rock is Valve. Valve owns the company and whatever TR releases under the Valve banner reflects upon Valve, so Valve will naturally devote all their resources to ensuring that L4D lives up to their high standards.
It's not like the Raven/id partnership or something, TR is Valve now.
So can someone enlighten me whats so special about it? So far it looks like CS but with more shooting and keeping your buddies alive. I'm not trying to flame the game but I can't see whats special about it.

Huge swarms of enemies: this is something of a niche subgenre, but games like Doom, Serious Sam, Painkiller and the like all had big swarms of enmies, and there are people who just love gunning down swarms. I've been playing Doom ever since its release for that very reason.
Zombies: what's not to love? Exactly! Nothing. Everyone loves zombies.
Coop: there's an alarming shortage of truly great coop FPS games on the PC, and to find a game that is not only built around coop, but that is built for fourplayer coop is awesome. As it happens, I have three friends, so I am in luck.
Dynamic: the game randomly spawns enemies based on how well players are doing, meaning every game will be unique, making the maps 'reusable' in the same sense that they are in competitive multiplayer FPS games.
Source: while the engine is showing its age, Source games still look amazing - and the art direction of TF2 notwithstanding, L4D is easily the best looking Source game ever. The engine also guarantees that the game will run well for almost everyone who has a PC built for gaming.
Steam: while Steam may not be loved by all its users, most adore it. The game won't require a disc, finding servers will be easy, the game will auto-update...
Valve: it's a Valve game, and Valve games are well known for their vibrant modding and mapmaking community, as well as Valve's own post-release support. If L4D gets the TF2 treatment (and it's fair to assume it may), the game will grow into something much greater than what first comes out of the box. Valve games are also generally well known for being awesome.
I'll be buying it and also running a fan mapping site for it however..
I'm honestly not impressed by the game at all, Valve looks like they are using a dated engine and we know they are using the worst/dated editor out there *Hammer*, i really wish they would upgrade their stuff!!
How long is each match?modai119
I can't find any numbers, but I believe they're aiming for around 20-30 minutes.
Is singleplayer an option?modai119
There are always four survivors (hence the name), but AI will always fill in any absent players, and other players joining can take over at any time. The distinction between singleplayer and multiplayer is like the distinction between sp and mp in Counter-Strike. It's the same game, but bots fill the gaps.
Any servers for multiplayer or its thru LAN?modai119
I haven't read any conclusive info on exactly how servers work, but considering how there are only four players, I would guess it would work in the same kind of way that an RTS game works. Just a guess, though. Naturally there will be internet multiplayer.
I heard we get to play as a 4 Super zombies but they're not in the same area is that true?modai119
The last I read, there were originally plays for players to be able to play as super zombies who are assisted by the AI zombie swarm, but this was removed in the PC version - or so I read. The focus is entirely on the four survivors against the zombie swarm.
I can't believe people don't see the potential of this game.
Yes you can play as the boss infected.

WHAT IS IT?
Left 4 Dead is a first-person shooter being made by Valve (Developers of Half-Life). It pits four humans (referred to as survivors) against hordes of zombies (referred to as infected). The Infected are similar to the zombies seen in the film 28 Days Later.
Your allies may either be controlled by AI or other players. In addition to the common horde, there are 5 special bosses in Left 4 Dead: The fat Boomer whose vomit attracts infected to attack the unlucky victim; The Smoker who will strangle and suffocate his prey with his long tongue; The Hunter, who pounces and mauls on anyone unlucky enough to get in the way; The juggernaut like Tank; and the Witch, who appears to be defenseless, when in actuality should be avoided since she can kill players very quick.
The game is split up into four "movies" which are basically scenarios. Each "movie" contains 5 maps that players progress through until the finale. The total map count in Left 4 Dead is 20 (not including remixes for the versus mode).
The game is currently known to have two modes. One is a traditional co-op mode, where four players take over the role of the survivors and try to get from point A to point B alive. The other mode is pretty much the same deal; however four more players may take over the roles of the boss infected (Excluding the Witch) and prevent the Humans from reaching safety. Versus mode is for veterans, since the AI allows the Human Boss infected to spawn quicker than the AI Bosses in the traditional co-op mode.
WHY SHOULD I CARE?
THE AI DIRECTOR
The driving force in Left 4 Dead is referred to as the AI Director. The Director's influence is felt everywhere. Primarily it controls where and how many zombies spawn. It will react to how players are progressing through a map. If a team is doing well and cooperating; they can expect a much more dramatic experience meaning more infected attacking, and payoffs. If the team is doing bad (Shooting each other, or constantly getting hurt), then the game will be more forgiving. This does not mean Left 4 Dead is an easy game, if players expect to beat a map, they must work as a team. The director also has an influence over ammo placements outside of saferooms and is able to set the tone of the game by amplifying and changing the background music and post process effects. The main goal of the director is to adjust the pace of the game to create hills and valleys; resulting in moments of quiet suspense followed by adrenaline pounding action.
COOP EXPERIENCE
The game features Drop -In/Drop-Out support, meaning that if you start up a game by yourself, players can hop in and take control of an ai controlled survivor immediately. Likewise they can leave the game, and the ai will resume control.
Team work is vital to success in Left4Dead. Aside from the fact that more survivors means more guns shooting infected, there are situations in the game where the players must cooperate to save someone in jeopardy. Once a player reaches zero health in left4Dead, they fall to the floor. While on the floor, Players are unable to move, but they can still fire their weapons in a prone like position. These downed players only have a certain amount of time before they bleed out and die, but if another survivor comes and picks them up; they can continue to play. A player may only fall down three times, after that they die (Unless they use a health pack after being helped back up).
While the characters themselves possess no abilities that set them apart, the weapon load out that each team chooses will serve to give them specialty roles. The hunting rifle is useful to take down infected at a distance and is more suited for rural, open maps. Likewise, the hunting rifle is not the best choice in enclosed spaces, such as the hospital scenario. Every survivor is able to carry just one medkit at any given time, which may be used on themselves or their friends.
To encourage good sportsmanship, the game's ai monitors everyone's actions, and at each saferoom/check point, the game displays various stats. Such examples are who shot the most infected, killed the most infected, and healed the most teammates. On the other hand, the game will also display who did the most friendly fire damage (Friendly Fire is ALWAYS on). These stats are permanent like TF2, and players will easily be able to view these stats and see who is worth teaming up with or not. While in game, there is a voting system that is able to kick players out, and even block them from using explosive weapons like the pipe bomb if they are incapable of using it properly.
Boss infected all have special moves that either will kill a player or disable them unless their teammates help them out. The Hunter pounces on people, pinning them to the ground. The Smoker will strangle a victim with his tongue and can pull them away from the group. A survivor is covered in bile and their vision is blurred when a boomer either vomits on them or explodes in their vicinity, attracting infected to that survivor: leaving his teammates to protect him. And the Tank is able to easily kill survivors, able to toss chunks of debris, but if a team keeps their cool and focus, no one will die. The Witch, the only unplayable infected boss, can be heard crying from a distance. The Witch is usually laying down, and players must be careful not to aggravate her, or else she will get up and attack the nearest player. Depending on difficulty, this could mean a one hit kill. Getting too close, shining light on her, or firing near her is known to provoke her.

Ok Sorry. Yes 28 Days Later does not have zombies in the traditional Romero sense, and neither does Left 4 Dead. The people in Left 4 Dead are driven mad by a strain of rabies virus, with symptoms similar to those in 28 Days Later.
I do sometimes lapse and call the RAGE infected people zombies. Aside from them running, there is one glaringly obvious difference between them and zombies. You don't need a headshot to kill the infected. Also to get real technical, the RAGE victims will
Die From Starvation.
However, I'm a big zombie fan, and I accept different interpretations on zombie lore, since it's based on fiction anyway. Hence the slipup.

I am becoming less and less interested in this title. They keep changing the game play to more things I do not like.
Its kinda like re-watching 28 days later versus the ORIGINAL Dawn of the Dead. They both have good parts, but overall the ORIGINAL DOTD was a better story, with better characters, even though it must appear dated to the younger people out there.
I am more excited about Fallout 3, Dead Island, and Far Cry 2
