I'm just worried about the friendly AI. Of course I'll be playing with friends, but what if only one or two are online? The parts in HL2 where you had companions "aiding" you were extremely frustrating for me, just created a noob blockade every time I turned. Tried to command them to go out in the open and die as much as possible, but I'm assuming in Left 4 dead all 4 will be needed to reach the end of the levels to move on. Anyone aware if you are just able to play with 2 players only and no AI?BeavermanAWell it's a very interesting question. I really wouldn't worry due to Steam community is very active so finding extra guys to come in and overall have a great time won't be troublesome. However I'm uncertain how the console version will handle this because of the constant migration shift between newer online games.

Oh yea I forgot to mention in my post that I also don't want to play with random people. Probably will have to resort to that if the AI is as bad as I fear, and you can't play without them. But seriously if you play other MP games, you know 90% of the players are horrible. I'll be playing with former teammates from cal-invite teams over Ventrilo, so don't want noobs shooting me in the back of the head, needing revives every 30sec, blocking doors etc. Guess if we come across some good players we can invite them onto Vent.

Why are you so obsessed with the characters like its an RPG? seriously get over it, this game is about the FPS coop nobody cares about the characters.
I disagree. TF2 is a classic example of how funny and interesting characters can make a game that much better.

*facepalm* Flat, unattractive, stupid characters make me want to smash baby kittens. I demand that you delete this post. :P

Awesome. If that's enabled by default on all servers, I won't worry that much about the implementation of the gameplay.
Guess my other main concern is like OkuLaris says, how long is this going to be entertaining? And also how challenging is it going to be?

I've seen some ridiculous responses regarding what belongs and doesn't belong in a game, but I think this one takes the cake.

While you're at it, you should start complaining about the characters in Counter-Strike.

Counter-Strike is perfectly tailored to braindead teenage geeks, therefore character representation or development is not all that necessary.

this game is gonna be really fun, & shadows seem to have improved alot in this Valve game. Can't wait :D
btw was there any game made on the movie 28 weeks later ? both of those zombie movies are so good, they must make a game on that too.
Sigh.
Over 8,000 Lines of dialgoue.
Half Life 2 only has 2,500. I don't see how you can argue about a lack of depth of the characters. Have you even been watching videos, and I mean more than one. Same as TF2, characters can be hear saying unusual neat things when situation calls for it. Plus if you read the article, they're going to flesh out a backstory in the same manner as Portal, with graffiti covered walls.

'Left 4 Dead is very much a zombie apocalypse game - you'll find no deeper meaning here, no Romero-esque political message.
The game opens on the game's four characters at ground zero two weeks after the rise of the zombies. Left 4 Dead will have a short introduction, created by the team behind the Team Fortress 2 cut-scenes, but that will be the only cut scene gamers will see in Left 4 Dead.
Instead the story will be told through the game's more than 8,000 lines of dialog and the occasional messages scrawled on the walls of the game's maps, said Valve's Chet Faliszek.
And the games plentiful dialog (Half-Life 2 only had 2,500 lines) isn't meant to be experienced the first time through, or even the fiftieth. The dialog is selected by the specific situation, so it could be weeks or months before a gamer stumbles upon a particular line which might shed a bit more light on the character's back stories.
The team decided to not include cut-scenes because Left 4 Dead is a game meant to be played over and over again and they believed the cut-scenes would quickly become tiresome.
"We didn't want to have the game game gummed up with a story line," Faliszek said. "We wanted to keep it really clean and tight. A zombie apocalypse."
"It's about killing zombies, not some fable on the reconstruction of humanity."
The fact that a map will be replayed so many times also gives the developers a bit more license for how they get the story across. They can allow gamers to pull their own experience out of the game, instead of pushing a story at them.
"You're going to play a map 50 to 100 times so we can be more subtle," he said.
After launch, once players have had plenty of time with the four scenarios of five maps each, the developers will likely release new scenarios, Faliszek said. Valve just wants to make sure anything they release and sell for the game will have real value.
"We don't want to give you horse armor," he said.'
Looks awesome. I'm not concerned about any of the things people here have mentioned. I'm sure they knew the AI had to be solid, so not too worried about that; nothing ever really gets boring in coop, so I doubt the repetition of fighting zombies will hurt that; and characters don't have to be deep in some way in every game, and I'm not sure this is a game where deep, interesting characters would even make complete sense, really (you're supposed to be four civilians who survived whatever is going on, just normal people trying to survive, and I think coloring them too much would be awkward in the setting of the game).
However, I reeaally don't think having friendly fire is a good idea in this game. I mean, with that many zombies flooding corridors, if your buddy gets surrounded, you have to shoot them off of him, and there's no way you're not going to hit him too in the process. It's also very dark, which makes it more difficult to see your own guys right away amongst all the zombies. And of course, can't forget the jackasses who want to be cute and do nothing but teamkill their teammates. I'd like to know how they're going to deal with that.
Remember, TF2 originally had friendly fire when they were testing it, and they removed it because it inhibited the game greatly. I think L4D is the same deal, with lots of small areas, very fast enemies, and tons of cluster****ing that I can only imagine will make hitting your own guys unavoidable. Hopefully there will at least be an option to turn FF off, but the way the dev spoke of it makes it sound like it's a mandatory feature.
Without FF, the game would become the mindless spam fest haters try to paint it as. If there's no penalty for spray and pay gameplay, thats all it'll amount to,Jodan77
Except this is a game where it's impossible to not hit your teammates (unless you'd prefer to just let the zombie hordes kill them). I fully understand the need for friendly fire in many games, but in games that are extremely fast-paced, not to mention ones where your teammates will get surrounded and mobbed regularly and where there are very, very tight quarters, friendly fire is only a detriment, and serves to help nothing.
Furthermore, spray and pray is only potentially stupid in games facing other human opponents, and only in ones that aren't specifically designed to be fast-paced and crazy with smaller environments. It's bad because it's an easy tactic that shouldn't be just as viable against other players as the more advanced and difficult tactics in more tactical games. But this is SP/coop. Spray and pray isn't a detriment here because it's not an unfairly easy tactic used against other players, and this is a game specifically designed in such a way that spray and pray is really the only thing you can do (How else are you going to take down hordes of zombies?). But the game punishes you for doing it, anyway. Doesn't make much sense to me.
This game is going to be a blast, I love how the character limp when they're injured, looks very real. I'm not too worried about the friendly fire because you'll probably be able to turn it off, and the penalty for hitting your team is probably not so much by the looks of it. In the second video they were hitting each other like crazy, yet no one got killed. I think I like it like that, it deters you just a little not to mindlessly shoot down a corridor with your team mate in the middle of them, yet doesn't swing far back enough that you'll cease firing competely.
I hope they scrap the "inifinite handgun" idea further down the line, or atleast make them optional for servers, I really want the fear of running out of ammo, and I also want the relief of finding an ammo cache. They should replace it with a bat that does area of effect damage. Make it so that it'll knock down like 2 zombies in front of yas, doing minor damage but leaving you with a better chance to run for dear life!
after tf2 (and how absolutely magnificent it is), i wouldn't be surprised by anything that valve does. l4d is definitely my most eagerly awaited game that's to be released this year.
btw, those two clips that you provided links to are just amazing. i'm literally stunned. *stares at video open-mouthed in stupor and absolute awe* see - stunned!

Friendly fire will be optional (as always) so there's nothing to worry about.GodLovesDead
I would not bet on it. And in the off-chance it is able to, I won't personally play it since a layer of skill is removed.
Might not be terrible to start off on to get a better understanding of how it plays.
Yeah, L4D looks absolutely amazing!
Anyway, on the FF topic, personally I think it suits L4D perfectly. What's more tense than a bunch of zombies swarming you and your friends? Knowing that you can't spray mindlessly and will have to be careful not to hit your friends while shooting the zombie, that's what! The game is all about survival, and I think FF just complements that fact. Have an a-hole that's shooting teammates for fun? Ban him.
