I'm looking at a 52" 1080p TV and so far I've narrowed it down to a few choices. The Sharp Aquos (64U version), Samsung (550), and this new LG TV, which has 120hz. The Sharp's 120hz TV costs a lot, and the Samsung 120hz has this weird effect I don't like on it.

My dad's willing to spend the extra bucks to get a quality TV, but I'm wondering if the 120hz is worth it over the Sharp and Samsung.

Here's the sharp:

Here's the Samsung:

Any help would be great. Thanks!

they're marketed terribly that's what.

seriously though, leading up to the release of their new plasmas information was slim.....kind of still is in some ways, I dont really like the low amount of hype their plasma sets seem to be generating.

well in a way, with the way these tv's are made, it's highly probably you may regret any purchase you make.

My point being is, as you noted, you probably could find something distastefully wrong with about every set you look at (this pretty much goes the same for Plasmas.....except maybe the Pioneers....which are as close to perfect that i think one could get it).

Hey Dirk,

I've read some of your other posts on this board, and you seem like a very pro-plasma guy. The reason why I'm not going for plasma is because I have big windows in the TV room and I heard plasmas were bad under weird lighting conditions. All the plasmas at stores are also strategically placed in darker areas. What would you say about this?

Well first of all, I am not really pro plasma, I just think it's better for most situations (there is a difference).

I wasnt even trying to steer you towards it in my last post (If you noticed i was actually saying they are just as prone to have some defeatable issue as the range of LCD's you picked, all HDTV's seem to be made with some glaring ommisive problem wothy of picking over).

I will say this though, if "lighting conditions" is your only concern, you maye indeed want to take another look at them.

A couple things, firstly, the stores i go to dont have Plasmas strategically placed much at all. Secondly, while they are more reflective, before the recent emrgence of flat panel tv's in the mainstream, people really never even considered a matte screen, as all the crt's were like the Plasmas, so if you've been alive long enough to use a tube television without issue then a Plasma probably wont cause you any more problems (alot of people forget pretty quickly that reflections werent much of a complaint when Matte was a non-existant option).

Furthermore, "most" of samsungs LCD tv's (including the higher end) have an ultra reflective surface, worse than most plasmas. I think it's a bad idea for them to do this, but as you can see, they are very popualar nontheless.

I guess it's your call, but i think if you feel the area you'd put it in already has a tube tv and you dont find issue with it, a Plasma shouldnt cause you any more problems.

To be honest, I likely would have settled on LCD if it wasnt for the added eyestrain their lighting method affords (particularily annoying for a gamer, oddly enough).

Dont confuse Anti-Reflective with Anti-Glare. All plasmas have AR coatings, that doesnt necesarily mean they arent quite reflective over a matte screen. This year, Panasonic has no Anti-Glare screens, as the one they made last year wasn't heavily popular (and oddly, Samsungs non-matte LCD's seem to be selling rather well, oddly).

I'm sure you do, but the fact is that an AR coating isnt close at all to Anti-glare/Matte Screens, and there is a large difference. It's irresponsible for anyone that owns (or just claims they own) a Plasma to lead someone else to beleive otherwise.
