I think I have an OK computer, but am still not able to run games like crysis on high settings (super lag)... what component of my computer is limiting the performance?

my specs:

Intel Core 2 duo 3.00ghz

2046mb RAM

ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT

Vista....

What can I improve that will make the most difference?

The graphics card is the weakest part of that PC.

Not really, that CPU would be fine with a good GPU, although the ram is a bit low.

Only if it is Wolfdale. Conroe struggles in pretty much everything by today's standards.

Ah. I thought he meant the E8400. Does he? Or is it an old 6 series?

Well if he meant E8400 you are absolutely right, but with that card it is much more likely he has an old 65nm system.

PS: Sorry for the late reply.

That's due to the clock speed. A 3GHz Conroe will run everything just fine...

I did not say you can't play Crysis if you got a decent card and a Conroe CPU, but it is outdated big time and will bottleneck in most of newer games. Without taking games into consideration, Conroe looks even worse in advanced tasks like rendering and video encoding. Anyway, that CPU will not lower your performance by a large margin. What it will do is that it will greatly degrade your gaming experience by introducing stutter in physics intensive areas.

Actually, I meant totally otherwise. You can run Conroe on great speeds and it will still struggle due to it's outdated architecture.

It all depends on your budget and how much wattage your power supply has. Also it depends on the size of your case as well ;)

not the 3000 series. However the 4890 would be an excellent choice. I'd recommend a 550 watt power supply for that ;)

yes the HD 4000 series will but you should really be looking more into the 4800 series or 5800 series depending on money you have to spend and current powersupply wattage will depend which model to get
